Can you get SNAP and unemployment benefits at the same time in Washington?
I just started receiving unemployment benefits from Washington ESD after losing my job last month. My UI payments are helping but I'm still struggling to afford groceries. A friend mentioned I might be able to get SNAP (food stamps) while on unemployment but I'm not sure if that's allowed. Has anyone here successfully gotten both SNAP and unemployment at the same time? I don't want to mess up my UI claim by applying for other benefits if it's not allowed.

Yes, you can absolutely get both SNAP and unemployment benefits in Washington. They're administered by different agencies - DSHS handles SNAP and Washington ESD handles unemployment. Your UI payments count as income for SNAP eligibility purposes, but you can still qualify depending on your benefit amount and household size.

•That's a relief! Do you know if I need to report my unemployment benefits when I apply for SNAP?

•Yes, you'll need to report your weekly UI amount as income on your SNAP application. They'll calculate your eligibility based on that.

I've been getting both for about 2 months now. The SNAP application asks about all income sources including unemployment. My weekly UI is $520 and I still qualified for $180/month in SNAP benefits as a single person household.

•That's helpful to know the actual numbers. I'm getting $465/week from Washington ESD so hopefully I'll still qualify.

•The income limits for SNAP are pretty reasonable, especially if you're used to having a regular paycheck. UI benefits are usually lower than your previous wages.

Just a heads up - when I applied for SNAP they wanted verification of my unemployment benefits. I had to provide a letter from Washington ESD showing my weekly benefit amount. You can get this through your SecureAccess Washington account.

•Good to know! I'll make sure to have that ready when I apply.

•I had trouble getting that letter from my Washington ESD account. The system kept timing out when I tried to generate it. Anyone else have this issue?

•I had the same problem with the Washington ESD website. If you can't get through online, you might want to try calling them directly. I know it's hard to get through, but there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to Washington ESD agents faster. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

wait I thought if you get one government benefit you can't get another? this doesn't sound right to me

•That's a common misconception. SNAP and unemployment are different programs with different purposes. UI replaces lost wages temporarily, while SNAP helps with food costs. You can receive both as long as you meet the eligibility requirements for each.

•You're thinking of some other benefit combinations that have restrictions. SNAP specifically allows unemployment income - it's actually one of the income sources they expect to see during economic downturns.

Been there! I got laid off in November and applied for both right away. The SNAP caseworker told me that unemployment benefits are considered 'countable income' but it doesn't disqualify you automatically. They look at your total household income vs the federal poverty guidelines.

•How long did it take to get approved for SNAP? I'm worried about the timing.

•About 3 weeks for me, but I applied online through Washington Connection. They have expedited processing if you're in emergency situations too.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you report any changes to your SNAP caseworker if your UI benefits change. Like if Washington ESD adjusts your weekly amount or if your claim ends. They need to know about income changes within 10 days.

•Good point. I'll make sure to keep track of any changes to my unemployment benefits.

•This is important. I forgot to report when my UI ended and they caught it during a review. Had to pay back some benefits but they were understanding since it wasn't intentional.

Pro tip: Apply for SNAP online through Washington Connection (washingtonconnection.org). It's way faster than going to the office and you can upload documents directly. The system connects to some Washington ESD databases so they might already have info about your UI claim.

•Thanks! I'll check that out. The online application sounds much easier.

•The online system is pretty good but sometimes it glitches. If you have problems, you can still print the application and mail it in.

I was in the same situation last year. Got approved for both and it made a huge difference in my budget. The SNAP benefits freed up cash that I could use for rent and utilities while the UI covered my basic expenses. Don't feel bad about using these programs - you paid into the system through your taxes and payroll deductions.

•Thank you for saying that. I do feel a bit weird about applying for SNAP but you're right, these programs exist for situations like this.

•Exactly. And using SNAP while on unemployment is super common. The programs are designed to work together to help people get back on their feet.

Just wanted to add that if you have kids, you might also qualify for free school meals while receiving SNAP. It's all connected through the same system.

•No kids, but good to know for others reading this thread.

Make sure you understand the work requirements for SNAP too. Since you're already doing job search activities for your UI claim through WorkSourceWA, you should be covered, but it's worth double-checking with your SNAP caseworker.

•I didn't think about that connection. I am doing my required job searches for Washington ESD, so hopefully that counts.

•It should definitely count. The job search requirements for UI are pretty comprehensive and include all the activities SNAP typically requires.

•I hear you, but once you get through the initial applications it's not too bad to maintain both. The monthly SNAP reporting is pretty straightforward.

•It is frustrating but the people at both agencies are usually pretty helpful if you call and explain your situation.

Update for anyone reading this - I successfully got both SNAP and unemployment. Applied online for SNAP and got approved within 2 weeks. My UI benefits count as income but I still qualified for $165/month in SNAP benefits. Really helps stretch the budget!

One more thing - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD for any documentation you need for SNAP, I had good luck with Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents faster. Really saved me time when I needed to get a benefit letter quickly.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues getting documents from Washington ESD.

•How much does Claimyr cost? I've been trying to get through to ESD for weeks about a different issue.

•I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it for me to avoid the frustration of calling ESD over and over. Check out their website at claimyr.com for current pricing.

Final advice - keep good records of everything. Save copies of your SNAP approval letter, your UI benefit statements, and any correspondence. Makes it easier if they ever need to review your case.

•Yes, documentation is key with any government benefits. Better to have too much paperwork than not enough.
