Why is it taking so long for my Washington ESD unemployment to be approved?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 6 weeks ago and it's still showing 'under review' in my account. I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but haven't received any payments yet. The status just says 'adjudication in progress' with no other details. I've tried calling but can never get through to talk to anyone. This is really stressing me out because I need these benefits to pay my rent and bills. Has anyone else experienced such long delays? What could be causing this?

Adjudication delays are unfortunately common right now. Washington ESD has to verify your work history, reason for separation, and eligibility. The process can take 6-8 weeks or longer depending on complexity. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting - you'll get backpay once approved.

•I've been filing weekly but it's been over a month with no communication from them. Should I be worried?

•Keep filing and be patient. If there were issues they would have contacted you by now. The system is just backed up.

Same thing happened to me earlier this year. Took 7 weeks before I got my first payment. The waiting is the worst part but they do eventually process it.

•Did they ever explain what took so long? I'm going crazy not knowing what's happening.

•Never got a clear explanation. Just suddenly approved one day and got a big lump sum payment for all the back weeks.

I was stuck in adjudication for months last year and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD. Finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Within a week of talking to someone, my claim was approved.

•Really? How does that work? I've been trying to call for weeks with no luck.

•They basically handle the calling for you and get you connected to an agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 10 weeks and still nothing. Meanwhile my landlord is threatening eviction. Washington ESD doesn't care about us at all.

•I'm so sorry you're going through that. This is exactly what I'm afraid of happening to me.

•I understand the frustration but screaming won't help. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues in your account that need to be resolved?

Check your correspondence inbox in your Washington ESD account. Sometimes they send requests for additional information that you might have missed. Also verify your identity documents are all uploaded correctly.

•I've checked everything multiple times. No pending issues showing and all my documents were accepted.

•Then it's likely just a standard adjudication review. They're verifying your work history with your previous employer.

mine took forever too but turned out my former employer was disputing it

Emily Jackson
•How did you find that out? Washington ESD never told me if my employer was disputing anything.

I feel your pain. Been there myself. The uncertainty is almost worse than not having the money.

•Exactly! I just want to know what's happening with my claim.

One thing that might help is documenting everything. Keep screenshots of your claim status and any communications. If you do need to appeal later, having that documentation will be important.

Emily Jackson
•Good idea. I'll start taking screenshots now. Hopefully I won't need to appeal though.

•Most claims get approved eventually. Just trying to help you be prepared for any scenario.

Try calling first thing Monday morning at 8am sharp. Sometimes you can get through then before the lines get jammed.

•I've tried that several times. Usually get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Saved me hours of failed calling attempts.

What was your reason for separation? If it was anything other than a clear layoff, they might be investigating further.

Emily Jackson
•I was laid off due to company downsizing. Should be pretty straightforward but apparently not.

Layla Mendes
•That should be an easy approval. Maybe they're just backed up with cases right now.

I remember when I was waiting for my claim to be approved, every day felt like an eternity. Hang in there - it will get resolved.

•Thanks for the encouragement. Some days I wonder if I did something wrong with my application.

Are you sure you're eligible? Did you work enough hours in your base period? Sometimes people apply thinking they qualify but don't meet the requirements.

Emily Jackson
•I worked full time for 2 years before getting laid off. Definitely meet the work requirements.

•Then you should be fine. Just a matter of waiting for them to process everything.

If you're really concerned, you can try contacting your state representative's office. They sometimes have better luck getting through to Washington ESD on behalf of constituents.

•That's a good idea. I'll look up who represents my district if this goes on much longer.

Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what. Even if it feels pointless, you have to maintain your claim to get the back pay.

•Yeah I've been doing that religiously. At least it makes me feel like I'm doing something.

My friend used some service to get through to Washington ESD when she was stuck. I think it was called Claimyr or something like that. She said it was worth it just to finally talk to someone.

The waiting is brutal but try not to stress too much. I know easier said than done when you need the money.

Have you checked if there's a hearing scheduled? Sometimes they need to have a hearing before they can approve your claim.
0 coins
Emily Jackson
•No hearing scheduled that I can see. Just says adjudication in progress.

Alicia Stern
•That's good - hearings usually mean there's a dispute of some kind.

•The system is definitely overwhelmed but most claims do get approved eventually. Both of you should get your back pay once it's processed.

Try to stay positive. I know it's hard when you're waiting for money you need, but the vast majority of legitimate claims get approved. The waiting is just part of the process.

•Thanks for the reminder. I'll try to stay patient and keep filing my weekly claims.

I went through something similar last year - filed in January and didn't get approved until March. The "adjudication in progress" status is frustrating because it gives you no real information about what's happening. In my case, they were just verifying my employment dates and wages with my former employer, which took forever because the company was slow to respond to their requests. The good news is that once it's approved, you'll get all your back payments at once. I ended up getting about $4,000 in one lump sum for all the weeks I'd been waiting. Keep filing those weekly claims and try to hang in there - I know how stressful the waiting can be when you're counting on that money.
