Can you apply for food stamps and unemployment Washington ESD at the same time?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job and I'm wondering if I can apply for both Washington ESD unemployment benefits and food stamps (SNAP) at the same time? I have two kids and I'm really worried about making ends meet. Will applying for food stamps affect my unemployment claim or vice versa? I don't want to mess anything up but I need help with groceries while I'm looking for work.

Yes, you can absolutely apply for both! They're completely separate programs. Washington ESD handles unemployment and DSHS handles SNAP benefits. One doesn't affect the other at all.

•Thanks! I was worried they might count against each other somehow. Do I apply for SNAP online too?

•Yep, you can apply for SNAP online through the Washington Connection portal. Much easier than going in person.

I've been on both for 3 months now. No issues whatsoever. Just make sure you report your unemployment income on your SNAP application - they need to know about all income sources.

•Good point about reporting the unemployment income. Do I report it even if I haven't started receiving benefits yet?

•I would mention that you've applied for unemployment but aren't receiving it yet. Better to be upfront about everything.

Had trouble getting through to both agencies when I applied last year. If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, I'll check that out if I have trouble reaching Washington ESD. How long did your unemployment claim take to process?

•Mine took about 2 weeks but that was pretty standard. Some people wait longer if there are complications.

Just so you know, when you apply for SNAP they'll ask about job search activities too. Make sure you're keeping track of your job search for both programs since Washington ESD requires that for unemployment benefits.

•I didn't know SNAP cared about job searching too. Do they have the same requirements as Washington ESD?

•Not exactly the same but they do want to see you're actively looking for work if you're able-bodied and don't have young kids.

The income limits for SNAP are pretty generous, especially with kids. Even if you get unemployment benefits, you'll probably still qualify for some SNAP assistance.

•That's reassuring. I was worried I'd have to choose one or the other.

•Yeah, they're designed to work together. The whole safety net thing.

Make sure you file your weekly claims with Washington ESD on time even if you're dealing with SNAP applications. Missing those weekly filings can mess up your unemployment benefits.

•Good reminder! I haven't even filed my initial claim yet. Should I do that first before applying for SNAP?

•I'd do the unemployment claim first since there's usually a waiting period. Get that process started ASAP.

Been there with two kids too. It's stressful but both programs really help. Don't feel bad about using the assistance - you paid into unemployment through your job and SNAP is there for exactly this situation.

•Thank you for saying that. I do feel a bit weird about it but you're right, I've been working and paying taxes for years.

•Exactly! Use every resource available while you're looking for work. That's what they're for.

Just a heads up - the SNAP interview can be done over the phone now which is convenient. Much easier than having to go to an office with kids in tow.

•Oh that's great! I was dreading having to drag the kids to appointments.

One more thing about Washington ESD - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication or you need to check on status, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent same day when I'd been trying to call for weeks.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking their site for current info. For me it was worth it just to stop wasting time on hold.

Both applications ask for a lot of the same documents - pay stubs, bank statements, etc. Might as well gather everything at once and apply for both.

•Smart thinking! I'll get all my paperwork together this weekend.

Don't forget about WIC if your kids are young enough. That's another program that works alongside SNAP and unemployment.

•My youngest is 3 so I think she'd qualify. I'll look into that too.

•Definitely worth it. WIC covers milk, eggs, cereal, stuff like that for kids.

The Washington ESD website has a good FAQ section about working while on unemployment too, in case you pick up any part-time work while job hunting.

Olivia Kay
•I was wondering about that. Can you work part-time and still get unemployment?

ApolloJackson
•Yes but you have to report all earnings and they'll reduce your weekly benefit amount accordingly.

Same boat here with kids. Applied for both last month and it's been a lifesaver. The SNAP benefits loaded onto the card within a week of approval.

Olivia Kay
•That's faster than I expected! How long did your unemployment take to start?

Isabella Russo
•About 3 weeks but I had to verify some employment info which slowed it down a bit.

Pro tip: when you do your SNAP phone interview, have all your documents ready. They'll ask about rent, utilities, childcare expenses, all that stuff.

•I'll make a list of everything I need. Thanks for the heads up!

If you're having trouble with either application, there are community assistance programs that can help you navigate the process. Check with local food banks - they often have people who know both systems.

•Good idea. I know there's a food bank near me that I could probably ask.

The key thing is getting both applications submitted as soon as possible. There's no downside to applying and seeing what you qualify for.

•You're right. I'll start the unemployment application tonight and SNAP tomorrow.

Keep copies of everything you submit for both programs. Sometimes they ask for the same documents again and it's easier if you already have copies ready.

•Will do. I learned that lesson the hard way with other paperwork before.

Both programs have been really helpful for my family. Don't hesitate to use them - that's exactly what they're designed for when people are between jobs.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice and encouragement. I feel much better about moving forward with both applications.

One last thing - make sure you understand the work search requirements for Washington ESD unemployment. You'll need to apply for jobs and keep a log of your activities.

Olivia Kay
•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Jibriel Kohn
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check the Washington ESD website for the current requirements.

Also worth noting that if you get approved for SNAP, you might be eligible for discounted internet and phone services too. Helps with the job search.
