Washington ESD unemployment waiting week - still required in 2025?
I'm filing my first unemployment claim and keep seeing references to a 'waiting week' but I'm confused about what this actually means. Do I still have to wait a full week before getting any benefits? My last job ended two weeks ago and I really need to know if Washington ESD is going to make me wait even longer before I see any money. I've been searching online but getting mixed information about whether the waiting week is still a thing or if it was eliminated during COVID. Can someone explain what the unemployment waiting week actually is and if I need to plan for it?

The waiting week was actually eliminated in Washington back in 2021! You don't have to serve an unpaid waiting week anymore. As long as your claim is approved and you meet all the weekly requirements, you should get paid for your first eligible week. Just make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time.

•Oh thank goodness! I was really worried about having to wait another week without any income. So I should expect payment for the first week I file if everything goes through?

•Exactly! Just remember you still need to complete your job search requirements and be available for work. The elimination of the waiting week was one of the good changes that stuck around after the pandemic.

wait really?? I could have sworn there was still a waiting week when I filed last year. Maybe I'm thinking of something else but I remember not getting paid for my first week

•You might be thinking of the time it takes for your claim to process, or maybe you had an issue with your first weekly claim. The actual waiting week requirement was definitely eliminated.

•oh that makes sense, my claim did take forever to get approved so maybe that's what I'm remembering

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I was confused about this same thing. Spent hours on hold trying to talk to someone who could explain it clearly. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made the whole process so much easier.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money and don't want to pay for something I can eventually do myself.

•It's worth it when you really need to talk to someone and can't get through. Way less stressful than calling 200 times a day and getting hung up on.

The waiting week elimination was part of SB 5061 if you want to look it up. It was originally a temporary COVID measure but became permanent in 2021. Before that, claimants had to serve one unpaid week before receiving benefits, which was really hard on people who needed immediate help.

•Thanks for the specific info! It's good to know the exact law behind it. I'm glad they made it permanent.

•I remember those days, having to wait that extra week was brutal when you're already struggling

Just be prepared that even without the waiting week, it can still take time for your claim to process, especially if it goes into adjudication. Mine took 3 weeks to get approved because they had to verify my separation reason.

•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that happening to my claim?

•Adjudication is when they need to investigate something about your claim - like if your employer contests it or if there's a question about why you left your job. It's not necessarily bad, just means extra review time.

•Exactly. Common reasons for adjudication include job separation issues, availability questions, or if you have wages from multiple states. Just be patient if it happens.

I filed in January and got my first payment within 2 weeks, no waiting week needed. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is processing. Don't skip any weeks!

•Good to know! I'll make sure to keep filing weekly even if I haven't heard back about my initial claim yet.

•Yes, and keep track of your job search activities from day one. You need to log 3 job search activities per week in WorkSourceWA.

The Washington ESD website is pretty clear about this now, but it used to be confusing. They updated their FAQ section to specifically address the waiting week question since so many people were asking about it.

•Yeah their website is much better than it used to be. Still not perfect but at least you can find basic info now.

Does anyone know if the waiting week thing varies by state? I have a friend in another state who said they still have to do it.

•Yes, unemployment rules vary by state. Some states still have waiting weeks, others eliminated them temporarily or permanently. Washington eliminated ours permanently in 2021.

•That makes sense. I'm glad Washington got rid of it - seems like an unnecessary hardship when people are already struggling.

I'm still confused about something - if there's no waiting week, why did my neighbor say she didn't get paid for her first week? She filed in December.

•There could be several reasons: her claim might have been denied initially, she might have had a separation issue, or she might have made an error on her weekly claim. The waiting week elimination doesn't mean everyone automatically gets paid - you still have to meet all eligibility requirements.

•Ah okay, that makes more sense. So many rules to keep track of!

Just want to emphasize what others have said - file your weekly claims religiously, even if your initial claim is still processing. I made the mistake of not filing for two weeks while waiting for approval and lost those weeks forever.

Mei Zhang
•Oh no! So you can't get back pay for weeks you didn't file?

Connor Byrne
•Nope, if you don't file a weekly claim for a specific week, you generally can't get benefits for that week later. There might be some exceptions for good cause, but it's risky.

The whole system is still confusing even without the waiting week. I spent so much time trying to understand all the requirements and deadlines. When I finally got frustrated enough, I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was honestly a lifesaver. Got connected to an actual Washington ESD person who explained everything clearly.

•I'm starting to think that might be worth it. I've been calling for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

•Same thing happened to me! The regular phone system is just overwhelmed. At least with Claimyr I knew I'd actually talk to someone.

For anyone reading this thread later - here's the key points: 1) No waiting week in Washington since 2021, 2) File weekly claims immediately and consistently, 3) Meet job search requirements, 4) Be patient if your claim goes to adjudication. The system isn't perfect but it's better than it used to be.

•Perfect summary, thank you! This thread has been super helpful for understanding what to expect.

•Agreed, wish I had found info this clear when I was filing my claim last year!

One thing to add - even though there's no waiting week, your first payment might still be delayed if you file your initial claim late in the week. Washington ESD processes claims on specific schedules, so timing can affect when you see your first payment.

•I filed mine on a Wednesday, does that make a difference?

•You should be fine filing mid-week. The main thing is just getting it in as soon as possible after your last day of work.

This is such a relief to read! I was dreading having to wait an extra week without pay. Thanks everyone for the clear explanations - this community is so helpful for navigating all the Washington ESD stuff.

Just wanted to share my recent experience since I filed a claim last month - the no waiting week thing is definitely real! I got my first payment exactly 7 days after filing my weekly claim, once my initial application was approved. The whole process was way smoother than I expected based on horror stories I'd heard. My advice is to have all your employment history and documentation ready when you file, and don't panic if it takes a few days to hear back. The system really has improved from what it used to be.
