When will I get my first unemployment check from Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering when I should expect to see my first payment. I completed all the ID verification stuff and submitted my job separation info. My claim shows as active but I haven't done any weekly claims yet since I just applied. Should I expect the money right away or does it take a while? I really need to know when this first check might hit my account because rent is due soon.

You won't get paid until you file your first weekly claim and it gets processed. Even then, there's usually a waiting week for new claims, so your first payment would be for the second week you're eligible. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday.

•Oh I didn't know about the waiting week thing. So even if I file this Sunday I won't get paid for that week?

Zara Ahmed
•Exactly. The first week is unpaid - it's called the waiting week. You'll get paid starting with your second eligible week.

depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. mine was stuck there for like 3 weeks before they approved it and i could start getting payments

•How do I know if it's in adjudication? My account just says active.

•If it's in adjudication, it will specifically say that on your claim status. Active usually means you're good to start filing weekly claims.

I was in the same boat a few months ago - couldn't get through to Washington ESD to check on my payment timing. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person at ESD within minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me understand when my payments would start.

•That sounds too good to be true - Washington ESD phone lines are impossible to get through.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They handle all the calling and waiting for you.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm broke waiting for my unemployment.

The typical timeline is: file initial claim → wait for approval → file first weekly claim (waiting week, no payment) → file second weekly claim → receive first payment about 2-3 business days after that weekly claim is processed. So roughly 2-3 weeks from when you first applied if everything goes smoothly.

•That's longer than I hoped but at least now I know what to expect. Thanks for breaking it down.

•this is assuming nothing goes wrong which LOL good luck with that. washington esd loves to mess things up for no reason

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too! Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA. If you don't do this, they can hold up your payments even if everything else is fine.

•Wait, I have to do job searches already? I thought I had more time to look for work.

•Job search requirements start immediately unless you're on standby. You need to register with WorkSourceWA and start logging activities right away.

•Good catch - this is super important. Many people don't realize the job search requirements kick in immediately and then wonder why their payments get held up.

been waiting 6 weeks for my first payment because they keep saying theres an issue with my separation but wont tell me what it is... might have to try that claimyr thing someone mentioned

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helped me - getting actual answers about claim issues that they won't explain in their automated messages.

just to add - if you get your payment by debit card it takes an extra day or two to show up compared to direct deposit

Sean O'Connor
•I set up direct deposit so hopefully that'll be faster when the payment does come.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. I've been trying to get my payments for weeks and they keep giving me the runaround. Don't expect anything to work the way it's supposed to with Washington ESD.

•I understand the frustration, but most claims do process normally within the expected timeframe. The problem cases just get more attention.

•maybe for you but ive had nothing but problems since day one

One thing to watch out for - make sure you file your weekly claims by the Sunday deadline each week. If you miss filing, you can't get paid for that week and you'll have to explain why you missed it if you want that week's benefits later.

Sean O'Connor
•Good to know. What time on Sunday is the cutoff?
0 coins
Nia Johnson
•You have until 11:59 PM Pacific time on Sunday to file your weekly claim for the previous week.

my cousin got her first check exactly 17 days after filing but that was because she had a really straightforward case with no complications

•That gives me hope since my case seems pretty straightforward too.

Also worth mentioning - your weekly benefit amount and duration should be shown in your eServices account once your claim is approved. This will help you budget while you're job searching.

Sean O'Connor
•Yeah I can see my weekly amount, it's $487 per week for up to 26 weeks.

Ethan Davis
•That's a decent amount. Just remember taxes aren't automatically taken out unless you request it, so set some aside for tax time.

update - tried that claimyr service and finally got through to someone at Washington ESD. turns out my employer disputed my claim and thats why it was held up. at least now i know what to do about it

•Great to hear it worked for you too! Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to figure out what's going on.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about - not knowing if there's a problem with my claim.

For what it's worth, I'd recommend calling Washington ESD directly first if you have questions. The number is 1-800-318-6022, though yes, it's very hard to get through. But it's free and they can give you the same information.

•good luck with that lol ive been trying that number for weeks and never get through

•Fair point - the phone lines are definitely overwhelmed. Best times to try are right when they open at 8 AM.

Don't forget about the work search requirements! I almost lost my benefits because I didn't realize I needed to be actively looking for work and logging it from week one.

•Someone else mentioned this too. I guess I better get signed up with WorkSource Washington ASAP.

Carmen Ortiz
•Yes, definitely. You need to register there and log 3 work search activities per week to keep getting benefits.

honestly the waiting is the worst part. once you start getting regular payments its fine but that first month is really stressful when you dont know whats happening

•That's exactly how I'm feeling right now. The uncertainty is killing me.

Just to summarize for OP: 1) Make sure your claim shows as active 2) File your first weekly claim this Sunday 3) Register with WorkSource and start job search activities 4) Your first payment (if approved) will be for your second eligible week, typically 2-3 weeks after initial filing 5) Set up direct deposit if you haven't already for faster payments.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll make sure to do all of these things.

one more thing - keep checking your eservices account regularly for any messages or requests for additional info. if they need something from you and you dont respond quickly it can delay everything

Sean O'Connor
•Good point. I'll make sure to check it daily.

yeah my advice is just be patient but persistent. the system works eventually but it takes time and sometimes you have to advocate for yourself

Just remember that even though it feels like forever when you're waiting, most people do eventually receive their benefits. Hang in there!

Final thought - if you do run into any roadblocks or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD about your specific timeline, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. Worth checking out their demo if the regular phone lines aren't working for you.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into any issues. Hopefully everything goes smoothly though.
