Can you get EBT while on unemployment benefits in Washington?
I'm receiving Washington ESD unemployment benefits right now and wondering if I can also apply for EBT food assistance? My UI payments barely cover rent and I'm struggling with groceries. Does anyone know if being on unemployment disqualifies you from SNAP benefits or if there are income limits I need to worry about? I don't want to mess up my unemployment claim by applying for other assistance.

You can absolutely get EBT while on unemployment! SNAP and UI are completely separate programs. Your unemployment income will count toward SNAP income limits, but it doesn't disqualify you automatically. Many people receive both at the same time.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do you know what the income limits are for SNAP in Washington?

•For 2025, it's around $2,400/month gross for a single person household, but the exact amount depends on your expenses too.

been getting both for 3 months now, no issues at all. just make sure to report your UI payments when you apply for food stamps

•Good to know! Did you apply online or go to an office?

•online through washington connection, way easier than dealing with offices

Actually had this exact situation last year. The SNAP office needs to know about your unemployment income but it won't automatically disqualify you. They look at your total household income and expenses. If you're barely making ends meet on UI alone, you'll probably qualify for at least some SNAP benefits.

•That makes sense. I'm definitely struggling on just unemployment payments. How long did your SNAP application take to process?

•About 3 weeks from application to getting my EBT card. Make sure you have all your Washington ESD documentation ready when you apply.

Wait, I thought you couldn't get both? My cousin told me applying for food stamps would mess up his unemployment claim somehow. Now I'm confused...

•Your cousin got bad information. SNAP and unemployment are totally separate federal and state programs. One doesn't affect the other at all.

•Wow okay, I need to tell him this! He's been struggling with food costs for no reason.

Been trying to reach someone at DSHS about my SNAP application for weeks. Phone lines are always busy, just like Washington ESD. So frustrating trying to get help with anything these days. If anyone knows a better way to contact them, please let me know!

•I had the same problem contacting DSHS. For unemployment issues though, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah, it automatically redials and waits in line for you. Got connected to an agent in about 45 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call myself.

Just want to add that you should apply for SNAP as soon as possible if you're struggling. There's no shame in needing help, and that's exactly what these programs are for. Your unemployment payments might make you eligible for expedited SNAP benefits too if your income is low enough.

•What are expedited benefits?

•If you qualify, you can get your EBT card within 7 days instead of waiting weeks. Usually for people with very low income or high expenses.

One thing to remember - when you report your monthly income for SNAP, make sure you're using your gross unemployment amount before taxes are taken out. I made that mistake initially and had to resubmit paperwork.

•Good tip! I would have definitely used the net amount without thinking about it.

•Wait, they take taxes out of unemployment? I thought that was optional?

Julia Hall
•It is optional, but if you choose to have taxes withheld, SNAP still wants to know your gross amount.

I work at a food bank and see this question all the time. Unemployment recipients are absolutely eligible for SNAP benefits. The programs complement each other - UI helps with basic living expenses while SNAP specifically helps with food costs. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

•Thank you for doing that work! It's good to hear from someone who sees this situation regularly.

Quick question - if I'm on standby unemployment, does that change anything for SNAP eligibility? I'm temporarily laid off but expect to return to work in a few months.

•Standby status doesn't change SNAP eligibility. Your current income situation is what matters for food assistance, not your employment status.

•Perfect, that's what I was hoping to hear. Thanks!

Does anyone know if getting SNAP affects your Washington ESD job search requirements? I don't want to complicate my weekly claims by adding another government program.

Kolton Murphy
•SNAP has its own work requirements that are separate from Washington ESD's job search requirements. Getting food assistance won't change what you need to do for your unemployment claim.

•That's a relief. The job search requirements are already stressful enough without worrying about conflicting rules.

I applied for both programs around the same time last year. Pro tip: keep copies of all your Washington ESD documents because SNAP will want to see your unemployment determination letter and payment history. Having everything organized made the process much smoother.

•Great advice! I'll gather all my Washington ESD paperwork before starting the SNAP application.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you report any changes in your unemployment status to SNAP too. If your benefits end or you go back to work, SNAP needs to know within 10 days or you could end up with an overpayment situation.

•Good point! I'll make a note to update both programs if anything changes.

•Yeah, SNAP overpayments are no joke. They'll want that money back even if it was an honest mistake.

Been on both programs for months and honestly don't know how I would have survived without them. The combination of UI and SNAP actually gives you a fighting chance to get back on your feet without going into debt.

•That's exactly what I'm hoping for. Just need enough support to get through this rough patch.

If you're having trouble reaching DSHS about your SNAP application, I've heard good things about that Claimyr service for getting through to government agencies. Not sure if they handle DSHS calls too, but worth checking out if you're stuck trying to reach someone about your benefits.

•I think Claimyr is specifically for Washington ESD unemployment calls, but yeah, they're really helpful for that. Saved me so much time when I had issues with my claim.

•Ah okay, thanks for clarifying. Still good to know about for unemployment stuff though.

Don't forget about WIC too if you have young kids. You can potentially get unemployment, SNAP, and WIC all at the same time if you qualify for each program individually.

One last thing - if you're approved for SNAP while on unemployment, you might also qualify for reduced-cost utilities through LIHEAP. It's worth looking into all the assistance programs available, not just food and unemployment.

•I had no idea about utility assistance programs. Thanks for mentioning that!

This thread is incredibly helpful! I'm in a similar situation and have been hesitant to apply for SNAP because I wasn't sure how it would interact with my unemployment benefits. Reading everyone's experiences has given me the confidence to move forward with the application. It's reassuring to know that so many people have successfully received both types of assistance without any issues. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences - it really makes a difference for those of us navigating these systems for the first time.
