Can you get TANF and Washington ESD unemployment benefits at the same time?

I'm in a really tough spot financially and wondering if I can apply for both TANF cash assistance and unemployment benefits through Washington ESD at the same time? My unemployment ran out last month but I'm still looking for work. Has anyone done this before or know if there are rules against getting both? I have two kids and really need the help while job searching.

Yes, you can receive both TANF and unemployment benefits in Washington state, but there are some important things to know. The TANF program through DSHS has work requirements that you'll need to meet, and they'll coordinate with Washington ESD about your job search activities. Make sure you report your unemployment benefits to DSHS when you apply for TANF.

Thank you! Do you know if the TANF work requirements conflict with the Washington ESD job search requirements? I don't want to mess up either program.

They actually complement each other pretty well. Both programs want you actively seeking work, so your job search activities for Washington ESD usually count toward TANF requirements too.

I've been getting both for about 3 months now. The tricky part is that TANF counts your unemployment benefits as income, so it might reduce how much cash assistance you get. But every little bit helps when you have kids to feed.

0 coins

That makes sense about the income counting against TANF. Did you have any trouble coordinating between the two agencies?

0 coins

Not really, but I had to be super careful about reporting everything correctly to both DSHS and Washington ESD. Any changes in one program need to be reported to the other.

Just went through this process last year. You definitely can get both, but be prepared for lots of paperwork and appointments. DSHS will want to know about your unemployment claim status, and Washington ESD needs to know about your TANF participation for their records.

How long did the TANF application process take for you? I'm worried about the gap between when my unemployment ended and when TANF might start.

0 coins

TANF took about 3 weeks to get approved, but they can sometimes expedite if you have urgent needs. Make sure to mention you have kids when you apply.

If you're having trouble reaching either agency to get answers about this, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my benefits. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status! This might be really helpful.

0 coins

Never heard of this but might be worth trying. The phone lines are impossible these days.

Important thing to remember - if you're getting unemployment benefits, you have to be available and able to work. TANF has work requirements too, but they're different. Make sure you understand both sets of rules so you don't accidentally violate either program.

0 coins

Good point about the availability requirements. I assume childcare issues could affect both programs?

0 coins

Yes, both programs have provisions for childcare barriers, but you need to document everything properly with both agencies.

0 coins

Been there! The key is staying organized with all your documentation. Keep records of every job application, every contact with both agencies, and every form you submit. It's a lot to manage but worth it when you need the support.

0 coins

That's great advice. I'll start a folder system to keep everything straight.

0 coins

Also take photos of any paperwork before you submit it. Agencies sometimes lose things and you'll want backup copies.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if you get a job while receiving both benefits, you need to report it to BOTH agencies right away. The rules about how much you can earn while keeping benefits are different for each program.

0 coins

That's something I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks for the heads up!

Exactly. And if you get unemployment overpayment notices later, make sure DSHS knows about any repayments you have to make.

0 coins

Also, if you qualify for expedited TANF (which you might with kids and no income), that can help bridge the gap while waiting for other programs to start up. The caseworkers are usually pretty understanding about tight situations.

0 coins

I'll definitely ask about expedited processing when I apply. Every day counts right now.

0 coins

Don't forget about other programs too - you might qualify for food assistance (SNAP) and medical coverage while you're at it. Might as well apply for everything you're eligible for.

0 coins

Good thinking. I'll look into the whole package of support programs available.

0 coins

The DSHS office can usually help you apply for multiple programs at once, which saves time.

0 coins

Quick tip - when you go to the DSHS office, bring copies of everything: ID, social security cards for you and kids, proof of address, bank statements, and any unemployment documentation from Washington ESD. Better to have too much than not enough.

0 coins

Thank you! I'll make a checklist so I don't forget anything important.

If you run into issues with Washington ESD during this process, definitely consider using that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Sometimes you need to talk to an actual person to sort out how your TANF application might affect your unemployment claim or vice versa.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to check that out if I can't get through on my own. Thanks for sharing!

Just remember that both programs are there to help you get back on your feet. Don't feel bad about using the support systems - that's what they're for, especially when you have kids depending on you.

0 coins

I really needed to hear that. Sometimes it feels overwhelming but you're right, these programs exist for situations like mine.

0 coins

Absolutely! Take the help when you need it, and when you're back on your feet, you'll be paying taxes that help the next family in need.

One last thing - make sure you keep your contact information updated with both agencies. If they can't reach you for appointments or reviews, it can cause problems with your benefits. And if you move, report the address change to both DSHS and Washington ESD.

0 coins

Great point. I'll make sure both agencies always have my current phone number and address.

0 coins

Hope everything works out for you! It's a lot to navigate but totally doable. Just take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions at both agencies.

0 coins

Thank you everyone for all the helpful information! I feel much more confident about applying for both programs now.

0 coins

Good luck! Remember that the worst they can say is no, but you won't know until you try. And with kids involved, you'll probably qualify for more help than you think.

0 coins

You're right. I'm going to start the applications this week. Thanks again everyone!

Feel free to come back and update us on how it goes. Your experience might help someone else in a similar situation down the road.

0 coins

I will definitely do that! This forum has been so helpful.

Just wanted to add - if you have any issues with Washington ESD that need quick resolution while you're also dealing with TANF, that Claimyr service others mentioned could really help speed things up. Sometimes timing is everything with these benefit programs.

0 coins

That's a really good point about timing. I'll keep that option in mind if I need to resolve anything quickly.

0 coins

Wishing you all the best! It's tough being a single parent trying to navigate all these systems, but you've got this. There are people and programs out there to help.

0 coins

Thank you so much. This community has given me hope and practical advice. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help.

Remember to celebrate the small wins too - getting approved for benefits, finding a good job lead, even just making it through a tough day. You're doing important work taking care of your family.

0 coins

That means a lot to hear. Some days it feels like I'm barely keeping my head above water, but you're right about celebrating progress.

0 coins

Final thought - keep all your documentation organized and in one place. When you're juggling multiple benefit programs, good record-keeping can save you a lot of headaches down the road.

0 coins

Definitely going to set up a filing system this weekend. Organization will make everything easier to manage.
