When do I get unemployment benefits after filing with Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Thursday and I'm wondering when I should expect to actually receive my first payment. I know I have to do the weekly claims but I'm confused about the timing. Do I get paid for the week I filed or does it start the following week? And how long after I submit my weekly claim does the money usually show up? My last job ended two weeks ago and I'm getting pretty anxious about bills coming due.

There's a one week waiting period before you can receive any benefits. So you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. After that, you file weekly claims every Sunday for the previous week and if everything goes smoothly, payment usually hits your account within 2-3 business days.

•So I filed last Thursday - does that mean this week is my waiting week or was last week my waiting week?

Rhett Bowman
•Your waiting week would be the first week you were unemployed and eligible, so probably last week if that's when you lost your job. You should still file a weekly claim for this week though.

The timing can be confusing but here's what happened with me: Filed on a Tuesday, had to wait for the following Sunday to file my first weekly claim, then got paid 3 days later. The waiting week thing means you don't get paid for one week total, not that you wait a week to start filing.

•That makes more sense, thanks. So I should file my weekly claim this Sunday even though I won't get paid for my first week?

Abigail Patel
•Exactly! You need to file every week to keep your claim active, even for the waiting week.

Just a heads up - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication for any reason, those timelines go out the window. I waited 5 weeks for my first payment because they had to verify my employment history. If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually get through to an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Oh no, how do I know if my claim is in adjudication? My account just says 'processed' right now.

Daniel White
•If it says processed you should be good to go. Adjudication usually shows up as 'pending' or 'under review' and they'll send you paperwork to fill out.

•What exactly does Claimyr do? Is it worth paying for if I can't get through to Washington ESD on my own?

The Washington ESD system is pretty reliable for payments once you get approved. I've been filing weekly claims for 8 weeks now and I get my deposit every Tuesday like clockwork. Make sure you have direct deposit set up because the debit cards they send can take forever to arrive.

Danielle Campbell
•How do I set up direct deposit? I don't remember seeing that option when I filed.

Natalia Stone
•Log into your account and look for 'Payment Method' or 'Direct Deposit' in the menu. You'll need your bank routing and account numbers.

been filing for 3 months and payment comes every tuesday or wednesday depending on holidays. sometimes thursday if there's a bank holiday. first payment took like 2 weeks though because of some verification thing

•What kind of verification did they need from you?

One thing to keep in mind - you have to be actively looking for work and keeping a job search log. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week. If you don't meet those requirements, your benefits can get stopped even if you're filing your weekly claims on time.

•Where do I keep track of my job search activities? Is there a form I need to fill out?

Rhett Bowman
•You don't have to submit it with your weekly claim, but you need to keep your own records in case they audit you. Some people use a spreadsheet, others just keep a notebook.

•I got audited after 6 weeks and had to send in all my job search records. Definitely keep detailed notes of what you applied for and when.

The whole system is confusing honestly. I tried calling Washington ESD like 50 times last week and never got through to a human. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me - got connected to an agent in about 10 minutes and they explained everything about when my payments would start.

•Was it expensive to use? I'm already unemployed so I don't want to spend money unless I have to.

•It's worth it if you need answers fast. Way cheaper than missing a payment because you didn't understand something important.

•I've been calling Washington ESD for days with no luck. Might have to try this Claimyr service if I can't get through soon.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim as early as possible on Sunday. The system sometimes gets overwhelmed later in the day and you might have trouble submitting. I always do mine right after midnight and never have issues.

•Good to know! What happens if I miss the Sunday deadline?

•You can still file late but it might delay your payment. I think you have until the following Saturday but don't quote me on that.

ugh the waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my bank account every day that first week wondering where my money was. turns out I had made a mistake on my weekly claim and had to call to fix it

Danielle Campbell
•What kind of mistake? I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

•I accidentally said I worked when I didn't. be really careful with those yes/no questions on the weekly claim

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. Used it twice now when I had questions about my claim and both times got through to knowledgeable agents who actually helped solve my problems instead of giving me the runaround.

•Does it really work? I'm skeptical of services that claim to help you reach government agencies.

Daniel White
•I was skeptical too but it's legitimate. They don't ask for your personal info or anything sketchy, just help you get connected when the regular phone lines are jammed.

The most important thing is to stay consistent with your weekly claims. I know people who missed a week and had their whole claim get messed up. Even if you're not sure about something, file the claim and call Washington ESD later to clarify.
0 coins
Danielle Campbell
•That's good advice. Better to file something than nothing at all.
0 coins
Natalia Stone
•Exactly. You can always correct mistakes but you can't go back and file for a week you missed without jumping through hoops.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and the timeline is pretty predictable once you know what to expect. File Sunday, get paid Tuesday or Wednesday. The only time it's different is holidays or if there's an issue with your claim.

•Have you ever had any issues that delayed payments?

•Once I had to do a phone interview because my previous employer contested my claim. That delayed everything by about 3 weeks.

•Same thing happened to me. The phone interview was scary but not as bad as I thought it would be.

Make sure your address is correct in the system. I moved right after I got laid off and forgot to update my address with Washington ESD. Almost missed important paperwork because of it.

Danielle Campbell
•How do you update your address? Through the online account?

Selena Bautista
•Yes, you can do it online or call them. Online is faster if you can navigate the website.

don't stress too much about the timing. as long as you filed correctly and meet the requirements you'll get your money. i was freaking out my first time too but it all worked out

One more thing - make sure you understand the difference between your benefit year and your claim. Your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you first filed, but your individual claim might end sooner if you find work or exhaust your benefits.

Danielle Campbell
•How do I know how many weeks of benefits I'm eligible for?
0 coins
Rhett Bowman
•It should show in your account under benefit information. Usually it's 26 weeks but can be less depending on your work history.

The direct deposit setup is crucial. I waited 3 weeks for my debit card to arrive and missed out on using my first payment for bills. Should have set up direct deposit from the start.
0 coins
Danielle Campbell
•I'm definitely going to set that up today. Don't want to wait for a card to arrive.

•Smart move. The debit card works fine once you get it but direct deposit is just faster and more reliable.

Finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my claim was fine, I just didn't understand the payment schedule. Agent explained everything clearly and now I know what to expect. Worth every penny.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY WEEK EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU WON'T GET PAID. I learned this the hard way when I skipped my waiting week and it messed up my whole claim sequence. Had to start over completely.

Danielle Campbell
•Yikes, that sounds terrible. Good thing you mentioned it because I was thinking about skipping this week.

•Yeah don't make my mistake. File every single week no matter what, even if the payment is zero.

timeline for me was: filed Tuesday, got eligibility notice Friday, filed first weekly claim the following Sunday, got paid Wednesday. So about 8 days total from filing to first payment.

•That's really helpful to know the actual timeline. Gives me something concrete to expect.

•every situation is different but that's pretty typical if there are no complications with your claim

The job search requirement thing is no joke. They randomly audit people and if you can't prove you were looking for work, they'll make you pay back benefits. Keep detailed records of everything you do.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, updating your resume, even some online career workshops count. Check the Washington ESD website for the full list.

Bottom line - if you filed correctly and your employer doesn't contest it, you'll start getting paid within 2-3 weeks of filing. First payment might take a little longer but after that it's pretty regular. Don't panic if it doesn't happen immediately.
