Washington ESD waiting week for unemployment - do I still have to serve it?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm seeing something about a 'waiting week' in my account. I thought they got rid of this during COVID but I'm not sure if it's back now. Do I still have to serve a waiting week before getting benefits? I'm really confused about whether I'll get paid for my first week of filing or if I have to wait an extra week. My savings are pretty much gone and I need to know what to expect.

The waiting week was temporarily suspended during the pandemic but it's back in effect now. You have to serve one unpaid waiting week before you can receive unemployment benefits in Washington. So your first payable week will actually be your second week of filing weekly claims.

•So even if I file this week, I won't get paid until the week after next? That's brutal when you're already struggling financially.

•Unfortunately yes, that's how it works. The waiting week applies to your first payable week, not your first week of filing. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims though or you'll lose benefits.

Wait I'm confused too... I thought the waiting week was eliminated permanently? My friend got unemployment last year and didn't have to serve one.

•It was only suspended temporarily. The waiting week requirement was reinstated in 2023. If your friend filed during the suspension period, they wouldn't have had to serve it.

•Oh that makes sense now. Thanks for clearing that up!

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for three days to ask about this exact thing but I can't get through to anyone! The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. How is anyone supposed to get answers?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and disconnections. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. I used it last month when I had questions about my job search requirements and got through in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call.

The waiting week is such garbage honestly. You're already unemployed and struggling, then they make you wait even longer for your first payment. It's like they want people to suffer.

•I totally agree! It made sense maybe decades ago but with how expensive everything is now, that extra week without income can be devastating.

•It's supposed to prevent fraud or something but really it just hurts people who legitimately need help.

Just to clarify for everyone - the waiting week applies to your benefit year, not every time you file. So if you exhaust your benefits and have to file a new claim in a different benefit year, you'd have to serve another waiting week. But if you're just continuing claims in the same benefit year, no additional waiting week.

•That's good to know at least. So if I find a job and then lose it again within the same benefit year, I wouldn't have to serve another waiting week?

Molly Hansen
•Correct, as long as you're still within the same benefit year and haven't exhausted your total benefit amount.

Does anyone know if the waiting week counts toward your total weeks of benefits? Like if you're eligible for 26 weeks, do you actually get 26 paid weeks or only 25 because of the waiting week?

•Good question! The waiting week doesn't count against your total weeks of benefits. If you're eligible for 26 weeks, you'll still get 26 paid weeks - the waiting week is in addition to that.

•Oh that's a relief! I was worried I'd lose a week of benefits entirely.

I'm dealing with this right now and it's so stressful. Filed my claim two weeks ago, served my waiting week last week, and I'm supposed to get my first payment this week but nothing has shown up yet. Should I be worried?

•Payments usually process on Tuesday/Wednesday after you file your weekly claim on Sunday. If you filed this past Sunday and it's only Tuesday, give it another day. If it's later in the week and still nothing, that could indicate an issue with your claim.

•It's Thursday and still nothing. I'm starting to panic that something went wrong with my claim.

•This is exactly why I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. When my payments were delayed I needed to talk to someone immediately, not spend days trying to get through on the phone.

For anyone wondering about the timeline: File initial claim → Serve waiting week (file weekly claim but don't get paid) → File second weekly claim → Receive first payment (assuming no issues). The whole process takes about 2-3 weeks from initial filing to first payment.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I wish Washington ESD explained this timeline more clearly on their website.

•Yeah their communication could definitely be better. A lot of people get confused and think they did something wrong when their first week doesn't pay out.

Just went through this whole process myself. The waiting week is annoying but at least you can still do your job search activities during that week and they count toward your requirements. Don't skip looking for work just because you're not getting paid yet!

•Good point! I almost made that mistake thinking the job search stuff didn't matter during the waiting week.

•Yep, all the regular requirements still apply - job searches, being available for work, etc. The only difference is you don't get paid for that first week.

I remember when they suspended the waiting week during COVID and it was such a relief. Actually getting paid for your first week when you desperately needed it made such a huge difference. Too bad they brought it back.

•Same here! I filed in 2021 and was so grateful not to have that extra week of no income. Going back to the old system feels like a step backward.

Vincent Bimbach
•Exactly! They proved it wasn't necessary during the pandemic but went back to it anyway. It's all about making the system more difficult for people who need help.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any issues during your waiting week that cause your claim to go into adjudication, it can delay everything even more. Make sure you answer all the questions on your weekly claim accurately.

•What kind of issues typically cause adjudication during the waiting week?

•Things like reporting work or earnings incorrectly, issues with your separation from your last job, or problems with your work search activities. Even small mistakes can trigger a review.

•Great, something else to worry about. This whole system is so complicated and stressful.

Has anyone tried calling first thing in the morning? I heard that's the best time to get through to Washington ESD but I've never had luck with it.

•I've tried calling at 8am when they open and the lines are still jammed. Honestly that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might be worth looking into if you really need to talk to someone.

•Yeah I'm starting to think that might be my only option. The regular phone system is just impossible.

For what it's worth, the waiting week isn't unique to Washington. Most states have it, though some did eliminate it permanently after COVID. We're not the only ones dealing with this frustration.

•That doesn't make it any less frustrating when you're the one trying to pay rent with no income!

•Oh absolutely, I'm not defending it at all. Just pointing out it's a widespread policy issue, not just Washington being difficult.

The most important thing is to keep filing your weekly claims even during the waiting week. I know someone who stopped filing because they thought there was no point if they weren't getting paid, and it messed up their whole claim.

•Yes! This is crucial. Missing even one weekly claim can disqualify you from benefits entirely, even if it's during the unpaid waiting week.

Daniel Rivera
•Good to know. I'll make sure to keep filing every week no matter what. This whole system is confusing but I can't afford to make mistakes.
