Washington ESD waiting week criteria for unemployment - how does it work?
I'm trying to understand how the waiting week works for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. I just filed my initial claim last week and I'm confused about whether I need to serve a waiting week before getting paid. Some people tell me there's no waiting week anymore, others say there still is one. Can someone explain what the actual waiting week criteria is for unemployment in Washington? Do I need to file weekly claims during this waiting period or do I just wait? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up if I don't understand this correctly.

Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2021. You don't have to serve an unpaid waiting week anymore - you can get paid for your first week of unemployment as long as you're eligible. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time.

•Oh really? That's great news! So I should file my first weekly claim this Sunday then?

•Yes, file your weekly claim as soon as it's available. Don't skip any weeks or you might lose benefits for those weeks.

Wait I'm confused too. I thought there was still a waiting week? When I filed in 2022 I had to wait a week before getting paid.

•That might have been due to adjudication or verification issues, not a waiting week. Washington hasn't had a waiting week requirement since the law changed.

•Ah that makes sense, my claim was held up for identity verification for like 3 weeks.

The waiting week was officially eliminated in Washington state effective January 2021. Before that, claimants had to serve one unpaid waiting week before receiving benefits. Now you can be paid for your first week of eligible unemployment. You still need to file weekly claims starting with your first week though.

•Thanks for the clarification! So there's no waiting period at all anymore?

•Correct, no unpaid waiting week. But you still have to meet all the other eligibility requirements - available for work, actively seeking work, etc.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about this exact thing but their phone lines are impossible. Spent 2 hours on hold yesterday and got disconnected. Has anyone found a better way to reach them?

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was way easier than trying to call myself.

just to add - even though theres no waiting week you still might not get paid right away if your claim goes into adjudication. thats different from the waiting week thing

•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?

•lots of things - if you quit your job, got fired, have wages from multiple states, identity verification issues, stuff like that

To be completely clear about the waiting week criteria: Washington state used to require a one-week unpaid waiting period before benefits could be paid. This was eliminated by legislation in 2021. Now claimants can receive payment for their first week of unemployment if they meet all other eligibility requirements.

•So glad they got rid of that waiting week. It was really hard when you're already struggling financially to have to wait even longer for help.

•Absolutely. The waiting week was an unnecessary barrier for people who needed assistance immediately after losing their job.

I remember when they changed this! It was part of the pandemic response initially but then they made it permanent. Best change Washington ESD has made in years honestly.

•Yeah it was one of the few good things that came out of all the unemployment system changes during COVID.

•Exactly. Though the system is still a pain to navigate sometimes.

Does anyone know if this applies to standby claims too? I'm on temporary layoff and wondering if I still need to wait a week.

•The elimination of the waiting week applies to all types of unemployment claims in Washington, including standby claims. As long as you're eligible, you can be paid for your first week.

•Perfect, thanks! I was worried I'd have to go without pay for an extra week on top of the layoff.

THANK GOD they got rid of the waiting week. When I was unemployed in 2019 that extra week of no money was brutal. Made no sense to make people wait when they already lost their income.

•Right? Like you're already stressed about losing your job and then they make you wait even longer for help.

•Exactly! It was just cruel policy that hurt people when they were already down.

Quick question - if there's no waiting week, when should I expect my first payment? I filed my claim on Monday and submitted my first weekly claim yesterday.

•If your claim is approved without adjudication issues, you should typically see payment within 2-3 business days after filing your weekly claim. It goes to direct deposit or debit card depending on what you selected.

•Awesome, I set up direct deposit so hopefully it comes through soon. Thanks!

I was so confused about this when I filed last month. The old information online still talks about waiting weeks sometimes. Glad to confirm there really isn't one anymore.

•Yeah some of the older forum posts and websites haven't been updated. It's confusing when you're trying to figure out what's current.

•Definitely. I almost didn't file my first weekly claim because I thought I had to wait.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD about this or other questions, I had success using Claimyr too. They got me connected to an agent who cleared up my confusion about the waiting week and some other claim issues.

•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money being unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their site at claimyr.com to see the current pricing. For me it was worth it to get answers instead of spending days trying to call myself.

•Ha, that's the next thing to worry about. At least we can get paid while we figure that out though!

Just want to emphasize what others have said - NO WAITING WEEK in Washington since 2021. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. File your weekly claims from day one if you're eligible.

One last thing to add - even without the waiting week, make sure you're meeting all the other requirements like job search activities. That's where people sometimes run into issues.

•Good point. The waiting week is gone but all the other eligibility rules still apply.

GalacticGuardian
•Exactly. You need to be able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and meet any other specific requirements for your claim type.

This has been really informative. I wish Washington ESD made this clearer on their website. Took me forever to find definitive information about the waiting week elimination.

•Yeah their website could definitely be more user-friendly. Half the time I can't find what I'm looking for.

•That's another reason I ended up using Claimyr - sometimes it's just easier to talk to an actual person at Washington ESD to get clear answers instead of trying to navigate their website.
