How long does it take to get approved for unemployment in Washington - still waiting after 2 weeks
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago after getting laid off from my warehouse job. My claim status still shows 'pending' and I haven't received any payment yet. I've been doing my weekly claims but nothing seems to be moving forward. How long does it usually take to get approved? I'm starting to stress about rent and bills coming up. Has anyone else experienced delays like this recently?

Two weeks is pretty normal actually. Washington ESD usually takes 2-4 weeks for initial claim processing, especially if they need to verify your employment history with previous employers. Did you get any correspondence from them asking for additional documentation?

•No letters or emails yet. Should I be worried if I don't hear anything? My last employer was a big company so I figured verification would be straightforward.

•If it's a large employer, verification usually goes smoothly. Keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account for any alerts or required actions.

Ugh I'm in the same boat! Filed 3 weeks ago and still nothing. This is so frustrating, I keep calling but can never get through to anyone at Washington ESD.

•The phone lines are absolutely impossible. I spent 6 hours calling yesterday and kept getting hung up on or told to call back later.

•Actually, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, how does that work exactly? Is it legit?

In my experience, if there's no red flags in your claim it usually takes about 3 weeks total. But if they need to do adjudication for any reason, that can add another 2-4 weeks on top. Have you checked if your claim went into adjudication status?

•How do I check that? I only see 'pending' when I log into my account.

•Look under your claim details section. If it says 'adjudication in progress' that means they're investigating something about your claim - could be separation reason, wages, or eligibility.

2 weeks isn't bad at all! I waited 6 weeks last year because of some mix-up with my employer reporting. At least you're getting weekly claims filed - that's important.

•6 weeks?? That's terrifying. How did you survive financially during that time?

•It was rough, had to borrow money from family. But when it finally got approved I got all the back pay at once, so that helped.

The system is so broken. They expect people to wait weeks without income while they 'process' claims. Meanwhile bills don't stop coming.

•I feel this so hard. Lost my job right before Christmas and still waiting for first payment. It's like they don't understand people need money to live.

•I understand the frustration, but Washington ESD has to verify eligibility and prevent fraud. The process exists for good reasons, even if it's slow.

Have you made sure you're completing all the job search requirements? Sometimes claims get held up if you're not logging enough job contacts in WorkSource.

•I've been applying to jobs but haven't been logging them anywhere specific. Where am I supposed to do that?

•You need to register with WorkSourceWA.com and log your job search activities there. Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week minimum.

Carmen Lopez
•Oh no, I had no idea about that requirement! Could that be why my claim is delayed?

Yeah, missing job search requirements can definitely delay your claim. But once you get registered with WorkSource and start logging activities, it should move forward. Claimyr can also help you talk to an agent to clarify exactly what's needed for your specific situation.

•How exactly does Claimyr work? Do they actually get you through to real Washington ESD people?

•Yes, they connect you with actual Washington ESD representatives. Much better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

I got approved in exactly 21 days last month. Filed on a Tuesday, got my first payment three weeks later on a Wednesday. Just had to be patient.

•That gives me hope! Was your claim straightforward or did you have any complications?

•Pretty straightforward, regular layoff from a restaurant job. No adjudication needed.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval! I made that mistake my first time and it delayed everything even more.

•I've been filing them every week since I applied. Good to know that's the right thing to do.

•Yes, always keep filing even if you're not getting paid yet. Those weeks are what you'll get back pay for once approved.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account obsessively every day. Try to distract yourself with job searching and other productive activities.

•That's exactly what I'm doing - checking multiple times a day hoping something changed. Thanks for the reminder to focus on job hunting.

•Same here, became obsessed with refreshing the page. Nothing you can do but wait unfortunately.

If you need immediate help with expenses, look into local food banks and assistance programs. Many don't require you to be receiving benefits yet, just proof that you applied.

•That's a good idea, I hadn't thought about other assistance programs. Do you know of any specific ones in Washington?

•211 is a good resource - dial 2-1-1 and they can connect you with local assistance programs for food, utilities, rent help, etc.

Just remember that once you do get approved, you'll get back pay for all the weeks you've been filing. So you won't lose out on that money, it's just delayed.

•That's reassuring to know. I was worried I'd lose those weeks if the approval took too long.

•Exactly, as long as you keep filing weekly you'll get everything you're owed when it processes.

Update us when you hear something! Always good to know current processing times. Fingers crossed it comes through soon.

If you do need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I had success with Claimyr recently. Took about 20 minutes to get connected versus the hours I was spending calling directly. Worth checking out their demo video to see if it might help your situation.

•Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. I might give it a try if I don't hear anything by next week.

•Same, the calling situation is just impossible otherwise. At least there's an option now.
