What to do if Washington ESD unemployment is taking too long - need advice
I filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD back in mid-January and it's now been over 6 weeks with no payments. My claim status just says 'processing' and I can't get through to anyone when I call. I've been doing my weekly claims but nothing is happening. Bills are piling up and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone dealt with this kind of delay? What should I do if unemployment is taking too long to process?

•Did you try calling the main number? I've been trying for days but always get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•yeah called like 50 times, either busy or they hang up on me. so frustrating

Six weeks is definitely too long for a regular UI claim. There might be an issue with your application that's causing it to go into adjudication. Have you checked your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any alerts or required documents?

•I checked and there's nothing showing that needs my attention. The status just says 'claim under review' with no other details.

•That's frustrating. Sometimes the system doesn't show all the alerts it should. You really need to speak with someone at Washington ESD to find out what's holding it up.

I was in the exact same situation last month - 7 weeks of waiting and getting nowhere with calling. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent. They have some kind of system that calls for you and gets past the busy signals. Cost me a bit but was totally worth it since I got my claim resolved the same day I talked to someone.

•Really? How does that work? I'm desperate at this point and willing to try anything.

•They basically call Washington ESD for you and conference you in when they get an agent on the line. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me weeks of frustration.

•sounds too good to be true tbh, how do you know its legit?

•I was skeptical too but they don't ask for any personal info, just your phone number to call you back when they get through. And it actually worked - talked to a real Washington ESD person within 2 hours.

The Washington ESD phone system is completely broken. I've been trying to get through for 3 weeks about a different issue and it's impossible. They clearly don't have enough staff to handle the call volume.

•It's been like this for years, even before COVID. The system is designed to frustrate people into giving up.

•Exactly! And meanwhile people can't pay rent or buy groceries while waiting for benefits they're entitled to.

While waiting, make sure you're still filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid. If you miss weeks, you could lose those benefits even after your claim is approved. Also document everything - dates you called, reference numbers, etc.

•Yes I've been doing my weekly claims religiously. Should I be doing anything else while I wait?

•Keep applying for jobs and logging your job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they can audit your claim at any time.

try calling right when they open at 8am, sometimes better luck then

•I've tried that multiple times. The lines are jammed even at 8am sharp.

•Same here, called at exactly 8:00 and still got busy signal

This happened to my sister last year. Turned out there was an issue with her employer's response to the separation notice that was holding everything up. She didn't find out until she finally got through to someone after 2 months of calling. The agent was able to resolve it in 10 minutes once she explained the situation.

•That's what I'm worried about - that there's some simple issue that could be fixed quickly if I could just talk to someone.

Camila Castillo
•Exactly. The waiting is the worst part when you know it could probably be resolved with one phone call.

Can you contact your state representative? Sometimes they can help with Washington ESD issues when people can't get through normal channels.

Nathaniel Stewart
•I hadn't thought of that. Do they actually help with individual cases?

•Yes, they have staff that can make inquiries to state agencies on behalf of constituents. Worth a try if you've exhausted other options.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked for me too. Got through to Washington ESD in about 3 hours after weeks of trying on my own. My claim was stuck because they needed additional verification of my employment dates.

•How much did it cost? I'm worried about spending money I don't have while waiting for benefits.

•I understand the concern, but for me it was worth it to get my claim moving. The alternative was potentially waiting months longer without any income.

washington esd is the worst, took them 8 weeks to process mine and that was without any complications

Check if your claim went into adjudication. That's usually what causes the long delays. Adjudication means they're investigating something about your claim - could be job separation issues, availability questions, or eligibility concerns.

•How can I tell if it's in adjudication? My account doesn't specifically say that.
0 coins
Freya Collins
•Sometimes it just shows as 'under review' or 'processing' even when it's in adjudication. The only way to know for sure is to speak with an agent.

I feel for you. I went through this exact same thing and almost lost my apartment waiting for benefits. The stress is unreal when you can't get answers from anyone.

•That's exactly where I am right now. How did you finally get it resolved?

•Eventually got through by calling hundreds of times over several weeks. But I've heard good things about services that call for you since then.

Make sure you're not missing any required documents. Sometimes Washington ESD requests additional paperwork and if you don't see the notification, your claim just sits there indefinitely.

•I've checked my account multiple times and there are no alerts or document requests showing.

•The system isn't always reliable about showing notifications. Definitely worth confirming with an agent that they have everything they need.

try different times of day, sometimes late afternoon has shorter wait times

•I'll try that, though I've been calling at random times throughout the day with no luck.

Six weeks is definitely excessive. At this point I'd try every option available - the calling service, contacting legislators, even reaching out to local news if they have a consumer help segment. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

•You're right, I need to be more aggressive about this. I can't keep waiting indefinitely while bills pile up.

•Exactly. Your benefits are not charity - you earned them and deserve to get them in a reasonable timeframe.

This is why I always tell people to have emergency savings. Can't rely on government systems to work when you need them.

•Easy to say when you're not the one facing this situation. Emergency savings don't last forever.

Just want to say hang in there. I know it's incredibly stressful but you will get through this. Keep trying different approaches and don't give up.

I'm so sorry you're going through this - 6 weeks is absolutely unacceptable for a basic unemployment claim. From what I've seen in this thread and my own experience, Washington ESD's phone system is completely overwhelmed and broken. A few practical suggestions: 1) Document everything - keep a log of every call attempt with dates and times, 2) Try calling the employer services line instead of the claimant line - sometimes you can get transferred to someone who can help, 3) File a complaint with the Washington State Auditor's office about the delays, and 4) Based on the positive feedback here, the Claimyr service seems worth trying if you can afford it. Don't let them wear you down - you've earned these benefits and deserve to receive them in a reasonable timeframe. Keep us posted on what works!

•These are really solid suggestions! I especially like the idea of trying the employer services line - that's clever thinking. I hadn't thought about filing a complaint with the State Auditor either. At this point I'm willing to try anything that might help get some traction on this case. The documentation tip is great too - I've been calling randomly but should definitely start keeping better records. Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive response!

I went through almost the exact same thing last year - filed in February and didn't see a penny until May. What finally worked for me was contacting my state representative's office. I was skeptical at first but their constituent services staff actually reached out to Washington ESD on my behalf and got my case escalated. Turns out my claim had been flagged for some minor discrepancy in my work history that could have been cleared up in 5 minutes if anyone had bothered to look at it. The rep's office got me a direct callback from an ESD supervisor within 3 days, and my benefits started flowing the following week with full back pay. It's worth a shot - your tax dollars pay their salaries, so don't feel bad about asking for help when the system is clearly failing you.

•This is exactly the kind of success story I needed to hear! Three days to get a callback from a supervisor versus months of trying to get through regular channels - that's incredible. I'm definitely going to reach out to my state rep's office first thing Monday morning. Did you have to provide them with specific documentation or case details, or did they just need your basic info to get started? I'm also relieved to hear you got full back pay - that's been one of my biggest worries through all this waiting. Thanks for sharing what actually worked!
