Can I get Washington ESD unemployment and food stamps at the same time?
I just lost my job last week and I'm trying to figure out if I can apply for both unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and food stamps (SNAP) at the same time. My savings are almost gone and I need help with both rent and groceries. Does getting unemployment affect my eligibility for food stamps? I'm really confused about how these programs work together and don't want to mess up either application.

Yes, you can absolutely apply for both! Unemployment benefits and SNAP (food stamps) are separate programs with different eligibility requirements. Your unemployment payments will count as income when they calculate your SNAP benefits, but it doesn't disqualify you. Many people receive both.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do I need to report my unemployment income when I apply for SNAP?

•Yes, you'll need to report all income including unemployment when you apply for SNAP. They'll factor it into your benefit calculation.

I'm doing both right now. Got laid off 2 months ago and have been getting unemployment while also receiving food stamps. The SNAP office will want to know about your unemployment benefits but like the other person said, it doesn't disqualify you.

•How much did your food stamp amount change once you started getting unemployment?

•It went down a little bit because unemployment counts as income, but I still get decent SNAP benefits. Better than nothing!

Just be prepared for the paperwork. You'll need to apply separately for each program and keep both updated on your status. For Washington ESD unemployment, you can apply online at esd.wa.gov. For SNAP you'll need to contact DSHS.

•Do I need to wait for my unemployment to be approved before applying for SNAP?

Mateo Rodriguez
•No, you can apply for both at the same time. Just make sure to update SNAP once your unemployment gets approved.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I was applying for unemployment. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. If you run into that problem, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

GalaxyGuardian
•Yeah, they handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get my unemployment sorted out.

ugh the whole system is so confusing!! why cant they just have one application for everything instead of making us jump through hoops with different agencies

•I know it's frustrating, but they're run by different agencies with different funding sources. That's why you have to apply separately.

•still annoying though. like when you're already stressed about money the last thing you want is more paperwork

Make sure you understand the work search requirements for unemployment too. You'll need to be actively looking for work and log your job search activities. This might actually help with both programs since SNAP also has work requirements in some cases.

•Good point. What exactly do I need to do for the work search requirement?

Yuki Tanaka
•You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. You can do this through WorkSourceWA or keep your own records.

One thing to watch out for is timing. If you get a lump sum payment from your employer (like vacation payout or severance), that might affect both programs differently. Make sure to report everything accurately.

•I did get some vacation pay when I was laid off. Will that delay my benefits?

Carmen Diaz
•It might delay your unemployment start date depending on how much it was. For SNAP it would just count as income for that month.

If you need help navigating the Washington ESD system or have questions about your claim, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. It's been a lifesaver for getting actual answers from ESD staff instead of just reading confusing website information.

•Is there a cost for using that service?

•There is a fee but honestly it was worth it to avoid the hours of calling and getting hung up on. Much less stressful.

Don't forget that you can also look into other assistance programs while you're at it. There might be utility assistance, rental assistance, or food banks in your area that can help stretch your budget further.

•That's a good idea. Any suggestions on where to look for those programs?

•Check with 211 (dial 2-1-1) or visit wa211.org. They have a database of local assistance programs.

I was worried about the same thing when I lost my job. Turns out you can get both and it really helps during the transition. Just be honest on all your applications and keep good records of everything.

•Thanks for the reassurance. This whole situation is pretty overwhelming.

•I totally understand. It gets easier once you get into the routine of managing both programs. Hang in there!

Quick tip: when you file your weekly unemployment claims, make sure you're reporting any odd jobs or side work accurately. SNAP also wants to know about any income changes, so keep both programs updated.

•What if I do some freelance work while on unemployment?

•You can still do some work while on unemployment, but you need to report all earnings. It might reduce your weekly benefit but won't necessarily disqualify you.

the snap application process is actually pretty straightforward compared to unemployment. you can apply online through washington connection or go to a DSHS office

•Is the online application better than going in person?

Mei Zhang
•online is usually faster and you can upload documents easier. but if you need help with the application going in person might be better

Something I learned the hard way - make copies of everything! Both programs will ask for documentation and it's easier if you have everything organized from the start.

•What kind of documents do they usually want?

Liam McConnell
•ID, social security card, proof of income loss, bank statements, rent receipts. Basically anything that shows your financial situation.

Another consideration is that if you're approved for both programs, you'll have ongoing reporting requirements for each. Unemployment requires weekly claims and SNAP typically requires monthly or periodic reports depending on your situation.

•How do I keep track of all these requirements?

Mateo Rodriguez
•I recommend setting up calendar reminders for all your deadlines. Missing a weekly claim or SNAP report can cause problems with your benefits.

The good news is that both programs are designed to help people in exactly your situation. Don't feel bad about using them - that's what they're there for!

•Thank you, I needed to hear that. It's hard not to feel embarrassed about needing help.

•Absolutely no shame in getting help when you need it. You've probably paid into these systems through your taxes anyway.

Just want to add that if you have any issues with your Washington ESD claim getting stuck or need to talk to someone about your specific situation, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it got me connected to an ESD agent who cleared up my adjudication issue.

•Good to know there are options if I run into problems. Hopefully everything goes smoothly though.

•Definitely hope it goes smooth for you! But it's nice to know there's a backup plan if you need it.

One more thing - if you have kids, make sure to mention that on your SNAP application. Households with children often qualify for higher benefit amounts.

Been there, done that. Having both unemployment and SNAP made a huge difference during my job search. Gave me the breathing room I needed to find something good instead of just taking the first thing available.

Zara Ahmed
•That's encouraging to hear. How long did it take you to find something?

Fatima Al-Maktoum
•About 4 months, but I was able to be selective and found a job that paid better than my previous one. The benefits really helped me not panic and make bad decisions.
