Will I get paid for my waiting week on unemployment benefits in Washington?
I just filed my first weekly claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about the waiting week. My claim shows approved but zero payment for the first week. I've been reading conflicting information online - some sites say Washington has no waiting week, others mention it was eliminated. Will I eventually get paid for this first week or is it just gone forever? I really need that money since I've been out of work for three weeks already.

Washington State eliminated the waiting week back in 2020. You should get paid for every week you're eligible, including your first week. If your claim shows approved but zero payment, there might be an issue with your weekly claim certification. Did you answer all the questions correctly about being able and available for work?

•I thought I answered everything right. I marked yes for able and available, and no for refusing work or being in school. Maybe I should call and check?

•Definitely call. Sometimes there are technical glitches or verification issues that can delay first payments even when the claim is approved.

I had the same thing happen last month. Turns out my ID verification was still pending even though my claim said approved. Took forever to get through to someone at Washington ESD to figure it out.

•How long did it take you to get through on the phone? I've been trying for days.

•Honestly, I gave up on calling after a week of busy signals and used this service called Claimyr that gets you through to an actual ESD agent. Found it at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Got connected within an hour.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Did it actually work?

Just to clarify - Washington State does NOT have a waiting week as of July 2020. Every eligible week should result in payment. If you're seeing zero dollars for your first week, check your SecureAccess Washington account for any outstanding issues or required documents. Also verify your direct deposit information is correct.

•This is correct. I work with unemployed folks regularly and the waiting week was eliminated. OP should definitely investigate why the payment is zero.

•Thank you! My direct deposit info looks right. I'll check for any hidden issues in my account.

Wait, are you sure about that? I swear my brother had to wait a week when he filed last year...

•Your brother might have had a different issue - like ID verification or an employer protest - that delayed his first payment. But there's no waiting week requirement in Washington anymore.

•Oh that makes sense, he did mention something about his old job contesting it initially.

I'm going through something similar but my issue was that I didn't realize I needed to file my weekly claim within the specific timeframe. Make sure you're filing your claims on time - I think you have until the following Saturday but don't quote me on that.

Lauren Wood
•Close - you can file your weekly claim from Sunday through Saturday of each week. Late filing can sometimes cause payment delays.

•I filed mine on Monday so timing shouldn't be an issue. Still stumped about the zero payment.

UGH the Washington ESD system is so confusing!! I've been dealing with this for months and every time I think I understand something, another issue pops up. Why can't they just make this stuff clearer?

•I totally get the frustration. That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - got tired of the runaround and just needed answers from an actual person.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly getting my payment issues resolved quickly was worth it for me.

Check if there's a hold on your account for work search requirements. Even though your claim is approved, if you haven't completed your job search activities correctly it can affect payments.

•I thought work search didn't start until after your second week? Or did that change?

Kiara Fisherman
•It starts right away now. You need 3 job search activities per week and they have to be documented in WorkSourceWA.

same thing happened to me but it was because my employer hadn't responded to the separation notice yet. even though my claim was approved the payment was held up

Dylan Baskin
•How do I check if my employer responded? Is that somewhere in my account?

Liam Cortez
•should be under correspondence or notices in your esd account. might show as pending employer response or something like that

Actually, let me add one more possibility - if this is a new claim and you just filed it, sometimes the first payment takes an extra processing cycle even when everything is correct. The system processes payments in batches and new claims sometimes get caught in the next cycle.

•That would make sense. How long should I wait before panicking?

•I'd give it until Wednesday of next week. If you still don't see the payment processed by then, definitely call or use that Claimyr service someone mentioned.

FYI everyone - I used Claimyr a few weeks ago when I was having adjudication issues and it was legit. Got through to someone at ESD same day and got my problem sorted out. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual human instead of playing phone tag.

•OK you've convinced me to at least check it out. Getting real tired of the busy signals.

•Is it safe though? Seems weird to use a third party service for government stuff.

•They don't ask for your personal info or login details. They just help you get connected to the ESD phone system. Watch their demo video to see how it works.

Double-check that your weekly claim didn't get flagged for some reason. Sometimes if you answer the questions inconsistently from week to week it can trigger a review that holds up payment.

Dylan Baskin
•This was my very first weekly claim so there shouldn't be any inconsistencies yet.

Makayla Shoemaker
•Then it's probably just a processing delay or verification issue. Definitely worth calling to check.

I know someone mentioned ID verification but also check if you need to submit additional documentation. Sometimes Washington ESD asks for proof of income or employment records that can hold up payments even on approved claims.

•Where would I see if they need additional documents?

•Check your correspondence inbox and also the 'Required Actions' section if there is one. Sometimes it's not super obvious.

Just want to confirm what others said - no waiting week in Washington! I filed in December and got paid for every single week including the first one. Something else is going on with your claim.

Dylan Baskin
•Thanks for confirming. I'll definitely investigate further rather than just assuming it's a waiting week.

Pro tip: if you do end up calling Washington ESD, call right when they open at 8am or during lunch time around 12-1pm. Those seem to be the best times to actually get through.

Dylan Baskin
•Good to know! I'll try the lunch time slot tomorrow.

•Or just skip the hassle entirely and use Claimyr. Saved me hours of calling attempts.

Make sure you're not confusing this with the old federal extended benefits that had waiting periods. Regular Washington unemployment has no waiting week and hasn't for years now.

Dylan Baskin
•Nope, this is just regular unemployment. I was laid off from my restaurant job last month.

UPDATE: I just checked my account again and there's actually a notice I missed saying they need to verify my identity before releasing payments. So it wasn't a waiting week issue at all!

Lauren Wood
•There we go! ID verification is super common right now. You'll need to submit documents through ID.me or whatever system they're using now.

Dylan Baskin
•Wait, that update wasn't from me - I'm still the original poster and I haven't found any ID verification requests yet.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to check my account thoroughly for any hidden notices or required actions, and if I can't figure it out I'll either try calling during lunch or check out that Claimyr service. Really appreciate knowing there's no waiting week so I know something is actually wrong.
