Remember to keep records of everything - your application, weekly claims, job search activities, any correspondence with Washington ESD. You never know when you might need to reference something later.
Last thing - if you do part-time work while collecting unemployment, make sure you report it on your weekly claims. You can still get partial benefits in most cases, but you have to be honest about any work you do.
weekly payments are nice because you get money more often than biweekly but also means you have to remember to file more often. i set a reminder on my phone every sunday so i dont forget
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Sounds like I need to set up a routine for filing weekly claims and just be patient with the payment timing. This thread was way more helpful than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website.
If you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD for questions, remember that Claimyr option. Sometimes having a real person explain things makes all the difference.
Bottom line: the unemployment rate is calculated as unemployed people divided by total labor force. For your UI benefits, it mainly matters for potentially triggering extended benefit programs when the rate stays high for consecutive months. Your individual benefit amount is based on your wages, not the unemployment rate.
One more thing - if you're having trouble getting information from Washington ESD directly, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier actually works. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent who explained my claim status in 5 minutes vs the weeks I spent trying to call myself.
And remember, if you need help reaching ESD for any reason during the process, Claimyr is there as a backup option. Sometimes talking to a real person can clear up confusion faster than trying to figure things out online.

For what it's worth, once you understand how the waiting week works, it's pretty straightforward. Just think of it as your last week's payment instead of your first week's payment.

•That's actually a helpful way to think about it. Makes it feel less like they're withholding money and more like delayed payment.

•Good perspective. Still annoying but at least it makes sense when you frame it that way.

Thanks everyone for all the info about waiting weeks. This thread has been super helpful in understanding how it actually works versus what I thought it was supposed to do.

•Agreed! Really glad I asked about this. Now I know to just be patient and wait until the end of my benefit year.

•Same here. Was getting worried something was wrong with my account but sounds like everything is normal.
