When do I get paid for my waiting week on unemployment Washington ESD?
I've been filing my weekly claims for about 6 weeks now and I'm still confused about this waiting week thing. I know Washington ESD makes you serve a waiting week before you get benefits, but when exactly do they pay you for that first week? Do they pay it at the end of your claim or is there some other trigger? I've been searching online but can't find a clear answer about when the waiting week payment gets released.

The waiting week gets paid out when your claim ends - either when you exhaust all your benefits or when your benefit year expires. It's basically held until the very end of your claim period.

•So if I'm on a regular 26-week claim, I'd get that waiting week payment in week 27?

Freya Thomsen
•Exactly right. It's like they hold that first week as collateral until your claim is completely finished.

•You should have gotten it! Check your payment history on your Washington ESD account - it might show up as a separate payment after your claim ended.

I had the same question last year and spent forever trying to reach someone at Washington ESD to get clarification. The phone lines are always jammed and when you do get through, you're often on hold for hours. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that explains how it works. The agent confirmed that yes, the waiting week gets paid at the end of your benefit year.

•Never heard of Claimyr before - did it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked great. I was skeptical at first but I was so frustrated with trying to call on my own. It connected me to an agent pretty quickly and I got my questions answered.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to Washington ESD.

•I hear you on that frustration. The service has different options but honestly after wasting so much time trying to call myself, it was worth it to finally get answers.

This is so typical of Washington ESD to make something simple sound complicated. They hold your waiting week payment hostage until the end just because they can. It's another way they make life harder for people who are already struggling.

•I mean it does make sense from a system perspective - prevents people from filing claims just to get one week of benefits then disappearing.

•Maybe but they could explain it better instead of leaving everyone confused about when they'll get paid.

Just to clarify the exact timing - your waiting week payment is issued when your benefit year ends (52 weeks from when you first filed) OR when you exhaust all 26 weeks of regular benefits, whichever comes first. If you go back to work before using all your benefits, you'd still get the waiting week paid when your benefit year expires.

•That's really helpful, thank you! So even if I find a job next month, I'd still eventually get that waiting week paid?

•Correct. As long as you served the waiting week and were eligible for benefits, you'll get it paid out when your benefit year ends.

I remember being so confused about this too when I first filed. The Washington ESD website doesn't really explain it clearly. I kept checking my payment history expecting to see that first week show up but it never did until my claim ended.

•Did you have to do anything special to get it or did it just automatically show up?

Zara Ahmed
•It showed up automatically as a separate payment about a week after my last regular benefit payment.

ok so i went back and checked my old payment history and you guys are right - there was a payment for my waiting week that came after everything else ended. i totally missed it before

Freya Thomsen
•Glad you found it! It's easy to miss since it comes so much later than everything else.

One more question - does the waiting week payment amount equal what my regular weekly benefit amount was?

Sean O'Donnell
•Yes, it should be the same as your regular weekly benefit amount, assuming you met all the eligibility requirements for that week.

This whole waiting week thing seems outdated honestly. Most people filing for unemployment need money right away, not a year later.

Diego Rojas
•Exactly! It's like they designed the system to be as unhelpful as possible when people are already stressed about money.

•I think the idea is to prevent fraud and make sure people are genuinely unemployed, but I agree the timing is pretty rough.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing since a few people asked - I ended up using it again when I had questions about my job search requirements. Really convenient when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of just guessing from their website.

•Good to know it worked more than once. I might try it if I run into other issues with my claim.

thanks everyone for explaining this. i was worried i was missing out on money i was supposed to get. feels better knowing it's just held until the end

•No problem! It's definitely confusing when you're new to the system.

so basically washington esd is holding our money for a year just because? seems like they could at least pay interest on it lol

Anastasia Sokolov
•Ha! That would be nice but I doubt they'd ever do that.

For anyone still confused about this - think of the waiting week payment as a 'bonus' payment that comes at the very end of your claim. It's money you earned but they hold it until your benefit year closes out completely.

•That's actually a helpful way to think about it. Like a delayed payment rather than money that just disappears.

Does anyone know if this waiting week rule applies to standby claims too? I'm on standby with my union and wasn't sure if the same rules apply.

Sean O'Donnell
•Yes, standby claims also have a waiting week that gets paid at the end. Same rules apply regardless of your claim type.

•Thanks! Good to know it's consistent across different claim types.

One thing I learned from talking to the Washington ESD agent through Claimyr is that if you have multiple claims in the same benefit year, you only serve one waiting week total. So if you go back to work then get laid off again within that year, no second waiting week.

•That's actually really good to know! I was wondering about that scenario.

just want to say this thread was super helpful. i was stressing about whether i was missing payments but now i understand the system better

•Glad it helped! The unemployment system is confusing enough without unclear payment timing.

Still think it's ridiculous that Washington ESD makes this so complicated but at least now I know my money isn't just gone forever.

Anastasia Sokolov
•Yeah the system definitely could use some improvements in how they communicate these things.

Thanks everyone for all the explanations! I feel much better knowing that waiting week payment is coming eventually, even if it's at the end of my claim.
