Washington ESD unemployment benefits - do I qualify for food stamps too?
I'm currently getting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD after losing my job at a warehouse in Tacoma. My weekly benefit amount is $487 and I'm wondering if I can still apply for food stamps (SNAP) while receiving UI benefits? I have two kids and the unemployment isn't quite covering all our expenses. Does anyone know if Washington ESD unemployment disqualifies you from getting food assistance? I'm really confused about how these programs work together.

You can definitely apply for SNAP while getting unemployment! UI benefits count as income but they don't automatically disqualify you. The income limits are pretty reasonable especially with kids.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do you know if I apply through the same website as Washington ESD or is it different?

•No it's totally separate - you apply through Washington Connection at washingtonconnection.org. Way easier process than dealing with ESD honestly.

Yes, unemployment benefits are considered income for SNAP purposes, but they don't exclude you from eligibility. For a household of 3 people, the gross monthly income limit is around $2,500 for SNAP in Washington state. Your UI benefits would count toward this limit, but you'd likely still qualify.

•Thank you for the specific numbers! That helps a lot. My monthly UI is about $1,950 so it sounds like I should be under the limit.

•Make sure to include any child support or other income too when you calculate. They look at everything.

I've been in this exact situation and got approved for both. The key thing is being honest about your unemployment income on the SNAP application. They'll verify it anyway so don't try to hide it.

•Good to know! Did you have to provide your Washington ESD benefit statements or anything like that?

•Yeah they asked for my benefit verification letter from ESD and bank statements showing the deposits. Pretty standard stuff.

Actually dealing with DSHS for SNAP while on unemployment can be tricky because they want current income verification. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD for documents, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach ESD agents on the phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that. Is it legit? I've been trying to call ESD for weeks about getting my benefit verification letter.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. I used it last month when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status. Way better than spending hours on hold.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. why can't they just make it simple to apply for help when you need it??

•I get the frustration, but the programs are actually designed to work together. They just don't do a great job explaining it.

•yeah i guess. just wish there was like one application for everything instead of having to jump through hoops

One thing to keep in mind is that if your unemployment benefits end, you'll need to report that change to SNAP right away. Your benefit amount might actually increase once you're not getting UI anymore, depending on your other income.

Malik Thompson
•That's a good point I hadn't thought about. How quickly do you have to report changes like that?

Ravi Kapoor
•Within 10 days of the change. They're pretty strict about it so don't wait.

I applied for SNAP while getting unemployment last year and it was approved within like 2 weeks. The caseworker said unemployment actually makes the application easier because it shows you have a consistent income source, even if it's temporary.

•That makes sense actually. Did you get the emergency benefits or regular processing?
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Regular processing. Emergency benefits are usually only for people with no income at all.

Also don't forget about WIC if your kids are under 5. That's separate from SNAP but you can get both at the same time.

•My youngest is 3 so that might be worth looking into too. Is that also through Washington Connection?

•WIC is separate - you apply through local health departments. But definitely worth it for the kids.

Just to clarify the income calculation - they use your gross monthly income, not what you actually receive after taxes. So if your weekly UI benefit is $487, they'll calculate based on $487 x 4.33 = $2,109 monthly, not whatever you get after taxes are taken out.

Malik Thompson
•Good to know about the gross vs net calculation. Washington ESD does take out taxes unless you opt out right?

CosmicVoyager
•Correct, they withhold 10% federal tax by default unless you choose otherwise when you file your initial claim.

The hardest part for me was getting all the required documents together. Make sure you have your Social Security cards for all household members, proof of address, and bank statements. They're pretty thorough.

•Thanks for the heads up. I think I have most of that stuff already from when I applied for unemployment.

•Yeah they ask for similar documents but SNAP is way more detailed about household composition and expenses.

If you need help getting your benefit verification letter from Washington ESD for the SNAP application, seriously consider using Claimyr. I know I mentioned it before but it really saved me hours of frustration trying to get through on the phone. The system is just so overloaded.

Malik Thompson
•I might have to try that. I've called like 15 times and either get hung up on or put on hold forever.

•Same here! The ESD phone system is absolutely terrible. How much does Claimyr cost?

Also remember that if you're actively looking for work (which you have to do for UI anyway), you can use that as evidence of trying to improve your situation. SNAP caseworkers like to see that you're working toward self-sufficiency.

•That's a good point. I've been doing my job search requirements for Washington ESD so I have that documented.

Ravi Kapoor
•Exactly! Your WorkSourceWA activity log would be good evidence if they ask about job search efforts.

One more tip - if you qualify for SNAP, you might also qualify for reduced-cost internet through the Affordable Connectivity Program. Really helpful when you're trying to job search and manage your unemployment claim online.

•Oh wow I didn't know about that program. Every little bit helps when money's tight.

•Yeah it's like $30 off your internet bill each month. Super helpful for families on assistance.

this is all good info but man the system is just broken. you shouldn't have to jump through this many hoops just to feed your family

•I understand the frustration, but the programs do work when you know how to navigate them. The information is out there, it's just not always easy to find.

•i guess but it shouldn't be this complicated. normal people shouldn't need a manual to get help

Make sure when you apply for SNAP that you mention you're receiving unemployment benefits right in the application. Don't wait for them to ask - be upfront about it. Makes the whole process smoother.

•Good advice. I'll make sure to be completely transparent about my Washington ESD benefits.

NeonNinja
•Exactly. They'll find out anyway when they verify your income, so might as well be honest from the start.

I got SNAP while on unemployment and my benefits were actually higher than I expected. With two kids, your household size helps a lot with the calculation.
0 coins
Malik Thompson
•That's encouraging! Did you get the maximum benefit amount or somewhere in the middle?
0 coins
Zara Khan
•Somewhere in the middle but still like $400+ per month which really helped stretch the grocery budget.

Just apply online at Washington Connection and see what happens. Worst case they say no but at least you'll know for sure. The application itself is free and not too complicated.

•You're right, no harm in trying. I'll start the application this weekend when I have time to gather everything.

•Good luck! It's really not as scary as it seems once you get started.

My experience with SNAP while on UI was pretty smooth actually. The caseworker understood that unemployment is temporary and they were helpful about explaining how the benefits would change if my situation changed.
0 coins
Malik Thompson
•That's reassuring. I was worried they'd be judgmental about getting both unemployment and food assistance.
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
•Not at all! They see people in your situation all the time. It's what the programs are designed for.

Final word of advice - when you do get approved for SNAP, the benefits come on an EBT card that works like a debit card at grocery stores. Super easy to use and nobody really notices or cares. Don't let pride keep you from getting help you need for your kids.
0 coins
Malik Thompson
•Thank you for saying that. I definitely had some pride issues about applying but you're right - it's for the kids.

Freya Nielsen
•Exactly. You paid into these systems when you were working. Now they're there when you need them.

Really glad to see this discussion helped you out. And remember, if you run into any issues getting documents from Washington ESD for your SNAP application, Claimyr can help you actually talk to someone instead of waiting on hold forever. Worth checking out that demo video I mentioned earlier.
