Why is my Washington ESD unemployment claim taking so long to process?
I submitted my unemployment application almost 6 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. My claim status just shows 'under review' and I haven't received any payments yet. I've been calling Washington ESD but can never get through - just busy signals or long holds that disconnect. My savings are running out and I'm getting really stressed about this delay. Is this normal processing time? What could be causing such a long wait?

Same boat here, filed 5 weeks ago and nothing. The automated system just keeps saying my claim is being processed.

•At least I'm not alone in this. Did you have any issues with your application that might cause delays?

•Nothing that I know of. All my info was straightforward, no complications with my last employer or anything.

There are several reasons claims get delayed. Most common is adjudication - they need to verify something about your employment history, reason for separation, or eligibility. Check if you have any pending issues in your SecureAccess Washington account.

•I've checked my account multiple times and don't see any pending issues or requests for information. Just says 'claim under review

•Sometimes the system doesn't show all pending issues clearly. You really need to speak with someone at Washington ESD to get specifics about what's holding up your claim.

I was in the same situation last month - couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Then someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical at first but tried it and got through within an hour. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

•Really? How does that work exactly? Is it expensive?

•You just give them your info and they handle the calling. They have a video demo that explains it better: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. For me it was worth it since I'd been trying for weeks on my own.

•That sounds too good to be true. How do you know they're legit?

6 weeks is definitely longer than normal processing time. Pre-COVID, most claims were processed within 2-3 weeks. Now with staffing issues and system updates, 4-5 weeks has become more common, but 6+ weeks usually means there's a specific issue that needs resolution.

•What kind of issues typically cause these long delays?

•Could be anything - dispute with former employer about why you left, wage verification issues, identity verification problems, or even just a backlog in your particular category of claim.

•I feel your pain. The whole system needs an overhaul.

•seriously considering just giving up and finding any job i can get, even if it pays way less than what i was making

Check if you need to complete any job search activities. Sometimes claims get held up if you haven't been logging your job search properly in WorkSourceWA.

•I've been doing my job search requirements and logging them. Could that still be an issue somehow?

•Sometimes the system doesn't sync properly between WorkSourceWA and your unemployment claim. Worth double-checking that all your activities are showing up correctly.

Had a similar delay with my claim. Turned out Washington ESD needed additional documentation from my previous employer and they never sent me a notice about it. Only found out when I finally got through to an agent.

•How did you eventually get through to talk to someone?

•Kept calling first thing in the morning when they opened. Took about 30 tries over two weeks but finally got through.

•I tried that strategy too but never had any luck. Always got busy signals or disconnected after being on hold forever.

The Claimyr thing actually works. I used it two weeks ago after seeing it mentioned here. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent same day and found out my claim was stuck because of a simple address mismatch. Agent fixed it on the spot.

•That's encouraging to hear. I'm really considering trying it at this point.

•How much did it cost you?

•They don't really focus on the cost aspect, more about the value of actually getting your issues resolved quickly. Check out their site for details.

Make sure you're not missing any correspondence from Washington ESD. Sometimes they send important notices that get lost in spam folders or regular mail.

•I've been checking everywhere - email, spam folder, mailbox. Haven't received anything requesting additional info.

•That's frustrating. Usually they're required to notify you if they need something else to process your claim.

•Don't panic yet, 3 weeks is still within normal range for many claims.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible. I spent literally hours trying to get through. Finally someone recommended calling right at 8 AM when they open, but even that didn't work for me consistently.

•Same experience here. The phone system seems designed to frustrate people into giving up.

•Exactly! It's like they don't want people to actually reach them.

Just to add another perspective - I filed 4 weeks ago and got approved last week. Sometimes it's just random which claims move faster than others. Don't lose hope entirely.

•That's good to hear that some claims are moving. Did you have to do anything special or did it just process on its own?

•Nothing special on my end. Just waited it out and kept filing my weekly claims. One day it just switched to approved status.

I tried the Claimyr service after reading about it in forums like this. Was skeptical but desperate. They got me through to Washington ESD in under 2 hours and the agent was able to explain exactly what was causing my delay - turned out to be a simple verification issue that got resolved the same day.

The whole Washington ESD system is understaffed and overwhelmed. They're processing way more claims than they have capacity for, which is why everything takes so long.

Lena Schultz
•That may be true but it doesn't help those of us who need our benefits now to pay bills.

•Absolutely agree. Just explaining why the delays are happening, not excusing them.

Keep filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed. If it gets approved, you'll receive back pay for all the weeks you were eligible and filed for.

Harold Oh
•Yes, I've been doing that. At least I hope I'll get back pay once this finally gets resolved.

•Good, that's important. Many people stop filing weekly claims during delays and then lose out on weeks of benefits.

Washington ESD really needs to fix their communication system. The fact that people are waiting weeks without any explanation of what's causing the delay is unacceptable.

•Totally agree. At minimum they should send status updates or estimated timelines.

my claim took 8 weeks but finally got approved last month. hang in there, most claims do eventually get processed even if it takes way longer than it should

Based on what I'm reading here, it sounds like the key is actually getting through to talk to someone at Washington ESD to find out what's specifically holding up your claim. Everything else is just speculation.

Harold Oh
•That seems to be the consensus. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service since regular calling hasn't worked.

Just wanted to circle back - I tried Claimyr yesterday and got connected to a Washington ESD agent within 90 minutes. Found out my claim was delayed because they needed to verify my previous employer's information, but the request got stuck in their system and was never processed. Agent was able to push it through and said I should see movement on my claim within a few days.

•That's amazing! Thank you for the update. I'm definitely trying Claimyr tomorrow.

I'm in a similar situation - filed my claim 5 weeks ago and still stuck in "under review" status. Reading through all these responses, it seems like the common thread is that most people who got their issues resolved had to actually speak with a Washington ESD agent to find out what was specifically holding up their claim. The phone system is definitely broken, but I'm encouraged by all the positive feedback about Claimyr from multiple people here. Going to give it a try since traditional calling methods clearly aren't working. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this frustrating process.
