Do you get paid for your waiting week on Washington ESD unemployment?
I just finished my first week of unemployment and I'm confused about the waiting week. I filed my weekly claim but it shows $0 payment. Is this normal? Do I eventually get paid for this week or is it just lost income? I've heard different things from people and want to make sure I understand how this works with Washington ESD.

Yes, there's a one-week waiting period for new UI claims in Washington. You won't get paid for that first week initially, but you should receive it later once your claim is established and processed.

•Thanks! Do you know when exactly I'll get that first week paid? Is it at the end of my claim period?

•Usually it gets paid out either when your claim ends or if you exhaust your benefits. It's like they hold onto it until the very end.

I was so confused about this too when I first filed. The waiting week is unpaid but you do eventually get it back. Mine took forever to show up though.

•How long did it take for you to get yours? I'm already stressing about money.

The waiting week policy exists to help reduce fraudulent claims and give Washington ESD time to verify your eligibility. You'll receive payment for that week when your benefit year ends or when you exhaust your regular UI benefits, whichever comes first.

•That seems like a weird system. Why not just process claims faster instead of making people wait?

•It's been this way for years. The waiting week also helps the state manage cash flow for the unemployment trust fund.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD about my waiting week payment for months. Their phone lines are always busy and I can never talk to an actual person about when I'll see that money.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it recently - it's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling process for you so you don't have to sit on hold forever. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone about specific claim issues.

•If you haven't been paid for ANY weeks after 3 weeks, something else is going on. Check if your claim is under adjudication or if there are any issues flagged in your account.

The waiting week thing is so stupid. Like we're already struggling financially and they make us wait even longer for money we're entitled to. Makes no sense.

•I totally agree. It feels like punishment for losing your job through no fault of your own.

•At least we eventually get it back though. Better than nothing I guess.

Pro tip: make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even during the waiting week. Some people think they don't need to file that first week and it messes up their whole claim timeline.

•This is important advice! I almost made that mistake when I first filed.

•Good point. I did file for that first week even though it showed $0.

Does the waiting week apply to everyone or are there exceptions? I'm on standby status if that makes a difference.

•The waiting week applies to most new regular UI claims. Standby claims might have different rules - you'd need to check with Washington ESD directly about your specific situation.

•Ugh, more reason to try calling them. The phone system is impossible.

I got my waiting week paid out when my benefit year ended last month. It showed up as a separate payment a few days after my regular benefits stopped. So yes, you do eventually get it!

•That's reassuring to hear! Was it the full weekly benefit amount?

Hailey O'Leary
•Yes, it was the same amount as my regular weekly payments. Just took forever to actually receive it.

Question - if I work part time during my waiting week, does that affect getting the payment later?

Roger Romero
•You should still report any work during your waiting week just like any other week. It might affect the amount you eventually receive, but you still need to report it honestly.

•Makes sense. Better to be honest about everything than risk getting in trouble later.

The whole Washington ESD system is confusing. They should explain this stuff better when you first apply instead of leaving people guessing.

•Totally agree. I had to learn everything the hard way through trial and error.

I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD about my waiting week payment and they were able to explain exactly when I'd receive it. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone directly about your specific situation.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's really reasonable for what you get - basically saves you hours of trying to get through on your own. Check out their website for details.

Just to confirm - even if my claim gets approved late, I'll still get that waiting week paid eventually right?

Niko Ramsey
•Yes, as long as your claim is ultimately approved, you should receive payment for the waiting week at the end of your benefit period.

Been waiting 6 months for my waiting week payment and still nothing. Anyone else having issues getting theirs?

Jean Claude
•That seems way too long. You might want to contact Washington ESD directly or try using a service like Claimyr to get through to them about this specific issue.

•Yeah I think I need to be more aggressive about following up on this.

The waiting week is just one of those bureaucratic things we have to deal with. At least Washington still pays it out eventually unlike some other states.

•Good point. I guess I should be grateful it's not just lost forever.

Make sure to keep track of when you filed and when your benefit year ends so you know when to expect that waiting week payment. I almost forgot about mine completely.
