Why am I not receiving my unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD about 6 weeks ago and still haven't received a single payment. My claim shows as active when I log into my account but every weekly claim I submit just sits there with no payment date. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously and doing my job searches through WorkSource. Is this normal? What could be holding up my benefits? I'm starting to panic because rent is due next week.

Check your claim status carefully - is there an adjudication issue showing? Sometimes Washington ESD puts a hold on benefits if there's any question about your separation from your last employer or work history verification.

•Where exactly do I look for adjudication status? I don't see anything obvious in my account.

•Log into your Washington ESD account and look under 'Claim Summary' - there should be a section that shows if there are any pending issues or determinations needed.

6 weeks is way too long without any communication from them. Have you tried calling the customer service line? I know it's hard to get through but you need answers.

•I've tried calling dozens of times but either get busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for 2+ hours. It's impossible.

•Same experience here - Washington ESD phone system is completely overwhelmed. Try calling right when they open at 8am.

I had this exact same problem last year. Turns out there was an identity verification hold that I never got notified about. You might want to try using Claimyr.com - they have a service that helps you get through to actual Washington ESD agents. I watched their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and it actually worked for me.

•Never heard of Claimyr - is it legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•It's legitimate - they basically help you navigate the phone system to reach a real person at Washington ESD. Saved me weeks of frustration.

•Identity verification issues are super common right now. Definitely sounds like that could be your problem.

Are you sure you're completing your weekly claims correctly? You have to certify that you're actively looking for work and report any income, even if it's zero.

Olivia Kay
•Yes I'm doing everything right - answering all the questions about job search, reporting zero income, saying I'm able and available to work.

•Good, just wanted to rule out the obvious stuff. This definitely sounds like an adjudication or verification issue then.

Washington ESD is a nightmare right now. I've been waiting 8 weeks for my adjudication to clear. The system is completely broken and they don't care about us.

•8 weeks?! How are you surviving? This is insane.

•Have you tried reaching out to your state representative? Sometimes political pressure helps move things along.

•I tried that too but got a form letter response saying they're 'looking into it.' Meanwhile I'm about to lose my apartment.

Check if there's a 'determination' letter in your online account under documents. Washington ESD sometimes issues these without mailing physical copies and they contain important information about why benefits might be held up.

Olivia Kay
•I'll check that right now - didn't know to look there.

•This is good advice - I found a determination letter there that I never would have seen otherwise.

Did you have any issues with your last employer? Sometimes they dispute the claim and it triggers an automatic review process that can take months.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing - nothing controversial. But maybe they're disputing it anyway?

•Employers sometimes dispute claims even for legitimate layoffs to keep their unemployment tax rates down. It's frustrating but common.

•This happened to me - former employer lied and said I quit when I was actually terminated. Took 3 months to sort out.

Update - I actually used Claimyr again last month for a different issue and they're still working great. If you can't get through on your own, it's worth trying. The alternative is waiting indefinitely.

•How much does Claimyr cost though? I'm already broke from not getting benefits.

•I'd rather pay a small fee to talk to someone than wait months for no response. Check their site for current info.

Same boat here - filed 5 weeks ago and nothing. This is ridiculous. How are people supposed to survive?
0 coins
Olivia Kay
•Right? I'm starting to think about taking any job just to pay bills, which defeats the purpose of unemployment benefits.

Charlie Yang
•Exactly! But then if you take a job and quit or get laid off again, you have to start this whole process over.

One more thing to check - make sure your bank account information is correct in your Washington ESD profile. I've seen cases where benefits were 'issued' but sent to an old closed account.

Olivia Kay
•Bank info is definitely correct - I double checked that multiple times.

•Good point though - I had a friend who was wondering where her payments were and they were going to her ex-husband's account somehow.

Try logging in at different times of day - sometimes the website shows different information depending on when their systems update. I've noticed claim status changes overnight sometimes.

•Interesting - I usually check in the morning. I'll try checking at night too.

Washington ESD has been completely overwhelmed since COVID and they never really recovered. The adjudication backlog is massive and they're understaffed. Unfortunately you're caught in that mess.

Isabella Russo
•It's been over 4 years since COVID started - how is this still an excuse?
0 coins
James Johnson
•It's not really an excuse, just the reality of the situation. The system wasn't designed to handle this volume long-term.

Have you tried reaching out through their online messaging system? Sometimes that gets faster responses than phone calls.
0 coins
Olivia Kay
•I sent two messages through their portal but haven't heard back after 2 weeks.

Rajiv Kumar
•Ugh, that's not encouraging. The whole system is just broken.

whatever you do dont stop filing your weekly claims even if youre not getting paid yet!! if you miss weeks you could lose eligibility entirely

Olivia Kay
•Yeah I'm definitely keeping up with those - scary to think I could lose everything by missing a week.

•This is crucial advice - I know someone who stopped filing because they weren't getting paid and then lost months of backpay.

I'm a former Washington ESD employee and unfortunately this is becoming the norm. The agency is severely understaffed and the computer system is from the 1980s. Your best bet is to keep trying to reach a human who can look at your specific case.

•Any insider tips on the best times to call or ways to get through?

•Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be slightly less busy than Mondays. But honestly, services like Claimyr exist because the phone system is so broken.

Keep detailed records of everything - every phone call attempt, every message sent, every weekly claim filed. If this ends up in an appeal you'll need documentation.

•Good point - I should start writing everything down with dates and times.

This thread is depressing but helpful. At least I know I'm not the only one dealing with this nightmare. Washington ESD really needs to get their act together.

•The fact that services like Claimyr even need to exist shows how broken the system is.
