Do you get paid for waiting week unemployment Washington ESD - still confused about this
I'm really confused about the waiting week thing with Washington ESD unemployment. I filed my claim 2 weeks ago and just completed my second weekly claim yesterday. My first week shows 'paid' but $0 and my second week is still pending. Everyone keeps talking about a 'waiting week' but I don't really understand what that means. Do you eventually get paid for that first week or is it just lost money? I'm trying to figure out my budget and need to know if that first week will ever show up as actual payment. Can someone explain this in simple terms?

yeah the waiting week is confusing at first but you dont get paid for it ever, its just how the system works

•Wait so that's just $400+ that I'll never see? That doesn't seem right

•That's correct - the waiting week is unpaid. It's Washington state law, not just a Washington ESD policy decision.

The waiting week in Washington is your first compensable week that you file for unemployment benefits. You complete the weekly claim certification but receive $0 in benefits for that week. This is required by Washington state statute and serves as a one-week penalty period. You will never receive payment for this week - it's permanently unpaid.

•So basically I lose a week of benefits no matter what? Even if I did everything right?

Keisha Williams
•Exactly. Even if your claim is perfect, you still have the unpaid waiting week. It's not based on your actions.

•This is so frustrating when you're already financially stressed from losing your job

I had the same confusion when I filed last year. Spent forever trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about it. Finally used a service called Claimyr that gets you through to agents faster - they confirmed the waiting week is never paid. The website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that service, does it actually work or is it a scam?

•It's legit, they just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it actually connected me to a real Washington ESD agent.

•I've used similar services before for other agencies. They're usually worth it when you can't get through normally.

This is such BS that they take away a whole week of benefits when people are already struggling financially. Like why do they need to punish people for losing their jobs??

•I think it's supposed to discourage people from filing for unemployment unless they really need it
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
•Well that's stupid because people who file for unemployment DO really need it

•The waiting week has been part of Washington unemployment law for decades. It's not unique to our state either.

To clarify the timeline: Week 1 = waiting week (you file, get approved for $0), Week 2 = first payable week (assuming no issues), Week 3 = second payable week, etc. Your benefit year is still 52 weeks total, you just get paid for 51 of them due to the waiting week requirement.

Yara Abboud
•Okay that makes more sense. So I still get the full benefit amount over the year, just spread over 51 weeks instead of 52?
0 coins
Natasha Ivanova
•No, you actually get one less week of benefits total. If your weekly benefit is $400, you lose that $400 permanently.

•Ugh that's even worse than I thought

does anyone know if there are exceptions to the waiting week? like if you get laid off vs fired?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•No exceptions. Everyone has to serve the waiting week regardless of why they became unemployed.

•Even if you're on standby from your employer you still have the waiting week

I remember being so confused about this too. The Washington ESD website isn't super clear about it. Had to call like 50 times before getting through to someone who could explain it properly.

•The phone system is brutal. I gave up trying to call after a week of busy signals
0 coins
Amina Sy
•That's exactly why I ended up trying Claimyr - the regular phone system was impossible

Oliver Fischer
•Yeah I should have looked for something like that. Would have saved me so much frustration

wait so if I file today, when would I actually get my first payment?
0 coins
Natasha Ivanova
•Depends on if your claim needs adjudication. If it's straightforward: file today (week 1), file weekly claim next week (week 2), first payment comes week 3.

NebulaNomad
•Three weeks before any money? That's rough when you're already unemployed

Keisha Williams
•And that's assuming no delays. Adjudication can add weeks or months to the process.

I've been on standby unemployment for 6 months and still had to do the waiting week when I first filed. It's just part of the system unfortunately.

•What's standby unemployment? Is that different from regular UI?
0 coins
Javier Garcia
•Standby is when your employer expects to recall you within a certain timeframe, but you still get unemployment benefits while waiting
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•Correct, and standby claims still have the same waiting week requirement as regular unemployment claims.

This whole thread is making me realize I need to budget better. I was counting on getting paid for that first week

•It's a common mistake. The waiting week catches a lot of people off guard financially.

•Seriously check out Claimyr if you need to talk to someone. It's the only way I've been able to get through consistently when I have questions.

•Is it expensive? I'm already tight on money

•I think it's worth it when you consider how much time you save vs calling repeatedly. Plus they actually get you to a real person.

The worst part is that the waiting week applies even if there are delays processing your claim. So you could wait a month for adjudication and STILL lose that first week when you finally get approved.

Yara Abboud
•Wait what? So even if Washington ESD takes forever to process my claim, I still don't get paid for week 1?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•That's correct. The waiting week is based on when you file, not when you get approved.

•This system is so messed up

Thanks for explaining this everyone. I was getting really worried that there was something wrong with my claim when I saw $0 for the first week.

Keisha Williams
•Very common confusion. As long as your claim shows 'paid' status, even with $0, that's normal for the waiting week.
0 coins
Yara Abboud
•Yeah that's exactly what mine shows too. Good to know it's working correctly.

I wish they would just call it something else instead of 'waiting week' because it makes it sound like you're waiting for something to happen

•right? like 'unpaid week' would be more accurate

•Or 'penalty week' since that's basically what it is

Does the waiting week count toward your total benefit year? Like if I'm eligible for 26 weeks of benefits, is it really only 25 weeks of payments?
0 coins
Natasha Ivanova
•The waiting week counts as one of your 26 weeks, so yes, you only get paid for 25 weeks maximum.
0 coins
Omar Fawzi
•That's so frustrating. You lose benefits both ways.
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•Exactly. It reduces both your weekly count and your total benefit amount.

my claim has been in adjudication for 3 weeks, when I finally get approved will I still have to serve the waiting week?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•Yes, the waiting week applies regardless of adjudication delays. Your first compensable week will still be unpaid.

Chloe Wilson
•That's ridiculous. So I'm being punished twice - once for the delay and once for the waiting week

•I was in adjudication for 2 months and still had to do the waiting week. It really does add insult to injury.

•This is another situation where Claimyr helped me - I was able to get status updates during my adjudication instead of just waiting in the dark.

can you appeal the waiting week requirement or is it just set in stone?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•It's Washington state law, so there's no appealing it. Every unemployment claim has the waiting week requirement.

At least now I know what to expect. Going to have to make my savings stretch an extra week while I wait for benefits to actually start.
