Do you get paid for unemployment waiting week in Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm confused about the waiting week. My friend told me there's a week where you don't get paid but I can't find clear info on this. Do I still need to file my weekly claim for that week even though I won't get paid? And does Washington state still have a waiting week or did they get rid of it? I'm really stressed about money right now and need to know what to expect.

Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2020. You should get paid for your first week if you're eligible and file your weekly claim correctly. Make sure you're filing your claims on time every week.

•Oh thank god, that's such a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait an extra week for my first payment. So I just file normally then?

•Yes, just file your weekly claims as normal. The payment should process if everything else is approved.

yeah washington got rid of the waiting week during covid and never brought it back. you'll get paid for week 1 if your claim is approved

•That's correct. Many people still think there's a waiting week because other states still have them, but Washington ESD doesn't require one anymore.

•Wait really? I thought I had to wait a week when I filed last year. Maybe I'm remembering wrong or my claim had other issues.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to confirm this exact question last month. Spent hours calling and kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. The agent confirmed no waiting week in Washington.

•How does that service work? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and can never get through.

•It basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my claim.

Just to clarify the timeline - Washington suspended the waiting week in April 2020 and made it permanent. So any claim filed since then doesn't have a waiting week. You still need to serve your weekly claims starting with week 1 though.

•Thanks for the clarification! I was confused because my mom had to do a waiting week years ago but that must have been before they changed it.

•Exactly right. The waiting week was a thing for decades before 2020, so older information might still mention it.

WAIT A MINUTE. I'm looking at my old claim from 2023 and I swear I didn't get paid for my first week. Let me check my records again because now I'm second guessing everything.

•You might be thinking of a different issue. Sometimes the first payment is delayed for other reasons like identity verification or job separation verification, but that's not a waiting week.

Harper Collins
•OH! That might be it. My claim was held up for identity verification for like 2 weeks. I was confusing that delay with a waiting week.

•This happens to a lot of people. Delays aren't the same as waiting weeks but they feel the same when you need money.

the confusion is real because if you google 'unemployment waiting week' you get info from all different states and they all have different rules

•Yes! That's exactly what happened to me. I was reading about other states accidentally.

•Pro tip: always add 'Washington' or 'WA' to your unemployment searches to get state-specific info.

I can confirm no waiting week in Washington. Filed my claim in December 2024 and got paid for week 1 after my claim was approved. Just make sure you file your weekly claim on time.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? Mine is still showing 'under review' after a week.

Edwards Hugo
•Mine took about 10 days but I know some people wait longer if there are complications with their job separation or work history.

Just went through this whole process. No waiting week but you do have to be careful about reporting any work or earnings correctly on your weekly claims. That can affect your payments.

•Good to know. I did some gig work last week so I'll make sure to report that correctly.

•Yes, always report all work and earnings even if it's just a few hours. Washington ESD will calculate the deduction from your benefit amount.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and can confirm it works. Got through to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes instead of wasting my whole day calling. The agent I spoke with confirmed no waiting week and helped me understand my claim status.

•How much does that cost? If it's reasonable I might try it because I've been calling for weeks with no luck.

•Check their website for pricing. For me it was worth it just to get actual answers instead of guessing about my claim.

FINALLY someone asked this question! I've been wondering the same thing but was afraid to look stupid. Glad to know Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore.

•Right? I felt dumb asking but there's so much confusing info out there.

•No stupid questions when it comes to unemployment. The system is confusing enough without outdated information floating around.

For anyone still confused: Washington ESD website says 'There is no waiting week for unemployment benefits in Washington state.' It's right there in their FAQ section if you search for waiting week.

•I must have missed that when I was looking. Thanks for pointing me to the right section!

•That's reassuring to hear from someone with experience. I was really worried about having to go another week without income.

•Yeah the waiting week thing is from like the old days. Washington got rid of it and it's been great for people who need benefits right away.

Wait I'm confused now. My brother in Oregon had to do a waiting week last year. Is this just a Washington thing or did other states get rid of it too?

Donna Cline
•It varies by state. Washington eliminated it but many other states still have waiting weeks. Your brother's experience in Oregon doesn't apply to Washington claims.

•Ah ok that makes sense. I was mixing up the state rules. Thanks for clarifying!

The thing that trips people up is that even though there's no waiting week, your first payment might still be delayed for other reasons. Don't panic if you don't get paid immediately after filing your first weekly claim.

Emma Morales
•What kind of other reasons? I want to know what to expect.

Tasia Synder
•Things like identity verification, job separation issues, or if your employer contests your claim. These aren't waiting weeks but they can delay your first payment.

•This is good info. I was freaking out when my first payment was late but it was just identity verification holding it up.

PSA: even with no waiting week you still have to actively file your weekly claims starting with week 1. Don't skip filing thinking you won't get paid anyway.

Emma Morales
•Good reminder! I was wondering if I should skip the first week but I'll definitely file it now.

•Yes this is important! If you don't file for a week you can't go back and get benefits for that week later.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question and finally got through using Claimyr. The whole process was so much easier than trying to call directly. The agent was super helpful and confirmed everything people are saying here about no waiting week.

•I keep seeing people mention this Claimyr thing. Might have to check it out because calling Washington ESD directly is impossible.

•Seriously try it. I wasted so many hours trying to call myself before someone recommended it to me.

Just to add one more confirmation - filed my claim in January 2025 and got paid for week 1. No waiting week in Washington state. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on schedule!

•Perfect timing on this info since I'm filing for January too. Thanks for the recent confirmation!

•No problem! It's always nerve-wracking filing for the first time so I wanted to share my recent experience.

Bottom line for OP: Washington eliminated waiting week in 2020, you'll get paid for week 1 if eligible, still need to file your weekly claim, and if you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone there are services like Claimyr that can help you connect with an agent.
