How to help unemployment - Washington ESD claim stuck for weeks, need advice
My brother filed for unemployment with Washington ESD about 6 weeks ago and his claim is still pending. He's getting really stressed about bills piling up and I want to help but don't know what to do. He says he can't get through when he calls and the website just shows 'pending adjudication.' Is there anything I can do to help him navigate this process? He's never dealt with unemployment before and seems overwhelmed by all the terminology and requirements.

First thing - make sure he's filing his weekly claims even while it's pending! A lot of people miss this and lose out on back pay. Also check that he completed all the ID verification steps on his SecureAccess Washington account.

•Thank you! I'll check with him about the weekly claims. He mentioned something about uploading documents but wasn't sure if he did it right.

•Yeah the ID verification is super important. They won't process anything until that's done completely.

6 weeks is way too long for adjudication unless there's a specific issue. He needs to call Washington ESD and find out what's holding it up. The phone system is awful but that's the only way to get real answers.

•He's tried calling multiple times but keeps getting hung up on or put on hold for hours. Any tips for getting through?

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. Also clear your whole morning because you might be on hold for 2-3 hours even if you get through.

I was in the same situation last year and found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. Basically they handle the calling for you and connect you to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me literally days of calling.

•That sounds almost too good to be true. Is it legitimate? How much does it cost?

Salim Nasir
•It's totally legit - they don't ask for any personal info about your claim, just help you get connected. The cost varies but honestly after wasting weeks trying to call myself it was worth every penny.

•I used them too when my claim got stuck in some weird adjudication loop. Got through to an agent same day and found out it was just a simple form I needed to submit.

Has he checked if there are any outstanding issues in his eServices account? Sometimes Washington ESD sends messages through the portal that people miss. Also make sure he's keeping up with the job search requirements even while pending.

•I'll have him double-check his messages. What are the job search requirements exactly?

Laila Fury
•He needs to make 3 job contacts per week and log them in WorkSourceWA. If he's not doing this it could delay or disqualify his claim.

•Wait, I thought it was 2 job contacts per week? The requirements keep changing.

•It's 3 per week unless you're in an approved training program or have a standby status with your employer.

Adjudication can take forever especially if there's any question about why he left his job or if there were any issues with his work history. They have to investigate everything before approving benefits.

•He was laid off due to company downsizing, so it should be straightforward. Maybe that's not the issue?

•If it was a clear layoff then yeah, that's weird it's taking so long. Definitely sounds like something else is holding it up.

THE WASHINGTON ESD PHONE SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE!!! I've been trying to get through for 3 months about an overpayment notice. They just hang up on you or the line goes dead. It's like they don't want to help anyone.

•That's exactly what my brother is experiencing. It's so frustrating to watch him stress about this.

•Same here, I've called probably 200 times in the past month. The system is completely broken.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr - couldn't deal with the endless calling anymore. They handle all that frustration for you.

Make sure he has all his documentation ready - tax records, pay stubs, separation notice from his employer. If they do call him back or he gets through, he'll need everything at hand.

Charity Cohan
•Good point. What specific documents should he have ready?
0 coins
Khalil Urso
•Last 2 years of tax returns, recent pay stubs, the layoff notice or separation paperwork, and his social security card. Also any correspondence he's received from Washington ESD.

Is he eligible for any emergency assistance while waiting? Some counties have programs for people whose unemployment is delayed.
0 coins
Charity Cohan
•I hadn't thought of that. Do you know where to look for those programs?

Myles Regis
•Check with his county social services department or local food banks. Many have emergency rent/utility assistance programs.

•211 is a good resource too - just dial 2-1-1 and they can connect you to local assistance programs.

honestly the whole unemployment system is set up to make you give up. they make it as hard as possible hoping people just stop trying. your brother needs to keep pushing and not let them wear him down.

Charity Cohan
•It really does feel that way. He's starting to wonder if it's even worth continuing to pursue.

•don't let him give up! he's entitled to those benefits if he was laid off. make them do their job.

Has he tried reaching out to his state representative or senator's office? Sometimes they can help cut through the bureaucracy for constituent services.
0 coins
Charity Cohan
•That's a great idea! I didn't know they could help with unemployment issues.

Landon Flounder
•Most elected officials have staff dedicated to helping constituents with state agency issues. Worth a shot if nothing else works.

•I tried this route and it took 3 weeks just to get a response. Better than nothing but don't expect quick results.

Check if he qualifies for expedited processing. If he's facing eviction or utility shutoff they sometimes prioritize those cases.

Charity Cohan
•He's getting close to that point with rent. How does he request expedited processing?

Ally Tailer
•He'd need to call and speak to a supervisor, but good luck getting through to anyone. This is another case where a service like Claimyr might help.

I went through this exact thing earlier this year. Turned out Washington ESD had flagged my claim for some reason and nobody told me. Once I finally got through to an agent, they cleared it up in 10 minutes and released 8 weeks of back pay.

Charity Cohan
•That gives me hope! How did you finally get through to talk to someone?

•Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got connected within a few hours instead of calling for weeks myself.

•Same experience here - weeks of calling got me nowhere, Claimyr got me through same day. Found out it was just a missing form.

Make sure he's documenting everything - every time he calls, every message he sends, dates and times. If this goes to an appeal he'll need that record.

Charity Cohan
•Good thinking. I'll help him start keeping a log of all his attempts to contact them.

•Yeah, screenshots of his online account status, notes about phone calls, everything. The more documentation the better.

this is why i hate the government. they take your taxes all your life then when you need help they make you jump through a million hoops. its disgusting.

•It is frustrating watching him go through this. He worked for 15 years and never asked for help before.

•That's exactly how I felt. You pay into the system your whole career and then they act like they're doing you a favor.

Tell him to keep filing those weekly claims no matter what. Even if his claim is still pending, he needs to maintain his eligibility. Missing weekly claims can disqualify you.

Charity Cohan
•I'll make sure he understands this. Thanks for the reminder - seems like this is really important.

•Super important. I've seen people lose months of benefits because they stopped filing weekly claims during adjudication.

•Yep, the weekly claims keep your place in line basically. Don't skip them ever.

Update us when you figure out what's going on! I'm dealing with a similar situation and curious how it turns out.

You're a good sibling for trying to help him through this. The unemployment process is confusing even for people who've done it before.

•Thanks, I just feel helpless watching him stress about money when he should be getting these benefits. Really appreciate everyone's advice here.

•Family support makes a huge difference during unemployment. Keep being there for him.

One more thing - make sure he's registered with WorkSourceWA and doing his job searches. Even if his claim is pending, he needs to meet all the requirements or they could deny him retroactively.

Charity Cohan
•I'll check on this too. So many requirements to keep track of!

•I know it's overwhelming but better to do everything right from the start than have to appeal later.

•The WorkSourceWA registration is mandatory and they check it. Don't skip this step.

Bottom line: your brother needs to talk to an actual Washington ESD representative to find out what's holding up his claim. Everything else is just guessing. The phone system sucks but that's the reality.

Charity Cohan
•You're right. I think we're going to try that Claimyr service to help him get through. Seems like multiple people here had success with it.

•That's probably the most efficient approach at this point. Six weeks is too long to wait without answers.
