How long is waiting week for unemployment - Washington ESD timing question
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm trying to understand the waiting week requirement. I know there's a one-week waiting period but I'm confused about when it actually starts counting. Does the waiting week begin from when I first filed my claim or from my first weekly claim? Also, how long does it typically take to get my first payment after the waiting week is over? I'm getting different information from different sources and need to plan my finances accordingly.

The waiting week starts with your first compensable week, not when you initially file. So if you filed last week, your first weekly claim would be your waiting week. After that, it usually takes about 2-3 business days for direct deposit once your claim is processed.

•Thanks! So if I file my first weekly claim this Sunday, that would be my waiting week and I'd get paid for the following week?

•Exactly. The first week you're eligible is unpaid, then you get paid starting with the second week.

Just went through this myself. The waiting week is exactly 7 days from your first weekly claim submission. But here's the thing - if there are any issues with your claim, it can take weeks longer. I had to verify my identity and that delayed everything by almost a month.

•Did you have to call Washington ESD to resolve the identity verification issue?

•Yeah, that was a nightmare. Spent hours trying to get through on the phone.

•For situations like that, I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

wait so the waiting week means I don't get paid for that week at all?? that seems really unfair when people are already struggling financially

•Unfortunately yes, that's how it works. The waiting week is unpaid - it's been a requirement for decades.

•ugh that's so frustrating. I wish they'd just tell you that upfront instead of making you figure it out

The waiting week is a federal requirement that most states have. Washington ESD follows the standard one-week waiting period. What's important is making sure you file your weekly claims on time every week, even during the waiting week, or you could lose benefits for that week entirely.

•This is really important advice. I missed filing one week early on and it created a whole mess with my claim.

•Exactly. The system is very strict about the weekly filing schedule.

From my experience, the actual waiting week timing depends on when your claim is approved too. If there's any adjudication or verification needed, your waiting week doesn't start until all that's resolved.

Ava Martinez
•So if my claim goes into adjudication, the waiting week timer doesn't start until that's finished?

Paolo Moretti
•Correct. You have to be eligible for benefits before the waiting week even begins.

•This is why I ended up using Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD. My adjudication was taking forever and I needed to know what was happening.

One thing to remember is that the waiting week applies to your benefit year, not just when you first file. So if you work for a while then become unemployed again within the same benefit year, you don't have to serve another waiting week.

•Good to know! I wasn't sure if it reset if you went back to work temporarily.

•Nope, it's one waiting week per benefit year regardless of how many times you claim.

Just be prepared for delays beyond the waiting week. Even after everything is approved, it can take additional time for payments to start flowing. I'd plan for at least 2-3 weeks from your first weekly claim before seeing money.

•That's helpful for planning purposes. Better to expect longer than be disappointed.

•Agreed. The system is slow even when everything goes right.

I'm in week 3 of waiting and still haven't gotten anything. My claim shows approved but no payments yet. Getting really worried about bills piling up.

•If it shows approved, you should definitely call Washington ESD to check on the payment status. There might be a processing issue.

•I've been trying to call but can never get through. The lines are always busy.

•This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helps. They can get you connected to an actual agent instead of getting stuck in the phone queue.

The waiting week is just the beginning. Make sure you're also meeting all the job search requirements during that time. Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work even during the waiting week.

•Do I need to log job search activities during the waiting week?

Javier Gomez
•Yes, you need to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment from day one.

Been through this process twice now. The waiting week is always exactly 7 days from your first eligible week. But what really matters is making sure all your paperwork is correct from the start - any mistakes will delay everything way beyond just the waiting week.

•Double-check your work history dates, make sure your reason for separation is accurate, and verify all your contact information.

honestly the whole unemployment system is so confusing. they should just pay people from week one instead of making everyone wait when they're already in financial trouble

•I agree it's frustrating but the waiting week helps prevent fraud and makes sure people are genuinely unemployed.

•i guess that makes sense but it still sucks when you need money for rent

Make sure you understand the difference between your waiting week and any processing delays. The waiting week is standard, but if Washington ESD is backed up with claims, that's additional time on top of the waiting week.

Ava Martinez
•How can you tell the difference between normal processing and actual delays?

•Check your claim status online regularly. If it shows any kind of hold or pending status, that's beyond the normal waiting week.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit immediately when you file. It's much faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. My first payment came 3 days after the waiting week ended because I had direct deposit ready.

Ava Martinez
•Good advice! I'll make sure to set that up right away.

•Yeah, the debit card can take 7-10 business days to arrive, which just adds more waiting time.

I had a weird situation where my waiting week got reset because of an issue with my employer's response. Ended up having to serve the waiting week twice, which Washington ESD later said was an error on their part.

•Eventually, but it took months to resolve. Had to appeal and everything.

•Cases like that are why services like Claimyr exist - sometimes you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD to straighten out complex issues.

Remember that the waiting week applies even if you're on standby status. I work in seasonal construction and thought standby was different, but I still had to serve the waiting week when I first filed.

Ava Martinez
•I didn't realize standby still had a waiting week. That's good to know.

The key thing is just to be patient and keep filing your weekly claims even during the waiting week. I know it's stressful when you need money, but the system does work eventually.

Ava Martinez
•Thanks for the encouragement. It's definitely stressful but good to know it works out in the end.

Just want to add that if you have any questions about your specific situation during the waiting week, don't hesitate to contact Washington ESD. It's better to ask questions early than to have problems later.

Ava Martinez
•Definitely will do. Better safe than sorry with unemployment claims.

•And if you can't get through on the phone, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me. Worth considering if you need to talk to someone urgently.
