How many waiting weeks for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about waiting weeks. Some people are telling me there's a one week waiting period before benefits start, but others say there's no waiting week anymore. Can someone clarify how many waiting weeks I need to serve before getting my first payment? I really need to know so I can plan my finances accordingly.

Washington eliminated the waiting week requirement back in 2019. You should be eligible for benefits starting from your first week of unemployment as long as your claim is approved and you meet all the requirements.

•That's a relief! So I don't have to wait an extra week without any income?

•Correct, no waiting week in Washington state. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time.

yeah no waiting week but it still takes forever to actually get your first payment lol mine took 3 weeks because of some verification issue

•3 weeks?? What kind of verification issue did you have?

•they wanted to verify my identity or something, had to send in documents and wait for them to process it

While there's no statutory waiting week in Washington, processing delays can create an effective waiting period. If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. They have a system that helps you reach ESD representatives without the usual phone hassles. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of this service before. Is it legitimate? I'm nervous about giving my info to third parties.

•I was skeptical too but desperate after getting disconnected from ESD 15 times in one day. It worked perfectly and I finally got my adjudication issue resolved.

•Interesting, might have to try this if my claim gets stuck in adjudication again.

The no waiting week policy has been in effect since July 2019 under RCW 50.20.010. However, you still need to serve any disqualification periods if you quit without good cause or were terminated for misconduct. Those are separate from the waiting week concept.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so I should be good on that front.

•Layoffs typically qualify for benefits without disqualification periods, assuming you meet the base period earnings requirements.

WAIT A MINUTE - I could have sworn there was still a waiting week when I filed last year! Are you sure about this? Because I definitely didn't get paid for my first week!

•You might be thinking of the processing time or a disqualification period. The actual waiting week requirement was eliminated in 2019.

•Maybe I'm confusing it with my friend who lives in Oregon or something. Thanks for clarifying!

•Different states have different rules - some still have waiting weeks but Washington doesn't.

btw make sure you do your job search activities even for that first week, they still require the job contacts

Javier Morales
•How many job contacts do I need per week?

Connor O'Brien
•its 3 job search activities per week, can be applications, interviews, networking events, etc

Just want to add that even though there's no waiting week, you still won't get paid until your claim is actually approved. Mine was stuck in adjudication for 2 weeks because they had to verify my separation reason with my employer.

•How did you find out it was in adjudication? Did they notify you?

•It shows up in your eServices account under claim status. You can also call to check but good luck getting through.

I remember when they eliminated the waiting week - it was a huge relief for people who were already struggling financially. Every week counts when you're unemployed.

Javier Morales
•Absolutely, one week can make the difference between making rent or not.

•Exactly why the policy change was so important. Washington was one of the better states for recognizing this.

Pro tip: even though there's no waiting week, file your weekly claim for that first week anyway. Some people skip it thinking they won't get paid, but you need to establish the pattern of filing.

•Good point, I'll make sure to file starting from week one.

•Yeah, consistency is key with the weekly claims. Miss one and it can mess up your whole benefit year.

Does anyone know if the elimination of the waiting week applies to all types of unemployment benefits? Like what about standby benefits?

Hiroshi Nakamura
•The waiting week elimination applies to regular UI benefits. Standby has its own rules since it's for temporary layoffs with expected recall dates.

Ravi Patel
•Thanks, I wasn't sure if standby followed the same rules as regular unemployment.

i filed 2 weeks ago and still haven't gotten any money, how long does it usually take after approval?
0 coins
Natasha Petrov
•Payments typically process within 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues.

•maybe i should check if my claim is actually approved then, thought it went through automatically

•Definitely check your claim status in eServices. If you can't get through to ESD by phone, Claimyr might help you reach an agent to verify everything is processed correctly.

The waiting week thing confused me too when I first filed. I kept expecting to have an unpaid week but never did. Washington's system is actually pretty decent compared to other states I've heard about.

•That's reassuring to hear. This whole process is stressful enough without extra complications.

PixelPrincess
•Totally understand the stress. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements and you should be fine.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your profile! I had to wait an extra week for my first payment because I had an old bank account on file.

•Good reminder, I'll double-check that information right now.

•Yeah, learned that lesson the hard way. Also make sure your address is current for any mail they might send.

Wait, so if I was unemployed for 2 weeks before I filed my claim, do I get benefits for those 2 weeks or only from when I filed?
0 coins
Hiroshi Nakamura
•You can only receive benefits from the Sunday of the week you filed your claim, not for previous weeks of unemployment. That's why it's important to file as soon as you become unemployed.

Chloe Martin
•Ugh, wish I had known that sooner. Lost out on 2 weeks of benefits because I waited to file.

The key thing to remember is that Washington's elimination of the waiting week only applies to the first compensable week of your benefit year. If you have multiple periods of unemployment in the same benefit year, there's no additional waiting period for subsequent claims.

Javier Morales
•That's good to know for future reference, hopefully I won't need to file again anytime soon.

Diego Fernández
•Hopefully not, but it's useful information to have just in case your employment situation changes again.

Does this no waiting week thing apply if you're filing after being on workers comp? My situation is a bit complicated.

Hiroshi Nakamura
•Workers' comp to unemployment transitions can be complex. You might want to speak directly with an ESD representative about your specific situation.

•Yeah, probably need to call them. Might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned if I can't get through the normal way.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Sounds like I should be getting my first payment soon as long as my claim processes without issues.

Natasha Petrov
•You're welcome! Just remember to keep filing those weekly claims even if your payment seems delayed.

•Will do, and I'll make sure to keep up with the job search requirements too.

One more thing - if you do run into any issues with your claim, don't give up. The system isn't perfect but persistence usually pays off. And there are resources like Claimyr to help you actually reach someone when you need assistance.
