What is the waiting week for unemployment Washington ESD - do I still need to file?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about this waiting week thing. Do I still need to file my weekly claim during the waiting week? And when do I actually start getting paid? I've been out of work for 2 weeks already and really need to understand how this works. Some people are telling me different things about whether the waiting week still exists or not.

Yes, you still need to file your weekly claims during the waiting week. The waiting week is the first week of your claim that you're eligible for benefits but don't get paid for it. You have to keep filing every week to maintain your claim status.

•So I file but don't get paid for that first week? That seems backwards when I need the money most.

•I know it's frustrating, but that's how Washington ESD has always done it. Think of it as a one-week penalty that everyone has to serve.

Actually, Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2021 during COVID. You should get paid for your first eligible week now. Are you sure you're not thinking of the old rules?

•Really? I thought they only suspended it temporarily. Are you sure it's permanently gone?

•Pretty sure it was made permanent. Let me double check that though because I don't want to give wrong info.

•This is exactly the kind of confusion I'm dealing with! Can someone give me a definitive answer?

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for three days straight to get clarification on this exact question. Their phone lines are impossible to get through. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I used a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

•It worked for me. I was able to get through and verify my claim status within a few hours instead of spending days trying to call myself.

The waiting week was eliminated in Washington state. RCW 50.20.010 was amended to remove the one-week waiting period. You should be paid for your first eligible week of unemployment.

•Thank you! This is the kind of specific info I needed. So I should expect payment for my first week?

•Wow, I had no idea they changed this. Thanks for the correction and the statute reference.

wait so theres no waiting week anymore? when did this happen because i swear i had to do a waiting week like 2 years ago

•The change was made permanent in 2021. If you filed a claim 2 years ago, you would have been subject to the waiting week that was still in effect then.

•that makes sense, glad they got rid of it because that was really frustrating

So just to confirm - I file my weekly claims starting with week 1, and I should get paid for week 1? There's no unpaid waiting week anymore in Washington?

Ana Rusula
•Correct. As long as you're eligible for benefits that week, you should receive payment. The waiting week requirement was eliminated.

•Yep, that's right. Much better system now.

This is so confusing because my friend in Oregon still has to do a waiting week. I guess it varies by state?

Ana Rusula
•Yes, unemployment laws vary significantly by state. Washington eliminated the waiting week, but other states may still have it.

•Good to know Washington is more progressive about this stuff

I'm still confused about the timing though. If I file my claim on a Tuesday, when do I file my first weekly claim?
0 coins
Kai Santiago
•Weekly claims are filed for the previous week. So if you file your initial claim on Tuesday, you'd file your first weekly claim the following Sunday for the week that just ended.

Xan Dae
•Got it, so there's still a timing aspect to figure out even without the waiting week

The Washington ESD website should have updated info about this. Have you checked there?

•I looked but their website is honestly pretty confusing. I found conflicting information which is why I posted here.

I had a similar question last month and actually got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. The rep confirmed that there's no waiting week anymore and walked me through the whole process.

•That's helpful to know. I might try that service if I need to call about anything else.

just want to add that even though theres no waiting week you still have to meet all the other requirements like job search and being able and available to work

Carmella Popescu
•Right, I understand that part. Just wanted to make sure about the payment timing.

•cool just making sure because some people think no waiting week means no requirements at all

Does anyone know if this applies to standby status too? Or just regular unemployment claims?

•The elimination of the waiting week applies to all unemployment benefits in Washington, including standby status.

I remember when they first eliminated the waiting week during COVID, I thought it was just temporary. Glad they made it permanent because that waiting week was really hard when you're already struggling financially.

Lim Wong
•Exactly! It never made sense to me to withhold benefits when people need them most.

Aidan Percy
•Yeah, especially since you're already dealing with the stress of losing your job

So to summarize for anyone else reading this: No waiting week in Washington state anymore, file your weekly claims starting with week 1, and you should get paid for that first eligible week. Just make sure you meet all the other requirements.

One thing to keep in mind is that even though there's no waiting week, there can still be delays in processing your claim. Don't panic if you don't see payment immediately.

Carmella Popescu
•Good point. How long should I expect to wait for my first payment?
0 coins
Norman Fraser
•Usually within a few business days of filing your weekly claim, but it can vary depending on if there are any issues with your claim.

The fact that people are still confused about this shows how poorly Washington ESD communicates changes. They should have made this clearer on their website and in their communications.

Fiona Gallagher
•Agreed. Their communication has always been pretty terrible.

Bottom line: Washington state eliminated the waiting week permanently. File your weekly claims and you should get paid for your first eligible week. If you need to talk to Washington ESD and can't get through, there are services like Claimyr that can help.
