How long does it take to get your first unemployment check from Washington ESD?
Just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Thursday and wondering when I should expect to see my first payment. I know I have to do the waiting week but after that how long before the money actually hits my account? I'm getting nervous about rent coming up and want to know what timeline I'm looking at. Has anyone gotten their first check recently and can tell me the actual timeframe?

It depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If everything is straightforward, you'll do your waiting week, then file your first weekly claim, and get paid about 2-3 business days after that weekly claim is processed. So roughly 2 weeks total from filing if no issues.

•What would cause it to go into adjudication? I left my job because of a layoff so I thought that would be pretty clear cut.

•Layoffs are usually fine but sometimes they flag things for verification - like if you had multiple jobs recently or there's confusion about your last day worked. Most layoff claims go through without issues though.

It depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If everything is straightforward and Washington ESD doesn't need to verify anything, you could see your first payment within 2-3 weeks after filing. But if there are any issues with your claim - like questions about why you left your job or earnings verification - it could take 4-6 weeks or longer.

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication? Is there a way to check online?
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•Yeah, log into your Washington ESD account and check your claim status. If it says 'adjudication in progress' or 'pending' with issues to resolve, that's when you know it's delayed.

I just went through this process 3 weeks ago. Filed on a Tuesday, did my waiting week, filed my first weekly claim the following Sunday, and got paid that Wednesday. So exactly 2 weeks from filing to payment for me. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday!

•That's good to hear! Did you get any kind of confirmation when your claim was approved or did you just have to wait and see?

•You'll get a determination letter in your secure message center on the Washington ESD website. Mine came about 5 days after I filed the initial claim.

took me 3 weeks to get my first check but that was back in 2023. seems like it might be faster now

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is that legitimate? I'm always worried about third party services when it comes to government stuff.

Charlee Coleman
•Yeah it's legit, they just help you get through the phone queue. You still talk directly to Washington ESD agents, not them. Really helpful when the lines are swamped.

The waiting week is such BS honestly. Like we're already stressed about losing our job and they make us wait an extra week before any money comes in. Other states don't do this anymore but Washington still does.

•I know it sucks but at least we still have decent benefit amounts compared to some states. Could be worse I guess.

•True, the weekly benefit amount isn't terrible here. Still annoying though when you need money right away.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you're doing your job search activities right away even during the waiting week. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to log them in your WorkSourceWA account. Don't wait until you start getting paid to begin the job search requirement.
0 coins
LongPeri
•Do I need to create a separate WorkSourceWA account or is it connected to my unemployment account?
0 coins
Oscar O'Neil
•It's a separate account but you link them together. Go to worksourcewa.com and create an account there, then link it to your unemployment claim in your secure access account.

Carmella Fromis
•Wait I thought the job search requirement was waived during waiting weeks? That's what someone told me.
0 coins
Oscar O'Neil
•Nope, you need to do job searches every week you claim benefits, including the waiting week. It's a common misconception that causes people to get dinged later.

The Washington ESD website says processing takes up to 21 days, but in reality it's usually closer to 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even before you get paid - that's really important.

•I've been doing the weekly claims but it feels weird claiming when I haven't gotten anything yet
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
•That's normal! You have to keep filing or you'll lose those weeks of benefits. The system backpays you once everything is processed.

Mine took 3 weeks because they had to verify my identity. Apparently having moved recently flagged something in their system. Just be patient and keep checking your secure messages for any requests for additional info.
0 coins

•How did you know they needed identity verification? Did they send you a message?

•Yes, I got a message in my secure message center asking me to upload documents. Check that regularly, don't just wait for emails.

•I know it's scary but try not to panic. Most claims do process within 3 weeks. Have you checked if there are any issues flagged on your account?

Andre Lefebvre
•No issues showing up but I'm worried they're going to find something wrong. What if I made a mistake on my application?

•If you made an honest mistake, they'll usually just ask for clarification. It's not the end of the world.

The whole Washington ESD system is a joke. I waited 6 weeks for my first check last year because they said they needed to verify my employment, even though I provided all the documentation they asked for.

•That's terrifying. Did you eventually get all your back pay?

For anyone reading this thread later - the key is to file your weekly claims every single week even if your initial claim is still pending. You can't get paid for weeks you don't claim, so don't skip filing weekly claims thinking you'll catch up later.

•Good to know! So I should start filing weekly claims this Sunday even though I just filed my initial claim last week?

The direct deposit usually comes on Wednesday if you file your weekly claim by Sunday night. At least that's been my experience for the past 6 months. Very consistent timing once you get in the rhythm.

Just remember that your first payment might be a little less than your full weekly benefit amount because they prorate it based on when you filed during the week. Scared me the first time because I thought they calculated my benefits wrong.

AaliyahAli
•Yeah this happened to me too. Filed on a Wednesday and my first payment was only for 4 days instead of the full week.

•That makes sense. I filed on Thursday so I guess my first payment will be prorated for 3 days.

Just to clarify the timeline for everyone: Washington ESD has up to 21 days to process your initial claim. If approved, your first payment typically comes 2-3 days after approval via direct deposit, or 5-7 days if you're getting a debit card. The key is making sure there are no red flags that trigger adjudication.
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•What kind of things trigger adjudication? I'm worried I might have something that causes delays.
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•Common triggers include: quitting your job, being fired for misconduct, having wages from multiple states, or discrepancies in your work history. If you were laid off due to lack of work, you should be fine.
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
•Also if you worked for a company that contests your claim, that can cause delays too

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually helped me get through to find out what was holding things up. The agent was able to tell me exactly what documents they needed.

Update: Just checked my account and there's a message saying they need to verify my last employer. How long does that usually take??
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•Employer verification can take 1-2 weeks. They send a notice to your employer who has 10 days to respond. If the employer doesn't respond, they usually approve the claim.

Andre Lefebvre
•Ok that's not as bad as I thought. At least I know what's happening now.

Pro tip: Set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card takes longer to arrive and then you have to wait for it to be activated. Direct deposit is much faster.

Don't forget you also have to complete your job search requirements starting right away, even before you get paid. That's 3 job search activities per week in Washington.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and both times it was exactly 2 weeks from filing to first payment. Washington ESD is actually pretty reliable once your claim is approved, it's just getting through the initial approval that can be tricky sometimes.

One more tip - if you're really strapped for cash while waiting, check if you qualify for emergency assistance programs. Some counties have programs that can help with rent or utilities while you're waiting for unemployment to kick in.

The whole process stressed me out so much when I first filed. But honestly once you get that first payment it becomes pretty routine. File weekly claims on Sunday, get paid Wednesday. Just hang in there through the initial waiting period.

I'd recommend calling Washington ESD if you don't hear anything after 10 business days from filing. Sometimes claims get stuck and need a nudge. That's when services like Claimyr come in handy since the phone lines are always busy.
