Washington ESD waiting week for unemployment - when do benefits actually start?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm seeing something about a 'waiting week' in my account. Does this mean I won't get paid for my first week even though I'm eligible? I'm really struggling financially and was counting on that first payment. Can someone explain how this waiting week thing works and when I'll actually see money?

Yes, Washington has a waiting week requirement. You have to serve one unpaid waiting week before you start receiving benefits. So your first payable week will be your second week of unemployment. It's frustrating but that's how the system works.

•That's rough. So even if I file my weekly claims on time, I won't get anything for the first week?

Ella Cofer
•Exactly. You still need to file that first weekly claim to establish your waiting week, but you won't receive payment for it.

The waiting week is basically Washington ESD's way of making sure you're actually unemployed and not just taking a quick break between jobs. It's annoying when you need the money right away.

•I hate this policy. When you lose your job you need help immediately, not after jumping through hoops for a week.

•I get the frustration but it's been this way for years. At least Washington still pays decent weekly benefit amounts compared to some states.

Had this same confusion when I first filed. The waiting week is unpaid but you do need to complete all the requirements - file your weekly claim, do job searches, etc. Don't skip it or it could mess up your whole claim.

•Good to know, thanks. I was wondering if I needed to do the job search stuff during the waiting week too.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for days to ask about my waiting week status and whether it's been satisfied. Their phone lines are impossible! Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. I'm getting desperate to talk to someone about my claim status.

Wait, I thought if you worked part-time during your waiting week it could extend it? I'm so confused about all these rules.

•If you work and earn more than your weekly benefit amount during the waiting week, yes, you'd need to serve another waiting week. But small earnings usually just reduce your benefit payment.

•This is so complicated. Why can't they just make it simple?

The waiting week applies to regular unemployment insurance (UI) claims. If you're on standby status through your union, the rules might be different. Always worth checking your specific situation with Washington ESD.

•I'm not on standby, just regular unemployment after getting laid off. Sounds like I'm stuck with the waiting week.

This waiting week policy is just another way for the state to save money on unemployment benefits. It's totally unfair to people who are already struggling financially.

•I mean, I get your frustration, but most states have some version of this. At least Washington's benefits are pretty decent once you start getting them.

•Still doesn't make it right. When you lose your job you need help immediately, not after proving you're 'worthy' for a week.

•How long did it take for your first payment to show up after you completed the waiting week?

•think it was like 3-4 days after i filed my second weekly claim

One important thing - make sure you're filing your weekly claims correctly during and after your waiting week. Any mistakes can delay your benefits even more. The Washington ESD website has guides on how to properly report work and earnings.

•Thanks for the tip. I'll make sure to read through everything carefully before submitting.

Does anyone know if the waiting week gets waived during emergencies or disasters? I remember hearing something about that during COVID but not sure if it still applies.

•The waiting week was temporarily waived during the pandemic but that's over now. It's back to the standard one-week waiting period for all new claims.

•Figured as much. Was hoping maybe they'd kept some of the more helpful changes permanent.

Update: I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent today! They confirmed my waiting week was properly served and my benefits should start next week. Game changer!

•Awesome! Glad it worked out for you. That service really does save time compared to trying to call on your own.

•That's great to hear. I might need to try that if I run into issues with my claim.

I remember being so stressed about money during my waiting week. It helps to know exactly when to expect your first payment so you can plan accordingly. Usually it's about 5-7 days after you file your second weekly claim.

•That timeline helps a lot, thank you. At least I can plan around that.

One thing that caught me off guard - you still need to be actively looking for work during your waiting week and keep track of your job search activities. Don't slack off just because you're not getting paid yet.

•Good point. I almost made that mistake thinking the waiting week was just a free pass.

Ella Cofer
•Exactly. All the regular requirements apply during the waiting week. Job search, availability, reporting any work - everything.

The waiting week was the worst part of my whole unemployment experience. Just knowing you're eligible but can't get help for another week when bills are due is awful.

•Totally agree. It's like they're punishing you for losing your job in the first place.

For anyone reading this thread later - the key things about Washington's waiting week: 1) It's unpaid but required, 2) You still file weekly claims and do job searches, 3) Your first payment comes after completing it, 4) Work earnings during waiting week can extend it if too high.

•Perfect summary, thanks! This thread has been super helpful for understanding what to expect.

•Ha! I think we've all been there. The unemployment system isn't exactly user-friendly when it comes to explaining these things upfront.

I had a situation where my employer contested my claim right after my waiting week ended. Even though I eventually won the appeal, it delayed everything by months. Make sure your separation reason is solid before you even start the waiting week.

•Yikes, that sounds awful. My layoff was pretty straightforward so hopefully I won't have those issues.

Saleem Vaziri
•Yeah, you should be fine with a layoff. It's more the people who quit or got fired that need to worry about employer contests.

The waiting week is just one of those things you have to get through. Focus on using that time productively - update your resume, start networking, get your job search strategy ready. Makes the time feel less wasted.

•That's actually really good advice. Might as well use the time to get organized for the job hunt.

Does the waiting week reset if you get a job and then lose it again later? Or is it once per benefit year?
0 coins
Ella Cofer
•It's generally once per benefit year, but if you start a completely new claim in a different benefit year, you'd have to serve another waiting week. Depends on timing and circumstances.

•Makes sense. Hopefully won't need to find out firsthand anytime soon!

Just want to add - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about waiting week questions or any other issues, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really works. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent when I'd been trying for days on my own.
