How to reach someone at Washington ESD unemployment - can't get through

I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for over two weeks now about my unemployment claim and I'm going crazy. Every time I call the main number I either get a busy signal or sit on hold for 3+ hours only to get disconnected. My claim has been stuck in adjudication since mid-December and I really need to talk to an actual person to find out what's going on. The online system doesn't give me any details about why it's taking so long. Has anyone figured out a way to actually get through to someone at unemployment? I'm starting to panic about my bills.

The phone situation with Washington ESD is absolutely terrible right now. I've had the best luck calling right at 8am when they open, but even then it's hit or miss. Try calling 833-572-8400 instead of the main number - sometimes that line is less busy.

Thanks! I'll try that number tomorrow morning. Do you know if there's a specific extension I should press for adjudication issues?

0 coins

Press 1 for English, then 1 again for unemployment benefits, then 3 for claim status questions. Be prepared to wait though.

i've been calling every day for a month and only got through once. the person i talked to couldn't even help me and said they'd have to transfer me to adjudication but then i got disconnected. this system is so broken

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Getting through just to be transferred and lose the call.

This is why I ended up using a callback service. Found this thing called Claimyr that calls Washington ESD for you and holds your place in line. You can watch a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ - it actually worked for me after weeks of frustration.

0 coins

never heard of that before, is it legit? how much does it cost

0 coins

I had the same problem with my adjudication taking forever. The key is persistence but also timing. Don't bother calling after 10am - the hold times get ridiculous. Also make sure you're calling the right number for your specific issue.

0 coins

What do you mean by the right number? I thought there was just one main unemployment line.

0 coins

There are different numbers for different issues. For adjudication specifically, sometimes the customer service line can't help and you need to reach the adjudication unit directly.

0 coins

How do you find the direct adjudication number? I've been looking everywhere for it.

The Washington ESD phone system is a nightmare. I spent literally 40+ hours on hold over two weeks before I finally got help. My advice is to call multiple times per day and just keep trying. Eventually you'll get through.

0 coins

40 hours?! That's insane. I don't have that kind of time to waste on hold.

0 coins

I know it's ridiculous but that's what it took. I was calling while working from home so I could stay on hold while doing other things.

0 coins

This is exactly why that Claimyr thing mentioned above is helpful - they hold for you so you don't have to waste your own time. Check out claimyr.com

Try the online messaging system through your eServices account. Sometimes they respond faster to written inquiries than phone calls, especially for adjudication questions.

0 coins

I tried that but it's been a week with no response. Maybe I should try again?

0 coins

Keep trying both methods. Sometimes the online messages get lost in the system during busy periods.

0 coins

THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!! I've been trying for THREE WEEKS to reach someone about my disqualification and I can't get through. The system is completely broken and they don't care about us at all!

0 coins

I feel your pain. It's like they make it impossible on purpose.

0 coins

I understand the frustration but getting angry won't help. You need to be strategic about when and how you call.

0 coins

Strategic? I've tried every strategy and nothing works. The whole system needs to be overhauled.

0 coins

Has anyone tried calling the WorkSource offices? I heard they might be able to help with some unemployment issues or at least give you better contact info.

0 coins

WorkSource can help with job search requirements but they can't access your claim details or help with adjudication issues. You really need to reach Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

Good to know, thanks for clarifying that.

0 coins

just keep calling the main number over and over. took me like 200 tries but i finally got through last week

0 coins

200 tries?! How do you even keep track of that many calls?

0 coins

i was desperate lol. kept a tally on my phone. most of them were busy signals though so they went fast

0 coins

Update on the Claimyr service I mentioned - they called me back within 2 hours and got me connected to an adjudication specialist who finally explained what was holding up my claim. Turns out there was a simple verification issue that took 5 minutes to resolve. Worth checking out if you're stuck like I was.

0 coins

That sounds too good to be true but I'm getting desperate. How exactly does it work?

