How long after applying for Washington ESD unemployment do you get paid?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and still haven't received any payment. My claim status shows as 'Active' but I'm not sure when I should expect to actually get paid. I've been filing my weekly claims on time through eServices. Is there a typical timeframe for first payments? Getting stressed about rent coming up next week.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Did you complete your ID verification yet? That can delay things if it's not done.

•Yeah I did the ID.me verification when I first applied. Status still just says active with no pending issues showing.

•Same here, took about 3 weeks for me to get my first check last month. Just keep filing your weekly claims.

The waiting period is usually one week, then you get paid for the second week you file. So if you filed your initial claim and then filed for week 1 and week 2, you'd get paid for week 2. But processing can take additional time.

•This is confusing me - so there's always a one week delay? I thought you got paid for every week you file for.

•There's a one week waiting period for your very first week of unemployment. After that you get paid for each week you're eligible and file for.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my payment delay and can never get through. Their phone system is completely overloaded. Recently found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work? I've called hundreds of times and never gotten through.

•Yeah it worked for me. Got connected to an agent within about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They explained exactly what was holding up my payments.

•Interesting, I might try that. I've been calling since 8am every day for two weeks and nothing.

Make sure you're checking your ESD account regularly for any action items or letters. Sometimes they send notices about additional documentation needed and if you miss those it can delay everything for weeks.

•I check it daily and there's nothing in my inbox or action items. Just shows my weekly claims as processed.

•Same situation here. Filed 3 weeks ago, no issues showing, but still no payment. This is ridiculous.

depending on your bank it can take extra days for the deposit too. I use a credit union and it takes 2-3 business days after Washington ESD processes the payment

•Good point! I have Chase and it usually shows up the next business day after processing.

•I have Wells Fargo, should be pretty quick once it processes then.

The whole system is backed up right now. I know people who waited 4-5 weeks for their first payment even with no issues on their claim. Just keep filing your weeklies and be patient.

•4-5 weeks?? How are people supposed to survive that long without income? This is insane.

•Tell me about it. I had to borrow money from family just to pay my bills while waiting.

•The system is broken. They collect taxes from us for years then make us jump through hoops when we need help.

Check if your employer contested your claim. That can trigger an adjudication process that takes weeks or months to resolve. You won't get paid until that's finished.

Benjamin Carter
•How would I know if they contested it? Would it show up somewhere in my account?
0 coins
Jade Santiago
•Yes, it would show under 'Pending Issues' or 'Determinations' in your account. You'd also get a letter about it.

•This happened to me. My employer contested and it took 2 months to get resolved. No payments during that time either.

I used Claimyr when I was having payment issues last month. Got through to an agent who told me there was a hold on my account that wasn't showing up online. They released it while I was on the phone and I got paid three days later.

•That's exactly what I need. I bet there's something wrong with my account that's not showing up. Thanks for the rec.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment.

•It's pretty reasonable considering how much time it saves versus trying to call yourself. Worth it if you need answers fast.

Are you filing for the right weeks? Some people get confused about which weeks to file for and end up missing payments they're eligible for.

•I'm filing for every week since I became unemployed. The system lets me file so I assume I'm doing it right.

Zoey Bianchi
•Yeah if the system accepts your weekly claim filing then you're probably doing it correctly.

First payment always takes the longest. After that it's usually pretty consistent, maybe 3-4 days after you file your weekly claim. Hang in there.

•That's reassuring. I was worried this would be the timeline every week.

Grace Johnson
•Nope, just the first one. After that it's much smoother unless something goes wrong with your claim.

Washington ESD website says 2-3 weeks for first payment but that's when everything goes perfectly. Reality is often longer unfortunately.

Nora Brooks
•Their timelines are basically meaningless at this point. Everything takes longer than they say.
0 coins
Eli Wang
•Exactly. I've learned to add at least a week to whatever timeline they give you.

Make sure you're not missing any work search requirements. If you're supposed to be looking for work and not documenting it properly, that can hold up payments.

Benjamin Carter
•I've been logging my job searches in WorkSourceWA like they told me to. Is there anything else I need to do?
0 coins
Cassandra Moon
•That should be enough. Just make sure you're meeting the minimum number of searches per week for your situation.

Zane Hernandez
•What's the minimum? I've been doing 3 per week but not sure if that's enough.

I tried that claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got connected to an agent who found an issue with my social security number verification that was blocking my payments. Fixed it on the spot.

•Wow that's great! How long did it take to get connected?

•About 15 minutes. Way better than the hours I was spending trying to call directly.

Sometimes there are random holds on accounts that don't show up in the online system. Only way to find out is to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, which is nearly impossible without help.

•This is probably what's happening to me. My account looks fine online but no payments.

•Yeah that hidden hold thing is super common. They really need to fix their system to show all issues online.

Just got my first payment today after 3 weeks and 2 days! No issues on my claim, it just took that long to process. Keep filing your weeklies and it will come.

Benjamin Carter
•That gives me hope! Did you get paid for all the weeks you filed for?

•Yes, got paid for all weeks except the first one (that's the waiting week). Pretty decent chunk of money all at once.

The key is to keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't been paid yet. If you stop filing you'll lose those weeks and won't get paid for them later.

Update: Used claimyr to get through to Washington ESD and they found a verification issue that was holding up my payments. Agent fixed it immediately and said I should see payment within 3-5 business days. Definitely recommend if you're stuck like I was.

For anyone still waiting - the longest I've seen is 6 weeks for first payment, but that was with multiple issues on the claim. Most people get paid within 3-4 weeks if there are no problems.

Freya Collins
•6 weeks is insane. How do they expect people to survive that long?

•The system definitely needs improvement. But at least most people don't wait that long.
