Does unemployment count as income for Washington food assistance programs?
I'm currently receiving Washington ESD unemployment benefits and need to apply for food assistance. Does my UI count as income when they calculate my eligibility? I'm getting about $420 per week from Washington ESD and wondering if this will disqualify me from getting food stamps. Has anyone been through this process while on unemployment?

Yes, unemployment benefits from Washington ESD do count as income for SNAP (food stamps) calculations. However, that doesn't automatically disqualify you - they look at your total household income and size. $420/week for a single person might still qualify you for some benefits.

•Thanks for clarifying! I'm a single person household so hopefully I still qualify for something.

•definitely apply anyway, the worst they can say is no and you might be surprised

I went through this exact situation last year. Washington ESD unemployment is considered unearned income for SNAP purposes. You'll need to report it when you apply, but the income limits are higher than most people think. For 2025, a single person can make up to around $1,580/month gross and still qualify.

•That's helpful to know the actual income limits. I think I should still qualify then since $420/week is about $1,680/month.

•Actually double-check those current limits on the DSHS website since they can change. But you're right in the ballpark.

When I applied for food stamps while on unemployment, I had trouble getting through to DSHS to ask questions about my application. The phone system is almost as bad as trying to reach Washington ESD! I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to someone at DSHS. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that service before but sounds useful. Did it actually work for reaching DSHS?

•Yeah it worked great! Got through to someone within an hour instead of calling all day. They help with Washington ESD calls too which is handy.

•Interesting, I might try that. I've been trying to reach someone about my food stamp case for weeks.

Just make sure you report your unemployment accurately on the SNAP application. They'll verify it anyway so being honest upfront saves headaches later. I made the mistake of estimating low and had to pay back benefits.

•Good point about being accurate. I have all my Washington ESD payment records so I can give exact amounts.

•yeah they cross-reference everything these days, better to be exact

Does anyone know if the $300 weekly addition from the federal government counts too? Or just the base Washington ESD amount?
0 coins
Ava Garcia
•There's no $300 federal addition anymore - that ended in 2021. Just your regular Washington ESD weekly benefit amount counts as income now.

•Oh right, I was thinking of the old pandemic benefits. Thanks for the correction.

I'm in a similar situation but haven't applied for food stamps yet. Do they make you do job search requirements for SNAP while you're already doing them for Washington ESD unemployment?

Zainab Ismail
•No, if you're receiving UI benefits and meeting Washington ESD job search requirements, you're typically exempt from SNAP work requirements. But mention this when you apply.

•That's a relief! The Washington ESD job search requirements are already keeping me busy enough.

The application process is pretty straightforward online. Just gather your Washington ESD benefit statements and any other income documents. Takes about 30 days to process usually.

•Is there a way to check application status online or do you have to call?

CosmicCommander
•Yes, Washington has an online portal where you can check your case status. Much easier than calling.

Honestly the whole system is confusing. I was on unemployment and food stamps at the same time and constantly worried I was doing something wrong. The caseworkers aren't always helpful either.

•I feel you on that. Sometimes I think they make it confusing on purpose to discourage people from applying.

•Don't let that stop you though - if you qualify you should definitely apply. These programs exist for a reason.

Quick tip - when you report your unemployment income, use your gross amount before taxes are taken out. That's what they want to see for SNAP calculations.

•Good to know! I was wondering if they wanted gross or net amounts.

Isabella Ferreira
•yeah always gross income for these applications

I had to reapply for food stamps when my unemployment ended and I got a job. The income reporting requirements are ongoing, not just at application. Keep that in mind.

•Thanks for the heads up. So I'll need to report when my Washington ESD benefits end and I find work?

Ravi Sharma
•Exactly. Any income changes need to be reported within 10 days I think. Check the specific timeframe when you apply.

Does unemployment from Washington ESD count the same as wages for SNAP? Or is there a difference in how they calculate it?
0 coins
Ava Garcia
•It's all counted as income but unemployment is considered 'unearned income' while wages are 'earned income'. For SNAP purposes, both count toward your income limits though.

NebulaNomad
•Ah okay, so the distinction doesn't really matter for eligibility purposes then.

I applied for emergency food stamps while waiting for my Washington ESD claim to get approved. They have expedited processing if you qualify, which might be worth looking into.

Dmitry Ivanov
•What qualifies you for expedited processing? I might need that since I'm running low on money.

Freya Thomsen
•I think it's if your income is really low and you have less than $150 in cash/bank. They can approve you within 7 days instead of 30.

Just wanted to add that I used Claimyr to get through to DSHS about my food stamp case and it was totally worth it. Saved me hours of calling and redialing. The website is claimyr.com if anyone needs it.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's really reasonable considering how much time it saves. Way better than spending all day trying to get through on your own.

For what it's worth, being on unemployment actually helped my SNAP application because it showed I was actively looking for work and had a legitimate reason for low income.

•That's encouraging to hear! I was worried they might view unemployment negatively.

Make sure you have your Social Security card and ID ready when you apply. They're pretty strict about documentation requirements.

One thing to keep in mind is that SNAP benefits are loaded onto an EBT card, not direct deposit like Washington ESD unemployment. Just so you know what to expect.
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Thanks! Do they mail you the EBT card or do you pick it up somewhere?
0 coins
Luca Esposito
•They mail it to you. Takes about 7-10 days after approval usually.

I was on both unemployment and food stamps for about 6 months. The monthly SNAP amount helped stretch my Washington ESD benefits a lot further. Definitely worth applying even if you think you might not qualify.

Pro tip: if you get approved for SNAP, some stores double coupons when you use EBT. Makes your benefits go even further.

Dmitry Ivanov
•I didn't know that was a thing! I'll have to look into which stores around here do that.

Aisha Abdullah
•Not all stores do it but worth checking. Some farmer's markets match EBT spending too.

Has anyone had issues with DSHS asking for verification of your Washington ESD unemployment? I'm worried they might delay my application.
0 coins
Zainab Ismail
•They usually just need a copy of your benefit determination letter from Washington ESD or recent payment history. Pretty standard verification.

Ethan Wilson
•OK that's not too bad. I can get that from my Washington ESD online account.

Bottom line - yes your unemployment counts as income but don't let that stop you from applying. I qualified for $180/month in SNAP benefits while receiving Washington ESD unemployment and it made a huge difference.

Just wanted to add that you can apply for SNAP online through the Washington Connection portal, which is much easier than going to a DSHS office in person. The online application walks you through everything step by step and you can upload your Washington ESD documents directly. I found it way less intimidating than I expected, and you can save your progress if you need to gather more paperwork.
