What is the waiting week for unemployment benefits in Washington?
I just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm trying to understand this waiting week thing. My friend mentioned something about not getting paid for the first week but I'm not sure if that's still a thing? I've been searching online but getting mixed information. Can someone explain how the waiting week works for unemployment in Washington state? Do I still need to file my weekly claim during that first week even if I won't get paid?

Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2020 due to COVID. You should get paid for your first week of unemployment as long as you're eligible and file your weekly claim on time.

•Oh really? That's great news! So I just need to make sure I file my weekly claim and I should get paid for that first week?

•Exactly! Just make sure you file by the deadline which is usually Sunday night by midnight for the week ending that Saturday.

yeah the waiting week is gone but you still gotta do your weekly claims or you won't get anything. don't skip any weeks or you'll have problems

The waiting week elimination is permanent in Washington. However, if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to verify your claim status or resolve any issues, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helps people connect with ESD agents by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helpful when you can't get through on your own.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days about my claim and keep getting busy signals.

•Yeah it's legitimate. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Interesting, might have to check that out if I run into issues with my claim.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this - Washington permanently eliminated the waiting week in March 2020. Before that, you had to wait one week before receiving benefits. Now you get paid starting from your first week of unemployment. This applies to regular unemployment insurance (UI) claims.

•Thanks for the clarification! I was confused because my dad mentioned having to wait when he was on unemployment years ago.

•Yeah, a lot of people still think the waiting week exists because it was around for so long. The change happened during the pandemic and stuck.

wait so if I filed 2 weeks ago but haven't gotten paid yet does that mean something's wrong with my claim?? I thought maybe it was the waiting week but if that's not a thing anymore...

•If you filed 2 weeks ago and haven't gotten paid, your claim might be in adjudication. Check your account on the Washington ESD website to see if there are any pending issues.

•I checked and it just says 'claim under review' but doesn't give me any details. This is so frustrating!

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr can help. When your claim is under review, talking to an actual ESD agent can help you understand what's needed to move it forward.

I'm glad Washington got rid of the waiting week. It was such a hardship for people who needed the money right away. One less barrier to getting help when you lose your job.

•Agreed! The waiting week never made sense to me. If you're unemployed, you need the money immediately.

•Some states still have it unfortunately. Washington did the right thing making it permanent.

For anyone new to this - even though there's no waiting week, you still need to serve any disqualification periods if you quit your job without good cause or were fired for misconduct. The waiting week elimination only applies to the automatic one-week waiting period that used to exist.

•Good point. I was disqualified for 7 weeks when I quit my last job and had to wait that out before getting benefits.

•Yeah, those are different things. The waiting week was just a general delay for everyone.

does anyone know if this applies to standby too? like if your employer puts you on temporary layoff?

Luca Bianchi
•Yes, standby claims also don't have a waiting week. You get paid from the first week you're on standby as long as you meet the other requirements.

•awesome, thanks! my employer said they might put us on standby for a few weeks so good to know

Just wanted to add that you should still file your weekly claim even if you think you might not be eligible for that week. It's better to file and let Washington ESD determine eligibility than to skip filing and potentially lose benefits.

•This is really important advice. I skipped a week once thinking I wasn't eligible and it caused issues with my claim.

•Good to know! I'll make sure to file every week regardless.

The elimination of the waiting week was one of the best changes Washington made. Having to wait a week when you just lost your job was cruel. At least now people can get help right away if they qualify.

•Totally agree. That first week after losing a job is already stressful enough without worrying about having no income.

•I remember the waiting week from when I was on unemployment in 2019. So glad they got rid of it.

One thing to remember is that even though there's no waiting week, it can still take time for your claim to be processed initially. Don't panic if you don't see payment immediately - it might just be taking time to verify your information.

•How long does the initial processing usually take?

Sofia Ramirez
•It varies, but usually within a week or two if there are no issues with your claim. If it's taking longer, there might be something that needs to be resolved.

•And if you need to talk to someone about delays, that's where services like Claimyr can help you actually get through to an agent instead of being stuck on hold forever.

Thanks everyone for the info! I was really confused about this waiting week thing. Sounds like I just need to keep filing my weekly claims and be patient while they process my initial claim.

•Exactly! Just stay consistent with your weekly filing and you should be fine.
