How long is the waiting week for unemployment in Washington - still confused about timing
I just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm trying to understand this waiting week thing. My friend said there's no waiting week anymore but I'm seeing conflicting info online. I lost my job at a restaurant downtown and need to know when I can expect my first payment. Should I keep filing weekly claims during this waiting period? I'm really stressed about rent coming up and want to make sure I'm doing everything right.

Good news - Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2023! You should be eligible for payment starting with your first week of unemployment as long as your claim is approved. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims every week.

•Oh thank god, that's such a relief! So I should get paid for this week if my claim goes through?

Emma Davis
•Yes, as long as you meet all the eligibility requirements and your claim isn't held up in adjudication.

Wait, are you sure about that? I thought Washington still had a waiting week. I filed in 2024 and had to wait.

•The waiting week was eliminated effective January 1, 2023. If you filed in 2024 and experienced a delay, it was likely due to adjudication or verification issues, not a waiting week.

•Hmm maybe that's what happened to me then. My claim was stuck in adjudication for like a month.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible. The phone lines are always busy and when I do get through I get disconnected. Has anyone found a better way to reach them?

•Actually yeah, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD agents. They basically call for you and get you connected to a real person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours calling myself.

The restaurant industry has been brutal lately. I got laid off from my server job last month too. Make sure you're documenting your job search activities because Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week.

•Thanks for the heads up! I've been applying places but wasn't keeping track. What counts as a job contact?

•Applications, interviews, networking events, even reaching out to employers directly. Just keep records of everything with dates and contact info.

hold up, i thought there was still a waiting week in washington? my sister filed last year and said she had to wait

•The waiting week was officially eliminated in 2023. Your sister may have experienced delays due to claim processing or verification requirements, which can feel like a waiting period but isn't the same thing as the old waiting week policy.

•oh okay that makes sense. she was definitely dealing with some verification stuff

I'm in the same boat - filed my claim on Monday and wondering when I'll see money. The anxiety is real when you're counting every dollar.

•Right?? I keep checking my account obsessively. Hope we both get approved quickly.

•Same here. At least we know there's no waiting week to deal with on top of everything else.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting paid by check takes forever with the mail delays. You can do it through your SecureAccess Washington account.

•Good call, I'll do that today. Every day counts when you're broke.

•Exactly. Direct deposit usually hits your account within 1-2 business days of being processed.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing honestly. Between the waiting week confusion and all the different claim types, it's hard to know what's current info and what's outdated.

Emma Davis
•Yeah, a lot of the information online is from pre-2023 when the waiting week was still in effect. Always check the official Washington ESD website for the most current policies.

•Will do. Thanks for clarifying about the waiting week being gone.

Quick question - do you have to be actively looking for work during your first week to qualify for benefits? Or can you take a few days to get organized?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•You need to be able and available for work from day one, which includes actively seeking employment. The job search requirement starts immediately, not after a grace period.

•Got it, thanks. Better start applying today then.

I filed my weekly claim yesterday and it's still showing as pending. Is that normal or should I be worried?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•It can take 24-48 hours for weekly claims to process, especially if it's your first one. If it's still pending after a few days, then you might want to contact Washington ESD.

•That's when Claimyr really helped me out. Instead of waiting on hold forever, I was able to talk to someone right away to check my claim status.

washington unemployment system is such a mess. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment last year because of all the delays and verification stuff

Make sure you're reporting any work you do, even if it's just a few hours. I know it's tempting to not mention small gigs but Washington ESD will find out eventually and you don't want an overpayment.

•Thanks for the warning. I might pick up some catering shifts while I'm looking for permanent work.

•Yeah, just report all income when you file your weekly claims. They'll adjust your benefit amount accordingly.

Does anyone know if the elimination of the waiting week applies to PUA or just regular unemployment?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•PUA ended in 2021. If you're filing now, you'd be filing for regular unemployment insurance which doesn't have a waiting week as of 2023.

•Ah okay, I was confused about the different programs. Thanks for clarifying.

I remember when I had to wait that extra week back in 2022 - it was brutal when you're already stressed about money. Glad they got rid of it.

Javier Morales
•Yeah, I can't imagine having to wait even longer. This is stressful enough as is.

•Hang in there, it gets better once your claim is approved and you get into the routine of filing weekly.

Just to double check - the waiting week elimination is permanent right? Not some temporary COVID thing that might come back?
0 coins
Emma Davis
•It's a permanent change to Washington state law. The waiting week is gone for good unless the legislature decides to bring it back, which seems unlikely.

•Perfect, that's what I was hoping to hear.

The best advice I can give is to file your weekly claims on the same day every week and keep detailed records of everything. Washington ESD loves their paperwork.

•Good tip! I'll set a reminder for Sundays to file my weekly claim.

If your claim does get stuck in adjudication for any reason, don't panic. It's frustrating but most issues get resolved eventually. Just keep filing your weekly claims.

Javier Morales
•What causes adjudication usually? I want to avoid that if possible.

•Usually it's things like questions about why you left your job, wage verification, or identity verification. Sometimes it's random.

•That's exactly what happened to me. Took forever to reach someone until I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

Bottom line - no waiting week in Washington anymore, file your weekly claims religiously, document your job search, and you should be good to go. Welcome to the unemployment club unfortunately.

I went through the same thing when I filed my Washington unemployment claim a few months ago - the waiting week confusion is real! Just to add to what others have said, make sure you have your Social Security card and ID ready when you file. Washington ESD is pretty strict about identity verification these days, and having all your documents ready can help prevent delays. Also, if you worked in multiple states recently, that can complicate things, so mention that upfront if it applies to you. Good luck with your claim!