0 coins

You basically give them your info and they call Washington ESD for you, wait on hold, then call you back when they get someone on the line. Way better than wasting your whole day on hold.

0 coins

ok that actually sounds pretty useful. might have to try that if i can't get through this week

0 coins

Pro tip: if you do get through to someone, make sure you get their direct number or extension. That way if you get disconnected you might be able to call them back directly instead of starting over.

0 coins

Good advice! I'll definitely ask for that if I ever get through.

0 coins

Most of them won't give out direct numbers anymore because they get overwhelmed with calls. But it's worth asking.

0 coins

Same boat here - been trying to reach someone about my weekly claim certification issue for 2 weeks. The automated system keeps telling me to call but then nobody answers. It's like they don't want to help us.

0 coins

At least you can certify weekly claims online usually. My whole claim is stuck so I can't even do that.

0 coins

Mine keeps getting rejected for some reason and I need to talk to someone to find out why. Super frustrating.

0 coins

Try calling on Tuesday or Wednesday instead of Monday or Friday. Mondays are always crazy busy and Fridays people are trying to get last-minute stuff done before the weekend.

0 coins

That makes sense. I've been calling mostly on Mondays thinking it would be better after the weekend.

0 coins

Tuesday morning around 8:30am has been my best time. Avoid lunch hours too - 11am to 2pm is usually terrible.

0 coins

This thread is making me feel better that I'm not the only one struggling with this. I thought I was doing something wrong but apparently it's just a really bad system right now.

0 coins

Definitely not just you! It's reassuring to know others are dealing with the same thing.

0 coins

I had to drive to a WorkSource office and they let me use their phone to call Washington ESD. Took 2 hours on hold but at least I wasn't using my own phone minutes. The staff there was helpful too.

0 coins

That's actually a really good idea! I didn't know they'd let you do that.

0 coins

Not all locations will do it but it's worth asking. They understand how hard it is to get through.

0 coins

whatever you do dont give up. i was about to lose my apartment because my claim was stuck for 6 weeks but i finally got it resolved. keep trying different approaches

0 coins

6 weeks?! That's terrifying. I'm glad you got it sorted out eventually.

0 coins

yeah it was rough but they backdated everything once it got fixed. just dont stop trying

0 coins

Has anyone tried emailing their state representative? I've heard sometimes they can help expedite things with Washington ESD when you can't get through normal channels.

0 coins

That's actually not a bad idea for cases that have been stuck for a really long time. They have constituent services that sometimes can help with agency issues.

0 coins

Interesting option. I might try that if this drags on much longer.

0 coins

The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch. It's 2025 and we're still dealing with phone systems from the stone age. Other states have much better online systems where you can actually get help without calling.

0 coins

Totally agree but complaining won't help OP get through right now. We have to work with what we've got.

0 coins

Fair point. Just venting my frustration with the whole thing.

0 coins

Try the callback feature if they have one. Sometimes you can request a callback instead of waiting on hold, though I'm not sure if Washington ESD offers that service.

0 coins

Washington ESD doesn't have an official callback service, but that's basically what services like Claimyr provide - they hold for you and call you back when they get someone.

0 coins

Starting to think that might be my best option at this point.

0 coins

Good luck OP! I hope you get through soon. This thread has some good advice - try the early morning calls, different numbers, and maybe that callback service people mentioned. Don't give up!

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I'm going to try the 8am calling strategy tomorrow and look into that Claimyr thing if that doesn't work.

0 coins

Let us know how it goes! Rooting for you to get this resolved quickly.

I've been dealing with a similar situation with my unemployment claim being stuck in adjudication for months. One thing that helped me was calling the Spanish language line (even if you don't speak Spanish) and asking to be transferred to an English-speaking agent - sometimes those lines have shorter wait times. Also, I found that calling right before they close at 4pm on Wednesdays sometimes works because people give up calling by then. The system is definitely broken but persistence is key. Have you tried submitting any additional documentation through the online portal while you wait? Sometimes that can help move things along even if you can't reach anyone by phone.
