Does Washington ESD unemployment count as income for SNAP benefits?
I'm currently receiving UI benefits from Washington ESD and thinking about applying for food stamps (SNAP). Does my weekly unemployment payment count as income when they calculate SNAP eligibility? I'm getting about $520 per week right now and not sure if that would disqualify me or if there's some kind of exemption. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, unemployment benefits do count as income for SNAP calculations. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you won't qualify - it depends on your household size and other factors. $520/week is about $2,080/month, so you'd need to check the SNAP income limits for your household size.

•Thanks for the info. It's just me so I guess I need to look up the limits for a 1-person household.

•For 2025, the gross income limit for 1 person is $2,430/month, so you might still qualify depending on your other income and deductions.

I went through this exact situation last year when I was on Washington ESD benefits. UI payments definitely count as income, but I was still able to get SNAP because my unemployment was temporary and I had no other income. The application process was pretty straightforward through the Washington state DSHS website.

•How long did it take to get approved? I'm worried about the timing since my UI claim might end soon.

•It took about 3 weeks for me to get approved. I'd recommend applying sooner rather than later since the process can take a while.

Just to add - they'll want to see your Washington ESD payment history as part of the application. You can download your payment summary from your SecureAccess Washington account to include with your SNAP application. Make sure it shows all your recent payments clearly.

•Good tip! I didn't think about needing documentation from my ESD account.

•Yes, having all your documentation ready speeds up the process significantly. They need proof of all income sources.

I'm dealing with something similar but my Washington ESD claim has been stuck in adjudication for weeks. I can't even get through to anyone to find out what's happening with my benefits. How are you supposed to apply for SNAP when you don't even know if your UI will be approved?

•That's so frustrating! Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it from someone here and it actually helped me get through to a real person at Washington ESD. They have a service that helps you reach agents by phone - check out claimyr.com and they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•For SNAP purposes, you can still apply even if your UI claim is pending. They'll ask about expected income and you can explain the situation.

Wait I thought unemployment didn't count for food stamps? My cousin told me it was exempt because it's temporary assistance...

Nia Harris
•Unfortunately that's not correct. UI benefits have always counted as income for SNAP. Your cousin might be thinking of some other program or maybe got bad information.

•Ugh that sucks. I was hoping to apply for both when my job ended next month.

The silver lining is that Washington state has some of the more generous SNAP benefits and income limits compared to other states. Plus if you're unemployed, you might qualify for expedited processing which can get you benefits faster.

•What qualifies you for expedited processing?

•Generally if your monthly income is under $150 or your housing costs are more than your income plus cash on hand. Being unemployed often puts you in that category.

This whole system is so confusing. You lose your job, finally get unemployment after jumping through hoops with Washington ESD, then find out it might disqualify you from other help. Makes no sense.

•I understand the frustration, but SNAP income limits are actually designed to help people who are struggling financially, which includes those on unemployment. The fact that UI counts as income doesn't mean you can't get SNAP - it just means they consider your total financial picture.

•I guess that makes sense when you put it that way. Still frustrating though.

Pro tip: when you apply for SNAP, also ask about other programs you might qualify for like LIHEAP for utility assistance or the Washington Apple Health (Medicaid). Sometimes there are programs that complement each other.

•Good idea. I hadn't thought about other programs but I could probably use help with utilities too.

Does anyone know if the SNAP office communicates with Washington ESD at all? Like do they verify your UI payments directly or just go by what you report?

Mateo Gonzalez
•They can verify income through various databases, but it's always better to be upfront and provide documentation yourself. Don't try to hide UI income - it will likely be discovered anyway.

•Oh I wasn't planning to hide it, just wondering about the verification process. Thanks!

I got SNAP while on unemployment last year and it was a huge help. Don't let the fact that UI counts as income discourage you from applying - you might be surprised at what you qualify for.

•That's encouraging to hear. I'm definitely going to apply.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I used it again this week to check on my job search requirement questions and it worked great. Really worth it if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone.

•Update: I tried Claimyr and finally got through to someone about my adjudication! They explained what was holding up my claim. Definitely recommend it.

Quick question - if your UI benefits end while you're receiving SNAP, do you need to report that change right away?
0 coins
Nia Harris
•Yes, you're supposed to report income changes within 10 days. When your UI ends, that's a significant change that could affect your SNAP benefits (possibly increase them).

CosmicCadet
•Thanks, I'll make sure to report it when my benefits end next month.

The income limits change every year too, so what qualified last year might not qualify this year and vice versa. Always worth checking the current limits on the DSHS website.

•Good point. I'll make sure I'm looking at 2025 limits.

Been on both UI and SNAP before - the biggest thing is just being honest about your income and situation. The caseworkers are generally pretty helpful and want to connect you with benefits you qualify for.

•That's reassuring. I was worried it would be a hassle.

•It's definitely some paperwork but not as bad as the Washington ESD application process was!

Don't forget about the work requirements for SNAP too. If you're unemployed and looking for work, you should be able to meet them, but it's something to be aware of.

Mateo Gonzalez
•Good point. The work requirements are similar to the job search requirements for UI - you need to be actively looking for work and able to work.

I had to use Claimyr twice last month - once for a question about my weekly claim and once to resolve an issue with my standby status. Both times I got through to someone who could actually help instead of just getting hung up on.

•Seems like a lot of people have had success with that service. Good to know it's reliable.

Also remember that even if you don't qualify for regular SNAP, you might qualify for emergency SNAP if you're in a crisis situation. Worth asking about if you're really struggling.

•I didn't know there was emergency SNAP. That's good to know as a backup option.

The whole process is easier if you apply online through the Washington Connection website rather than going to an office. You can upload all your documents right there.

•I'll definitely do it online then. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone!

One more thing - keep copies of everything you submit for SNAP, including your Washington ESD payment records. You might need them later for recertification or if there are any questions about your case.

•Will do. I've learned to keep copies of everything after dealing with Washington ESD!

Hope it works out for you! Having both UI and SNAP really helped me get through a tough period last year. The extra food assistance made a huge difference in my budget.
