Can you get CalFresh while on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm currently receiving unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and my weekly benefit amount is $462. My rent just went up and I'm barely making ends meet even with the UI payments. I heard someone mention CalFresh (food stamps) but I'm not sure if you can get both at the same time. Does anyone know if Washington ESD unemployment disqualifies you from getting CalFresh? I'm worried they'll count my UI benefits as too much income.

Yes, you can absolutely receive CalFresh while getting unemployment benefits! UI payments are counted as income when they determine your CalFresh amount, but they don't automatically disqualify you. The income limits for CalFresh are actually pretty reasonable - for a single person household it's around $2,265 gross monthly income in 2025.

•That's such a relief to hear! My UI comes out to about $2000 a month so I should be under the limit. Do you know where I apply for CalFresh?

•You can apply online through the Washington State DSHS website or visit your local Community Services Office. The application process is pretty straightforward.

I've been on both for 3 months now. They'll ask for your UI award letter and you'll need to report your weekly benefit amount. The CalFresh office understands that unemployment is temporary income, so they're pretty helpful about it.

•Did you have any issues getting approved? I'm nervous about the whole process.

•Not really, just took about 2 weeks to process. Make sure you have all your documents ready - ID, proof of address, bank statements, and your UI determination letter from Washington ESD.

I was struggling to get through to someone at DSHS to ask questions about my CalFresh application. The hold times were insane, just like trying to reach Washington ESD. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to government agencies. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling!

•Interesting, I never heard of that. Does it actually work for DSHS too or just unemployment offices?

•It worked great for me with both agencies. Way better than sitting on hold for 2+ hours just to get disconnected.

One thing to remember is that you'll need to report any changes in your UI benefits to the CalFresh office. If your unemployment gets extended or if you go back to work, you have to let them know within 10 days.

•Good point about reporting changes. What happens if I forget to report something right away?

•They might ask you to pay back some benefits if you were overpaid, but as long as it wasn't intentional they're usually understanding. Just report it as soon as you remember.

wait i thought you couldnt get food stamps if you have any income at all?? this is confusing

•No, that's a common misconception! CalFresh has income limits but having some income doesn't automatically disqualify you. They use a formula based on your household size and expenses.

•oh ok that makes more sense. maybe i should apply too then

The system is set up so that people can use multiple programs when they need help. There's no rule preventing you from getting CalFresh and unemployment at the same time - they serve different purposes.

•That's reassuring. I was worried there might be some conflict between the programs.

I got my CalFresh approved while on UI and it's been a huge help. The amount I get is adjusted based on my unemployment income, but I still get around $190 a month which covers most of my groceries.

•That would make such a difference for me right now. How long did the whole process take from application to getting your EBT card?

•About 3 weeks total. The application review took 2 weeks and then another week to get my card in the mail.

Just make sure you keep good records of everything. They'll want to see proof of your UI payments and any other income sources. I screenshot my weekly claim confirmations from Washington ESD just in case.

•Smart idea about keeping screenshots. I should start doing that with all my unemployment stuff.

The CalFresh office actually has a good understanding of unemployment situations since so many people apply for both programs together. They're used to working with UI recipients.

•That's good to know. I was worried they'd make it complicated.

Pro tip: apply for CalFresh online if you can. The online application is usually faster than going in person, and you can upload your documents right away instead of mailing them.

•I prefer doing things online anyway. Do you know if I can check the status of my application online too?

•Yes, you can log into your account and check the status. They also send text updates if you sign up for notifications.

If you do need to call DSHS for any reason during your CalFresh application, definitely try that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Made my life so much easier when I had questions about my case.

•I might have to try that. Last time I called DSHS I was on hold for 90 minutes and then got cut off right when someone answered.

Another thing - if you have any work search requirements for your UI benefits, make sure you're still meeting those while you're also dealing with the CalFresh application. Don't let one program interfere with the other.

•Good reminder. I do have to do 3 work search activities per week for Washington ESD. I'll make sure to keep that up.

The nice thing about CalFresh is that it's month-to-month, so if your unemployment situation changes, your food assistance can adjust accordingly. It's not like you're locked into anything long-term.

•That's why I always recommend using Claimyr for getting through to government agencies. Way less frustrating than sitting on hold forever.

Make sure you apply sooner rather than later. Even though you're getting UI benefits now, if something happens to your unemployment claim, you'll want to have CalFresh already in place as a backup.

•That's a really good point. I should probably apply this week.

One more thing - when you fill out the CalFresh application, be very accurate about your UI benefit amount. They'll verify it anyway, so there's no point in trying to estimate or round numbers.

•I'll make sure to use the exact amounts from my Washington ESD account. Thanks for the tip!

Just remember that getting CalFresh while on unemployment is totally normal and nothing to be embarrassed about. Both programs exist to help people during tough times.
