Is there a waiting week for unemployment in Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm confused about whether there's still a waiting week. I've heard conflicting information - some people say there used to be one but it was eliminated, others say it still exists. My claim shows as approved but I haven't received any payment yet. Is this normal or should I be worried? I really need to understand what to expect for timing.

Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2020. You should get paid for your first week if you're eligible. The delay you're seeing is probably just processing time - it usually takes a few days after your weekly claim is filed for payment to hit your account.

•That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait an extra week without any income. How long does processing usually take?

•Usually 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues with your claim.

Yeah no waiting week anymore thank god. But make sure you filed your weekly claim correctly - if you made any mistakes it could delay everything. Also check if your claim is in adjudication, that would explain the delay.

•How would I know if it's in adjudication? My account just shows 'claim approved' but no payment details yet.

•Log into your eServices account and check the status. If it says anything about 'pending determination' or 'adjudication' then that's your issue.

I had the same confusion when I filed! The waiting week thing is old information that still floats around online. Washington ESD eliminated it during COVID and never brought it back. You should definitely get paid for that first week as long as you meet all the other requirements.

•What other requirements? I thought if your claim was approved you just get paid automatically.

•You still need to do your job search activities, be available for work, report any income, stuff like that. The usual UI requirements.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on this, I found Claimyr really helpful - it's a service that calls them for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before, is it legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah it's totally legit, I used it twice when I had issues with my claim. They just handle the calling part so you don't waste your day on hold.

•That sounds amazing, I've been dreading having to call if something goes wrong. How quickly do they get you connected?

•Usually within a few hours depending on how busy Washington ESD is that day. Much better than the lottery of trying to get through yourself.

Correct, Washington State eliminated the waiting week permanently in July 2020. You are entitled to benefits for your first week of unemployment if you are otherwise eligible. The processing delay you're experiencing is normal - first-time claims often take 3-5 business days to process the initial payment even after approval.

•Is that from when you first file the claim or from when you file your first weekly claim?

Brandon Parker
•From when you file your first weekly claim after your initial claim is approved. The weekly claims trigger the actual payments.

wait so we get paid for every week we're unemployed? even the very first one? that seems different from what my dad told me about when he was on unemployment years ago

•Your dad was probably on unemployment before 2020 when there was still a waiting week. The rules changed during the pandemic.

Just want to confirm what others said - no waiting week in Washington. BUT make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time every week. If you miss the deadline for filing your weekly claim, you could lose that week's benefits even though there's no waiting week anymore.

•When is the deadline? I want to make sure I don't mess this up.

•You have to file by 11:59 PM on Saturday for the week ending that Saturday. Don't wait until the last minute though.

•I thought you could file late and just explain why? Or am I thinking of something else?

•You can try to file late with good cause but it's not guaranteed they'll accept it. Better to just file on time.

The whole system is confusing honestly. I wish they would update their website to make it clearer about the waiting week thing being gone. I spent like an hour trying to figure this out when I first filed.

•Agreed, there's so much outdated info floating around. Even some of the FAQ pages seem like they haven't been updated.

Has anyone had issues with their first payment being less than expected? Mine came through but it was like $50 less than what the benefit calculator showed.

Brandon Parker
•That could be taxes being withheld if you elected to have them taken out, or it could be an offset for something like child support. Check your payment details in eServices.

•Oh right, I did elect to have taxes taken out. That's probably it, thanks!

Just to add another data point - I filed three weeks ago and got my first payment exactly 4 business days after filing my first weekly claim. No waiting week, everything worked as expected. The system actually works pretty smoothly once you understand the process.

•That's encouraging to hear! I'm hoping mine goes just as smoothly.

Make sure you set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting the debit card takes longer and then you have to deal with ATM fees and stuff. Direct deposit is much faster and more convenient.

•I did set up direct deposit when I filed. Is there anything else I should do to make sure payments go smoothly?

•Just keep filing your weekly claims on time and keep track of your job search activities. As long as you do that you should be fine.

I remember being so confused about this too! The waiting week elimination was one of the good changes that came out of the pandemic response. Makes a huge difference when you're already stressed about losing your job.

•Seriously, that first week of income makes such a difference when you're already worried about bills and rent.

FYI if anyone runs into problems getting answers from Washington ESD, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but used it when I had a payment issue and they got me through to someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Saved me hours of calling.

•How much does it cost? Is it worth it for minor questions or just for serious problems?

•I think it's reasonable for what you get - not having to waste your whole day on hold is worth it to me. I'd use it for anything where you actually need to talk to a human.

The key thing to remember is that Washington eliminated the waiting week but you still need to file that first weekly claim to trigger your payment. Don't just assume money will show up automatically after your claim is approved.

•Yes, I made sure to file my weekly claim right away. Hoping to see that payment in the next day or two!

•You should be all set then. Just keep doing everything by the book and you shouldn't have any issues.

This thread has been super helpful! I was about to call Washington ESD about the same question but now I know what to expect. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.
