How do I claim my waiting week for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I've been filing weekly claims for about 6 weeks now and my benefits have been paying out normally. But I just realized I never got paid for my very first week - the waiting week. I thought Washington ESD was supposed to automatically pay that out after I completed a certain number of weeks? Do I need to do something special to claim my waiting week or should it have happened automatically? I'm confused about how this works.

The waiting week gets paid automatically after you've received benefits for 4 consecutive weeks. You don't need to file anything special for it. If you've been getting paid for 6 weeks total, you should have received your waiting week payment by now. Check your payment history in your Washington ESD account to see if it's listed there.

•I've checked my payment history multiple times and I only see payments for weeks 2-6. Week 1 just shows 'waiting week - no payment due' or something like that.

•That's weird, mine showed up automatically after week 4. Maybe there's a glitch in the system?

You should definitely have your waiting week paid by now if you've been receiving benefits consistently. Sometimes there are delays or technical issues that prevent the automatic payment. I'd recommend calling Washington ESD to check on this - they can manually process the waiting week payment if there's been an error.

•I've tried calling Washington ESD multiple times but can never get through. The phone lines are always busy and I either get disconnected or sit on hold for hours.

•Same here! I've been trying to reach them for weeks about a different issue. The hold times are absolutely ridiculous.

If you can't get through by phone, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to Washington ESD agents without sitting on hold for hours. They have a system that calls for you and connects you when an agent becomes available. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•Yeah it's real. I used it last month when I had an adjudication issue. They don't post prices on the site but it was worth it to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of wasting entire days calling.

•I might have to try this. I'm getting desperate to get this waiting week issue resolved.

Before you pay for a service, make sure you've checked everything in your account. Sometimes the waiting week payment gets processed but shows up in a different section or gets deposited to a different account if your direct deposit info changed.

•Good point. I'll double check my bank statements and make sure my direct deposit info is correct in the system.

•Also check if there are any 'pending' payments in your account that might not have been released yet.

this happened to me too!! took forever to get it sorted out. washington esd said there was some kind of 'eligibility verification' that was holding up the waiting week payment even though my regular benefits were coming through fine. made no sense but thats government for you i guess

•How did you finally get it resolved? Did you have to call or was there another way?

•i had to call like 50 times over 2 weeks before i got through to someone who could actually help. they said the waiting week was 'flagged for review' but nobody had actually reviewed it lol. took them 5 minutes to release the payment once i got the right person

The waiting week thing is so confusing. I thought Washington eliminated the waiting week requirement during COVID but apparently it came back? Or maybe it was never eliminated? I can never keep track of all these rule changes.

•The waiting week requirement was waived during the pandemic but it was reinstated in 2023. So if you filed your claim recently, you do have to serve a waiting week but it gets paid out after 4 weeks of receiving benefits.

•Thanks for clarifying that. The constant rule changes make it impossible to know what's current.

I had a similar issue but it turned out I had a minor mistake on one of my weekly claims that was preventing the waiting week from being released. Even though it didn't affect my regular weekly payments, it somehow flagged the waiting week for review. Once I corrected the mistake, the payment came through within a few days.

•What kind of mistake was it? I'm wondering if I might have made a similar error.

•I had incorrectly reported some part-time work hours on week 3. I put down 20 hours when it should have been 15. Small mistake but apparently it triggered some kind of review process.

•Hmm, I don't think I made any mistakes like that but I'll go back and double check all my weekly claims.

Another thing to check - make sure your job search requirements are up to date. Sometimes they won't release certain payments if you're behind on your job search log or if there are issues with your WorkSource registration.

•I've been keeping up with my job searches and logging them properly. But I'll double check that everything is current in WorkSource.

•Good call. I know someone who had their benefits held up because their WorkSource profile was missing some required information even though they were actively job searching.

UGH the Washington ESD system is such a mess. I swear they make it as difficult as possible on purpose. Why can't they just automate this stuff properly so we don't have to jump through hoops for every little thing???

•Seriously! You'd think in 2025 they could figure out how to make these systems work smoothly.

•I get the frustration but complaining doesn't help solve the problem. OP needs practical solutions right now.

I used to work at a unemployment office in another state and can tell you that waiting week issues are usually pretty easy to fix once you get the right person on the phone. The problem is just getting through to someone who knows what they're doing. Most of the time it's just a checkbox that needs to be clicked in the system.

•That's encouraging to hear. Makes me feel better about trying that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

•Yeah, that's exactly why I recommend it. Once you actually get connected to an agent, these issues usually get resolved quickly. It's just the getting connected part that's impossible.

Maybe try filing an online inquiry through the Washington ESD website? Sometimes that works better than calling. I know it takes longer to get a response but at least you don't have to sit on hold.

•I tried that for a different issue and never got a response after 3 weeks. Phone is really the only way to get quick help.

•Yeah I've heard the online inquiries can take forever. I need this resolved sooner than that.

Just want to add another success story for Claimyr - I was skeptical at first but used them when I had an overpayment issue that needed to be explained. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call. Was definitely worth it for the time saved.

•Okay you've convinced me. If multiple people are saying it works, maybe it's worth trying.

•Same here. I think I'm going to give it a shot this week. This waiting week issue has been driving me crazy.

One more thing to check - log into your Washington ESD account and look at your 'Payment History' section specifically. Sometimes the waiting week payment shows up there even if it doesn't appear in your regular weekly payment list. It might be listed as a separate transaction type.

Ethan Brown
•I'll check that right now. Thanks for the tip!

•Good suggestion. The Washington ESD website layout can be confusing and payments sometimes show up in unexpected places.

OP, did you ever figure this out? I'm having the exact same issue and found this thread while searching for answers.

•Still working on it. I checked all the suggestions here and couldn't find the payment anywhere in my account. Planning to try Claimyr tomorrow to actually get through to someone at Washington ESD.
