Confused about how does the waiting week work for unemployment in Washington ESD
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm trying to understand this waiting week thing. Do I still need to file my weekly claim for the waiting week? And when do I actually start getting paid? The website isn't super clear about this and I'm worried I'll mess something up. Has anyone gone through this recently who can explain how it actually works?

Yes you definitely need to file your weekly claim for the waiting week! Even though you won't get paid for it, Washington ESD uses that week to establish your claim pattern. If you skip filing that first week it can delay your whole claim process.

•Ok good to know, I was planning to file it anyway but wasn't sure. So I file for week 1 but don't get paid, then week 2 I file and get paid for that week only?

•Exactly right. The waiting week is basically unpaid but required for processing purposes.

The waiting week is such a pain honestly. I remember being so confused about it when I first filed. You have to treat it like any other week - file your claim, report any work/income, do your job searches, everything.

•Wait do you have to do job searches during the waiting week too? I thought that started after you got approved.

•Yep, job search requirements start immediately. Three job contacts per week logged in WorkSourceWA.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my waiting period. Spent hours on hold multiple times before I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent. They have this video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made getting answers so much easier than trying to call myself.

•Oh interesting, I hadn't heard of that. How much does it cost to use?

•It's definitely worth it compared to wasting entire days trying to get through on your own. The connection success rate is way higher than calling direct.

•I'm always skeptical of third-party services but honestly the Washington ESD phone system is so broken that I might try this too.

Just to clarify the timeline - your waiting week is always your first week of unemployment, not your first week after filing. So if you were laid off on a Wednesday, that partial week would be your waiting week. Then the first full week after that is when payments would start (assuming your claim gets approved).

•Oh that's a good distinction. My last day of work was Friday so my waiting week would be the following Sunday-Saturday period.

•This is confusing me more lol. So if I got laid off mid-week, do I file for that partial week or wait until the next full week to start filing?

•You can file for partial weeks too. Washington ESD calculates partial week benefits based on the days you were unemployed in that week.

UGHHH the waiting week is such BS!! Like we're already struggling financially and they make us wait an extra week for no reason. It's just another way the system screws over working people.

•I feel you on that frustration but there is actually a purpose to it. Helps prevent fraudulent claims and gives Washington ESD time to verify employment history.

•Maybe but it still hits hardest when you can least afford it. Just another bureaucratic hurdle IMO.

One thing to watch out for - if your claim gets denied for any reason, you don't get paid for the waiting week at all. Only if your claim is fully approved do you eventually get compensated for that week. Learned this the hard way when I had to appeal my disqualification.

•Wait so if my claim is approved normally, I do get paid for the waiting week eventually?

•No no, sorry for the confusion. You never get paid for the waiting week period. I meant you only get your regular weekly benefits if approved.

•Actually I think there might be some situations where you can get the waiting week paid retroactively but it's pretty rare and specific circumstances.

Make sure you're logging your job search activities during the waiting week too! I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to track them until payments started and had to scramble to recreate my log when they asked for it later.

•Good point. The job search requirements are active as soon as you file, not when payments start.

•Thanks for the reminder. I've been applying places but haven't been logging them properly in WorkSourceWA yet.

•lol 'don't overthink it' is easier said than done when you're stressed about money and trying not to mess up your claim

•fair point. i just mean the actual process is straightforward even if the explanation is confusing

I remember calling Washington ESD like 20 times trying to understand this exact question. Never could get through until someone on here mentioned Claimyr. Got connected within an hour and the agent explained everything clearly. Worth every penny to avoid that phone system nightmare.

•How long ago was this? I'm wondering if their call volume has gotten better recently.

•This was like 2 months ago and the hold times were still brutal. Probably even worse now with seasonal layoffs starting.

Pro tip: Screenshot or print your weekly claim confirmations during the waiting week. Sometimes the system glitches and you need proof you filed on time. Happened to me and caused a whole mess with my claim timing.

•Good thinking, I'll make sure to save screenshots of everything. Better safe than sorry with this stuff.

•Yes! Keep records of everything. The Washington ESD system isn't always reliable and you want documentation if issues come up.

Does anyone know if the waiting week applies to standby claims too? My employer said they might call me back soon but want to file just in case.

•Standby claims still have the waiting week requirement. The rules are basically the same as regular UI claims.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if standby had different rules since it's temporary.

The waiting week thing caught me off guard too when I first filed. I was expecting my first payment a week earlier than it actually came. Just budget for that extra week of delay so you're not scrambling financially.

•Exactly this. Plan for the delay upfront rather than being surprised by it later.

•Yeah I'm trying to stretch my savings to cover the extra time. Good advice to plan ahead for it.

I got so frustrated trying to reach Washington ESD about my waiting week questions that I almost gave up. Then tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - got through to an actual person who walked me through everything. Sometimes paying for help is worth it when the free options don't work.

•It's sad that we have to pay extra just to get basic information about our own benefits, but you're right that sometimes it's the only way.

•True, it shouldn't be necessary but the alternative was wasting days trying to get through on my own.

Just went through this whole process last month. File your weekly claims starting with week 1 (the waiting week), keep doing job searches, report any income accurately. You'll get paid starting with week 2 if everything goes smoothly. The waiting week never gets paid but it's required for your claim to process correctly.

•This is really helpful, thank you. Sounds like I'm on the right track then. Just need to be patient for that first payment.

•Yep patience is key. The first payment always feels like it takes forever but once you're in the rhythm it's pretty straightforward.

reminder that if you work ANY hours during your waiting week you still need to report them even though you're not getting paid that week anyway. learned this when I picked up a small gig and wasn't sure if I needed to report it

•Good point! All income reporting rules apply even during the waiting week.
