Do I get paid for my waiting week on Washington ESD unemployment claim?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm confused about the waiting week. I filed my weekly claim but haven't received any payment yet. My claim status shows active but no payment amount. Do I eventually get paid for this first week or is it just lost? I've been out of work for 3 weeks now and really need every dollar I can get. The Washington ESD website isn't super clear about this.

Unfortunately you don't get paid for the waiting week in Washington. It's basically a one-week delay before benefits start. So your first payable week will be week 2 of your claim.

•That really sucks, I was hoping I'd get it eventually. So that week is just completely lost?

•Yeah, it's gone. Washington ESD uses it as a way to reduce costs I think. Most states do this now.

The waiting week is unpaid but you still need to file your weekly claim for it. Don't skip filing even though you won't get money for it - it establishes your claim properly with Washington ESD.

•Good to know, I did file for it. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

•Wait, so we have to file claims for weeks we don't get paid? That seems pointless.

•It's not pointless - Washington ESD needs that first week on record to calculate your benefit year and track your eligibility properly.

I remember being confused about this too when I first filed. The waiting week is basically Washington ESD's way of making sure you're actually unemployed and not just filing frivolously. It's annoying but standard practice.

•That's such BS though. People filing for unemployment are already desperate for money.

•I agree it's frustrating, especially when you're already struggling financially. But at least after that first week, payments should come regularly if you keep filing.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about this same question. Spent hours on hold trying to reach someone. Finally used Claimyr.com to get connected - they have this system that calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me so much time and frustration. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work for reaching Washington ESD?

•Yeah it works great. I was able to talk to an actual Washington ESD rep within a few hours instead of spending days trying to call.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's worth it when you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Way better than the alternative of never getting through.

The waiting week policy is part of RCW 50.20.010 in Washington state law. It's designed to ensure claimants are genuinely seeking work and not just taking a temporary break. While it seems harsh, it's been standard since the 1990s.

•Thanks for the official explanation. Still frustrating but at least I understand the reasoning now.

•Do other states do this too or is it just Washington?

•Most states have some version of a waiting week, though the specifics vary. Washington's is pretty standard.

•I feel you, it's really tough when you're already struggling financially.

•Hang in there, at least after this week you should start getting regular payments if everything goes smoothly.

I remember when I first filed, I thought maybe they'd pay the waiting week at the end of your claim or something. Nope, it's just gone forever. Such a cruel policy when people are already desperate.

•Same! I kept checking my account thinking maybe there was a delay or something.

•That's exactly what I was hoping for - that maybe they'd pay it at the end or something.

•Unfortunately not. It's just one of those things you have to accept about the Washington ESD system.

Pro tip: make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on time even for the waiting week. If you miss filing, it can mess up your whole claim timeline with Washington ESD.

•Good reminder, I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly filings.

•What happens if you accidentally skip a week? Asking for a friend...

•You might be able to request a late filing but it's a hassle. Better to just set a reminder and file every week.

The waiting week is really just Washington ESD's way of saving money on the backs of unemployed people. It's not about fraud prevention like they claim - it's purely financial.

Paolo Longo
•Exactly! If they really cared about fraud they'd have better verification systems, not just make people wait.

•That's a frustrating perspective but probably accurate. Feels like punishment for being unemployed.

When I had questions about my waiting week, I tried calling Washington ESD for days with no luck. Someone on here recommended Claimyr and it actually worked - got through to an agent the same day I signed up. Really helpful for getting specific questions answered about your claim.

•That's the second mention of that service in this thread. Might be worth looking into if I have more questions.

•I'm skeptical of any service that charges to help with government benefits. Seems like it should be free.

•I get the skepticism, but when you can't get through to Washington ESD any other way, it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Just to clarify for anyone reading - you DO need to file your weekly claim for the waiting week, you just won't receive payment for it. Don't skip filing thinking it doesn't matter!

•Thanks for emphasizing that, I made sure to file mine even though I won't get paid.

This waiting week thing is so dumb. Like we're not already going through enough stress being unemployed, now we have to wait an extra week for money we desperately need.

Mei Wong
•I totally agree, it feels like adding insult to injury when you're already struggling.

•It's especially hard when you have bills due and were counting on that first week's payment.

•Exactly! The timing couldn't be worse when you're already in a financial crisis.

For anyone still confused about the waiting week - think of it as week 0 of your benefits. You file the claim but get $0. Week 1 is when you actually start getting paid (assuming everything is approved).

Mei Wong
•That's a helpful way to think about it, thanks for the simple explanation.

NeonNebula
•So basically we're working for free that first week by filing the claim?

Malik Thomas
•Not really working, just establishing your eligibility. But yeah, you're doing the paperwork without getting paid for that week.

I had to call Washington ESD about something related to my waiting week and couldn't get through for days. Finally tried Claimyr after seeing it recommended here - worked great and got my question answered quickly. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person at Washington ESD.

The waiting week really is just gone forever. No getting it back at the end of your claim or anything like that. Just one of those Washington ESD policies you have to live with unfortunately.

Mei Wong
•Yeah, I've accepted that it's just lost money at this point. At least now I know what to expect.

Omar Farouk
•It's such a small amount compared to what you'll get over the whole claim period, but it still stings when you need every dollar.

For what it's worth, once you get past the waiting week, Washington ESD payments are usually pretty reliable if you keep filing on time and don't have any eligibility issues.
0 coins
Mei Wong
•That's reassuring to hear. Looking forward to getting past this first week hurdle.

AstroAlpha
•Yep, the waiting week is the worst part. After that it's just the regular weekly routine.

•Exactly. The waiting week is like a hazing ritual - once you're through it, the rest is much smoother.

Bottom line: Washington ESD waiting week = no payment but you still have to file. It sucks but that's how the system works. Just gotta push through it.
