When do I request my waiting week on Washington ESD unemployment?
I'm confused about the waiting week thing. I filed my initial claim 2 weeks ago and have been doing my weekly claims, but I keep seeing references to requesting a waiting week. When exactly am I supposed to do this? Is it automatic or do I need to call Washington ESD? My claim shows as active but I haven't received any payments yet and I'm wondering if I missed something with the waiting week process.

The waiting week is automatically applied to your first week of filing, you don't need to request it separately. It should show up in your claim history as a non-payable week. Check your account on the Washington ESD website to see if it's been processed.

•I looked but I'm not seeing anything labeled as waiting week specifically. Should it show up as $0 payment or something else?

•Yes exactly, it'll show as $0.00 with a notation about waiting week. Sometimes takes a few days to update in the system.

i had the same confusion last month. you dont request it, its just the first week you file that doesnt get paid. its like a penalty week basically

•That makes more sense. So I should see payment for my second week then?

•yeah as long as your claim gets approved and theres no other issues

The waiting week is applied automatically to your benefit year. You don't request it - Washington ESD processes it as part of your initial claim. If you're not seeing payments after 2-3 weeks, there might be an adjudication issue holding up your claim. Have you tried calling to check your status?

•I've tried calling but can never get through. The phone system just hangs up on me after being on hold.

•Same problem here! I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm getting desperate here.

waiting week is such BS honestly. like why make people wait an extra week when theyre already struggling financially??

•I agree it's frustrating but it's been Washington state law for years. At least it's only one week now, used to be longer.

•still sucks when you need money for rent and groceries

To clarify the waiting week process: It's automatically applied to the first compensable week of your benefit year. You'll see it in your payment history as Week 1 with $0.00 paid and a waiting week designation. No action required on your part - just continue filing your weekly claims as normal.

•What if I had a partial week of work during my first week? Does that affect the waiting week?

•The waiting week still applies even with partial earnings. Your first week serves as the waiting week regardless of whether you had some work hours.

Just want to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I was skeptical at first but it really worked. They basically help you get through the Washington ESD phone queue without having to sit there hitting redial all day. Saved me hours of frustration.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about my claim issues. Way cheaper than missing more work to keep calling.

Update: I checked my account again and I can see the waiting week now! It's listed as Week 1 with $0 payment and says 'Waiting Week Applied'. Thanks everyone for explaining how this works.

•Great! So your payments should start showing up for the weeks after that.

Question about waiting weeks - do you have to serve a new waiting week if you reopen a claim within the same benefit year?
0 coins
Maggie Martinez
•No, you only serve one waiting week per benefit year. If you reopen within the same benefit year, no additional waiting week is required.

•Perfect, that's what I was hoping. Thanks!

The whole Washington ESD system is so confusing for first time filers. I remember being lost about the waiting week thing too. At least now they have better explanations on the website than they used to.

•Yeah the website has gotten better but it's still not super clear about timing and what to expect.

•Agreed. I had to call multiple times last year just to understand basic stuff about my claim.

Pro tip: take screenshots of your claim summary showing the waiting week applied. Sometimes helpful to have for your records if there are any payment issues later.

•Good idea, I'll do that now while I can see it clearly.

•Smart advice. I save all my Washington ESD screenshots in a folder on my phone.

Does the waiting week count toward your total weeks of benefits available or is it separate?

Maggie Martinez
•The waiting week does not reduce your total weeks of benefits available. It's separate from your 26 weeks of regular unemployment insurance.

•Thanks for clarifying that!

I wish Washington ESD would just eliminate the waiting week entirely. Most people filing for unemployment need help immediately, not after waiting an extra week.

•Some states have eliminated it during economic downturns. Maybe Washington will consider it in the future.

•Hope so. Every week matters when you're out of work.

For anyone still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about waiting week questions or other claim issues, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Worth checking out if you're stuck in phone tree hell.

•I might try that. Been trying to reach someone for two weeks about an issue with my job search log.

•Yeah exactly the kind of thing where talking to an actual person helps way more than trying to figure it out online.

Important reminder: even though your first week is the waiting week with no payment, you still need to file that weekly claim! Don't skip it thinking it doesn't matter.

•Good point. I almost skipped my first week thinking why bother if I won't get paid.

•Exactly - you need to file every week to keep your claim active, even the waiting week.

The waiting week thing confused me too when I first filed. Once you understand it's automatic and you don't need to do anything special, it makes more sense. Just keep filing your weekly claims and the payments will start after that first week.
