How long does it take to get your waiting week for unemployment processed by Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD three days ago and I'm trying to understand when my waiting week will be processed. The website says there's a mandatory waiting week before benefits can be paid, but I can't find clear info on how long it takes for them to actually process it. My claim status just shows 'pending' right now. Does anyone know the typical timeframe for Washington ESD to clear the waiting week requirement? I'm getting anxious about when I'll actually see my first payment.

The waiting week isn't something that gets 'processed' separately - it's just the first week you file for that you won't get paid for. You still need to file your weekly claim for that week though. Once your claim is approved and you've completed your waiting week, payments start with the second week you're eligible.

•Oh I see, so I still need to keep filing weekly claims during the waiting week? I thought I just had to wait for them to approve something.

•Yes exactly! You file for every week you're unemployed, but the first eligible week is unpaid. It's not a processing delay, it's just policy.

I'm in the same boat! Filed last week and my claim is still showing pending. Been trying to call Washington ESD to check on the status but can never get through. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•Ugh the phone situation is impossible. I tried calling for two weeks straight, always got the busy signal or got disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•Actually, there's this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

From my experience, if your claim is approved without any issues, you should see your first actual payment about 2-3 weeks after filing. That includes the waiting week plus processing time. But if there are any flags or they need more info, it can take much longer.

•What kind of flags would delay it? My claim has been pending for over a week now and I'm worried something's wrong.

•Common issues are employer disputes, unclear reason for job separation, or missing documentation. Check your eServices account to see if there are any outstanding requirements.

Just want to clarify something - the waiting week starts from when you first become eligible, not when you file the claim. So if you were unemployed for a week before filing, that might count as your waiting week depending on the circumstances.

•Wait, really? I was unemployed for about 5 days before I filed. Does that mean my waiting week already started?

•It depends on exactly when you became unemployed and when you filed. Washington ESD looks at complete weeks, so if you weren't unemployed for a full week before filing, your waiting week would be the first full week you claim.

The waiting week thing is so confusing! I thought I had to literally wait a week without doing anything before I could even apply. Wish they made this clearer on the website.

•Yeah the terminology is misleading. You don't wait to apply - you apply immediately. The 'waiting week' just means the first week you're eligible won't be paid.

•Exactly! I made the same mistake and filed a week late thinking I had to wait. Lost out on potential benefits because of the confusion.

For what it's worth, my claim took about 10 days to move from pending to approved, and then I got my first payment (minus the waiting week) about 4 days after that. But this was back in October, so timing might be different now.

•That's helpful to know! Did you have to do anything special to speed up the process or did it just go automatically?

•Nothing special, just made sure to file my weekly claims on time and didn't have any complicating factors like multiple employers or a complicated separation reason.

Been dealing with Washington ESD for months now due to an ongoing adjudication issue. Pro tip: if you need to actually speak with someone, I had success with Claimyr. They got me through to an agent within about 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call myself for weeks.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money obviously.

•I can't remember the exact amount but it was worth it for me since I was losing way more money sitting in adjudication limbo. They have all the details on their site.

Important reminder: even during your waiting week, you MUST continue to do your job search activities and be available for work. The waiting week isn't a vacation from the requirements - you still need to meet all the conditions for receiving UI.

•Good point! I forgot about the job search requirement during my waiting week and almost got in trouble for it later.

•How many job contacts do we need to make per week? I couldn't find clear info on this.

•It's typically 3 job contacts per week, but check with WorkSource or your eligibility determination letter to be sure. Keep detailed records of all your search activities.

Honestly the whole system is so slow and confusing. Filed in December and still having issues getting consistent payments. At least the waiting week is only a one-time thing though.

•December?! That's way too long. Have you tried appealing or getting help from an advocate?

•I've tried everything. Currently working with a local legal aid office but it's still a mess. The system is just overwhelmed I think.

Quick question - if my claim gets denied initially, do I still have to serve a waiting week when I appeal and eventually get approved?

•Good question! If your appeal is successful, your waiting week would typically be applied to the first week you were eligible in your original claim period, not when the appeal was decided.

•That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

The waiting week is frustrating but honestly it's better than some states that have longer waiting periods. Just wish Washington ESD was more transparent about timeline expectations.

•Agreed. The uncertainty is the worst part. You never know if something is processing normally or if there's a problem.

•Exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - needed to actually talk to someone to understand what was happening with my claim status.
