When do you get paid for your waiting week on unemployment in Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out the timing for when Washington ESD pays out the waiting week amount. I filed my initial claim about 6 weeks ago and have been getting my regular weekly benefits, but I'm still confused about when exactly they release the payment for that first waiting week. I know they hold it until certain conditions are met, but I can't find clear information about the timeline. Has anyone recently received their waiting week payment and can explain how long it took?

The waiting week gets paid out after you've been approved for at least 3 weeks of regular UI benefits. It's not automatic though - you have to have filed and been paid for those 3 consecutive weeks first. Since you said you've been getting benefits for 6 weeks, you should have received it by now. Check your payment history on your SecureAccess Washington account.

•Thanks! I'll double check my payment history. Maybe I missed it or it got mixed in with my regular payments.

I had the same question last month and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone. Their lines are always busy and when you do get through, you get disconnected half the time.

•Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open? That's usually the best time to get through to someone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah I tried that but still couldn't get through. The automated system just kept saying high call volume and hanging up on me.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to a Washington ESD agent when I had questions about my waiting week payment. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a video demo showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. It was way easier than trying to call myself.

•How much does that cost? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford to pay extra just to talk to someone about my benefits.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not having to redial constantly. Plus you're guaranteed to actually talk to someone instead of getting hung up on.

wait so they don't pay the waiting week automatically?? i thought it was just included in your first payment

•No, it's held separately. You have to complete 3 weeks of regular benefits first before they release the waiting week payment. It's Washington state law.

•that's confusing why don't they just tell you that upfront

The waiting week payment typically shows up 4-6 weeks after your initial claim is approved, assuming you've been filing your weekly claims consistently and haven't had any adjudication issues. If you had any weeks where you were disqualified or didn't file, that can delay it further.

•I haven't had any disqualifications and I've filed every week on time. I'll check my payment history more carefully to see if I missed it.

•Mine took exactly 4 weeks after my first regular payment. It showed up as a separate deposit on the same day as my weekly benefit that week.

This whole system is so confusing! Why can't Washington ESD just be more clear about when things get paid? I'm constantly worried I'm missing something important.

•I feel you. The uncertainty is the worst part. At least once you get the waiting week payment you know the system is working properly.

•Yeah I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on money I'm owed. Every dollar counts right now.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this - the waiting week is the FIRST week you file for unemployment. That week is unpaid initially, but Washington ESD holds that payment until you've proven you're eligible by receiving 3 consecutive weeks of regular benefits. It's designed to prevent people from getting paid for short-term unemployment.

•Thanks for explaining that! I was wondering why my first week seemed to disappear.

•That makes more sense now. So it's basically a security measure to make sure you're legitimately unemployed for more than just a week or two.

Mine took 5 weeks to show up. I think it depends on if you have any issues with your claim during those first few weeks. I had to verify my identity which delayed everything by about a week.

•Identity verification is such a pain. They asked for like 5 different documents and then took forever to process them.

•Yeah it was frustrating but at least everything worked out in the end. Just had to be patient.

I never got my waiting week payment and it's been 8 weeks now. Should I be worried? I've been getting regular benefits but that first week payment never showed up.

•You should definitely call Washington ESD about that. 8 weeks is too long - something might be wrong with your claim.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr. When you have issues like this, you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, not just wait and hope it gets fixed automatically.

•I'll try calling them but I'm not optimistic about getting through. Maybe I'll check out that Claimyr thing.

The payment usually comes as a separate deposit, not added to your regular weekly amount. Check your bank account for two deposits on the same day - one for your regular weekly benefit and one for the waiting week.

•Oh that's a good point! I might have overlooked it if it came as a separate deposit. I'll check my bank statements more carefully.

•Yeah mine came as two separate deposits about 2 hours apart. Easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

WASHINGTON ESD NEEDS TO COMMUNICATE BETTER ABOUT THIS STUFF!! How hard is it to send an email explaining when the waiting week gets paid? We're all stressed enough without having to guess about our benefits.

•Seriously! A simple notification would solve so much confusion. Instead we all have to figure it out ourselves or hunt around on forums like this.

•Exactly! They have our email addresses, they know when they process the payment, just send us a heads up!

If you're still having trouble getting answers, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. They got me connected to a Washington ESD rep who was able to look up my payment history and explain exactly when my waiting week would be processed. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person.

•Did they charge you a lot for that service?

•It was worth it for the peace of mind. Plus I got my question answered in 20 minutes instead of spending hours trying to call myself.

Just wanted to update everyone - I checked my payment history more carefully and found the waiting week payment! It came through 4 weeks after my first regular payment, just like some of you said. It was a separate deposit that I had missed. Thanks for all the help!

•That's great news! I'm going to check my statements again too. This gives me hope that mine might be there and I just overlooked it.

For anyone still confused about timing - the waiting week payment is triggered after you've been paid for 3 consecutive weeks of regular UI benefits AND you've continued to file your weekly claims. If you miss filing a week or get disqualified for any reason, it can delay the waiting week payment.

•What if you had a week where you worked part-time and reported earnings? Does that count as one of the 3 weeks?
0 coins
Chloe Harris
•Yes, as long as you still received some unemployment benefit that week, it counts toward the 3 weeks. The key is receiving payment, not the amount.

The whole waiting week concept is just another way for them to hold onto our money longer. It's frustrating but at least we do eventually get it back.

•True, but I think the idea is to prevent people from filing for unemployment for just a week or two and then going back to work. It ensures you're actually unemployed for a substantial period.

•I guess that makes sense from their perspective. Still annoying when you need the money though.
