Can you get food stamps while on unemployment in Washington?
I just started receiving unemployment benefits from Washington ESD and I'm wondering if I can also apply for food stamps (SNAP)? My UI payments are only $380 a week which isn't enough to cover all my expenses. I heard somewhere that you might not be eligible for food assistance if you're getting unemployment but I'm not sure if that's true. Has anyone been in this situation before? Do I need to report my unemployment income when applying for SNAP benefits?

Yes you can definitely get SNAP while on unemployment! Your UI benefits count as income but they might still qualify you depending on your household size and total income. You'll need to report your weekly unemployment amount when you apply.

•That's a relief! Do you know if there's a specific income limit I need to stay under?

•It varies by household size but for a single person I think it's around $1,400 monthly gross income. Your $380/week would be about $1,520 monthly so you might be close to the limit.

I got approved for food stamps while collecting unemployment last year. The DSHS office was pretty helpful with the application process. Just make sure you have all your unemployment documentation ready.

•What kind of unemployment documentation did they ask for? Just my benefit statement?

•They wanted my most recent UI payment history and a letter from Washington ESD showing my weekly benefit amount. You can get both from your online account.

When I was having trouble getting through to DSHS about my SNAP application while on unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected faster. They can help with government agency calls - check out claimyr.com. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work for getting through to busy phone lines?

•Yeah it worked for me when I needed to talk to someone about my case. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

The income limits for SNAP are higher than most people think. Even if your unemployment puts you slightly over the gross income limit, you might still qualify based on net income after deductions.

•What kind of deductions do they allow?

•Things like rent, utilities, medical expenses if you're over 60 or disabled. They also have a standard deduction that everyone gets.

Be careful about the work requirements though. If you're able-bodied and between 18-49 without kids, there are time limits on how long you can get SNAP benefits unless you're working or in training at least 20 hours a week.

•Wait, does actively looking for work while on unemployment count towards that requirement?

•I'm not 100% sure but I don't think job searching alone counts. You'd need to check with DSHS about whether unemployment job search requirements satisfy the SNAP work requirement.

•Actually in Washington state, the ABAWD work requirements are waived in most counties due to high unemployment rates. Check the DSHS website for your specific county.

You should apply ASAP because SNAP benefits are usually processed within 30 days but can be expedited if you qualify for emergency processing. Don't wait until your unemployment runs out.

•How do you qualify for expedited processing?

GalacticGladiator
•If your monthly income is less than $150 or your rent/mortgage is more than your income plus cash on hand, you might qualify for expedited service within 7 days.

I applied online through the Washington Connection website and it was pretty straightforward. You can upload your documents directly instead of mailing them in.

•That sounds way easier than going to an office. Did you have any issues with the online application?

•No major issues, just make sure you have good scans of your documents. The system can be picky about file formats.

Don't forget that if you get SNAP benefits, you'll need to report any changes in your unemployment status. If your UI benefits increase or decrease, or if you find a job, you have to let DSHS know within 10 days.

•What happens if you forget to report a change?

•They could reduce your benefits or make you pay back any overpayments. It's better to report changes as soon as they happen.

One thing to keep in mind is that your SNAP benefits might be reduced once you report your unemployment income, but you'll likely still get something. Even $50-100 a month in food assistance helps.

•Yeah every little bit helps right now. I'm just trying to make ends meet until I find another job.

•Exactly, and food assistance frees up money for other essential expenses like rent and utilities.

Also worth noting that SNAP benefits come on an EBT card that works like a debit card at most grocery stores. You can't use it for prepared foods or non-food items, but it covers most groceries.

NebulaNinja
•Can you use it at places like Walmart or Target for groceries?

Javier Gomez
•Yes, anywhere that accepts EBT. Most major grocery stores and even some farmers markets accept it now.

If you need help reaching DSHS to ask questions about your SNAP application, Claimyr really does work well for getting through busy government phone lines. Saved me hours of waiting on hold when I had questions about my case.

•I might need to try that if I run into issues with my application. Thanks for the suggestion!

Remember that receiving SNAP benefits won't affect your unemployment benefits at all. They're completely separate programs administered by different agencies.

•Good to know! I was worried there might be some kind of conflict between the two programs.

Chloe Taylor
•Nope, lots of people receive both. The programs are designed to work together to help people get back on their feet.

Make sure you keep copies of everything you submit for your SNAP application. If there are any issues or they need additional documentation, you'll want to have everything organized.

•That's good advice. I learned that lesson the hard way with my unemployment application!

•Yeah government agencies love their paperwork. Better to have too much documentation than not enough.

If you get approved for SNAP, you'll also want to look into other assistance programs like LIHEAP for utility bills or the WIC program if you have young children. Washington has a lot of support programs available.

•I don't have kids but I'll definitely look into utility assistance. My electric bill has been brutal this winter.

•LIHEAP can help with heating bills especially. The application process is similar to SNAP through DSHS.

One last tip - if you're denied SNAP benefits for any reason, you have the right to appeal the decision. Don't just accept a denial without understanding why it happened.

NebulaNinja
•How long do you have to file an appeal?
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
•I think it's 90 days from the date of the denial notice, but double check the paperwork they send you for the exact deadline.

Overall it's definitely worth applying. The worst they can say is no, and if you qualify, it can really help stretch your unemployment benefits further while you're job hunting.

Just wanted to add that if you're struggling to get through to DSHS by phone, you can also visit a local Community Service Office in person. Sometimes it's faster than waiting on hold, and they can help you with the application right there. You can find office locations on the DSHS website. Also, many food banks don't require any paperwork and can help supplement your groceries while you're waiting for SNAP approval - just something to consider as a temporary solution.

•That's really helpful advice about the Community Service Offices! I didn't even think about going in person. Do you know if they have weekend hours at any locations, or are they all weekday only? And thanks for mentioning food banks - I've been hesitant to use them but maybe I should look into it while I'm waiting for the SNAP application to process.
