How to talk to a real person at Washington ESD unemployment office?
I've been trying for weeks to get through to someone at Washington ESD about my unemployment claim and I'm going crazy. Every time I call the main number I get stuck in this endless phone tree that either hangs up on me or puts me on hold for hours before disconnecting. My claim has been sitting in adjudication for over a month and I really need to speak to an actual human being to find out what's going on. Has anyone figured out a way to actually reach a real person there? I've tried calling at different times, pressing different numbers, everything I can think of but nothing works. Getting desperate here because my bills are piling up and I have no idea when this will get resolved.

•It's so frustrating! How are we supposed to resolve anything if we can't even talk to them?

•I've been tracking my call attempts - made 47 calls last week alone and got through to a human exactly zero times

Try calling right at 8am when they open. I had better luck early in the morning before everyone else starts calling. Also make sure you have your Social Security number and all your claim info ready because they'll ask for it right away.

•I tried that but still got the busy signal. Maybe I need to call at exactly 8:00:00?

•Yeah, literally as soon as the clock hits 8am. Set an alarm and have the number already dialed and ready to hit call.

I actually found something that worked for me - there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. They have this system that handles all the calling and waiting for you. There's even a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me literally hours of frustration.

•sounds too good to be true, what's the catch? how much does it cost?

•I was worried about that too but it's actually pretty straightforward. The value is worth it when you consider how much time you're wasting trying to call yourself.

•I can vouch for this - used Claimyr last month when my adjudication was taking forever. Got connected to an agent within a couple hours instead of spending days calling.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!! They don't want to pay benefits so they make it impossible to reach anyone. It's criminal how they treat unemployed people who are already struggling.

•I feel you on the frustration but getting angry won't solve the problem. We need practical solutions.

•Easy to say when you're not facing eviction because your claim has been pending for 6 weeks

Another trick that sometimes works - if you can get through to the initial menu, try pressing 0 repeatedly during the recording. Sometimes it will transfer you to a person instead of going through all the menu options.

•Just tried this and it said 'invalid option' and hung up on me

Drake
•It doesn't work every time, but I've had it work maybe 1 out of 10 tries. Worth attempting when you're stuck in the menu.

•the 0 trick worked for me once but then I was on hold for 3 hours and got disconnected anyway

For anyone dealing with adjudication issues specifically - when you do get through to someone, make sure you ask them exactly what documentation they need to resolve your case. I wasted two phone calls because I didn't have the right paperwork ready the first time.

Alexander Zeus
•That's good advice. What kind of documents did they ask you for?

•In my case it was employment verification from my last job and proof of my job search activities. But it varies depending on why your claim is in adjudication.

I started keeping a log of every call attempt - time, how long I waited, what happened. After 2 weeks I had documented evidence of how broken their phone system is. Thinking about filing a complaint with the state ombudsman.

•That's actually smart documentation. Might be helpful if you need to appeal anything later.

•Exactly my thinking. Plus it makes me feel like I'm doing something productive instead of just getting frustrated.

tried the lunch break strategy someone mentioned in another thread - calling between 12-1pm when supposedly fewer people are calling. still no luck

•I think that might have worked pre-pandemic but now everyone knows about off-peak times so they're just as busy.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I recommended it to my neighbor who was having the same problem and she got through yesterday. Her adjudication issue got resolved in one phone call after weeks of trying to reach them herself.

•Ok you're convincing me to try it. I'm spending so much time calling that I might as well try something that actually works.

•still seems weird that you need to pay a service to talk to a government agency but I guess if it works...

Have you tried reaching out through their online messaging system? Sometimes you can get responses that way even if you can't get through by phone.

•I sent a message 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything back. I think they're overwhelmed everywhere, not just phones.

•Fair point. The whole system seems understaffed.

The reality is Washington ESD is handling thousands of claims with limited staff. It's not personal even though it feels that way when you're the one who can't get through.

Jordan Walker
•I don't care if it's personal or not, people need their benefits to survive

•Absolutely agree, just saying that understanding the system helps you find better ways to work with it.

Pro tip: if you do get through, be super polite and patient with the agent. They're dealing with frustrated people all day and being kind can make a difference in how much they help you.

•That's good advice. I need to remember they're just doing their job and probably hate the phone system as much as we do.

anyone know if there are certain days of the week that are better for calling? like maybe fridays are less busy?

•From my experience Tuesdays and Wednesdays seem slightly better, but honestly it's pretty much a nightmare every day.

this is why I always tell people to save money for emergencies. you can't rely on government systems to work when you need them

Jordan Walker
•not everyone has the luxury of having emergency savings, especially after losing their job

•That's helpful for future planning but doesn't solve the current problem of needing to reach Washington ESD.

Just want to emphasize again that services like Claimyr can be really helpful for this exact situation. When the regular system isn't working, sometimes you need to try a different approach. The video demo I watched explained exactly how it works and it seemed legitimate.

Alexander Zeus
•I watched that video too and I'm going to give it a shot. At this point I've wasted so much time calling that trying something else makes sense.

Maybe try calling your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help cut through bureaucracy for constituents.

Drake
•That's not a bad idea for really serious cases, though it might take a while to get a response from them too.

•True, but at least it's another avenue to try when everything else fails.

final update on my call tracking project - 73 attempts over 3 weeks, got through to a human 1 time, call lasted 4 minutes before getting transferred and disconnected. the system is completely broken

Alexander Zeus
•That's insane. 73 calls for 4 minutes of actual help. No wonder people are looking for alternatives like that Claimyr service.

•Your documentation could be really valuable for advocacy efforts to improve the system.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I'm going to try the Claimyr option since the regular calling clearly isn't working. Will update if I have any luck with it.

For anyone still struggling with this, remember that persistence does eventually pay off. Whether you use a service or keep trying yourself, don't give up. Your claim will get resolved eventually, even if the process is frustrating.

I've been following this thread and dealing with the same issue. After reading all the suggestions here, I decided to try a combination approach - I called right at 8am sharp while also setting up that Claimyr service as a backup. The early morning call didn't work (busy signal again), but having the service running gave me peace of mind that something was actually working on my behalf. Sometimes you just need to accept that the traditional methods aren't sufficient anymore and adapt to what actually works in the current system.
