Washington ESD unemployment under review how long - claim stuck for weeks
My unemployment claim has been under review for 5 weeks now and I'm starting to panic. Filed my initial claim back in early December and everything seemed fine at first - got my first two weekly payments without any issues. Then suddenly my claim status changed to 'under review' and payments stopped. When I log into my SecureAccess Washington account, it just shows 'adjudication in progress' with no details about what they're reviewing or how long it might take. I've been filing my weekly claims but nothing is getting paid out. Has anyone else dealt with this? How long does Washington ESD usually take when they put your claim under review?

•At least I'm not alone I guess. Did you try calling them? I've been trying for days but can never get through.

•tried calling like 50 times, either busy signal or they hang up after an hour on hold

When Washington ESD puts a claim under review, it typically means they need to verify something about your employment history, wages, or eligibility. The adjudication process can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on the complexity of the issue and their current workload. Common triggers include: discrepancies in reported wages, employer disputes about the reason for separation, or questions about your availability for work.

•Thanks for the info. Is there any way to find out what specifically they're reviewing? My account doesn't give me any details.

•Unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't always specify what triggered the review in your online account. You'd need to speak with an adjudicator to get specific details about your case.

I was stuck in adjudication hell for 6 weeks last year until I found this service called Claimyr. They actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent within 30 minutes and I was able to find out exactly what was holding up my claim. Turns out my former employer had disputed my claim and I never knew. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically help you get through to Washington ESD agents by phone when you can't reach them yourself. Saved me weeks of stress and uncertainty.

•how much does something like that cost though?

•It's worth it to finally get answers instead of waiting in limbo for months. Much better than losing sleep over unpaid claims.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 7 WEEKS for my review to complete and still nothing. Meanwhile my rent is due and I have no income. Washington ESD is completely useless and they don't care about people struggling to survive.

•I understand your frustration but getting angry won't help your case. The adjudication process exists to ensure only eligible claims are paid, even though it's painfully slow.

•Easy for you to say when it's not your bills piling up! The system is designed to deny as many claims as possible.

mine took exactly 4 weeks and 2 days if that helps. got approved after they verified my employment dates with my last employer

Laura Lopez
•That gives me some hope. Did you get back pay for the weeks you were waiting?

Lucas Schmidt
•yes, they paid me for all the weeks I filed claims during the review period once it was approved

Just to clarify some terminology - when people say 'under review' they usually mean adjudication. This is different from a simple eligibility review. Adjudication happens when there's a specific issue that needs investigation, like a separation dispute or wage discrepancy. Regular eligibility reviews are much faster.

•what's the difference between adjudication and an appeal? I keep seeing both terms thrown around

•Adjudication happens before a decision is made on your claim. An appeal happens after Washington ESD makes a decision that you disagree with. Two completely different processes.

I'm on week 6 of adjudication and my case worker finally called me back yesterday. Turns out my employer reported that I was fired for misconduct but I actually quit due to unsafe working conditions. Now I have to provide documentation to prove my side of the story. This could take even longer...

•At least you finally got some information about what's going on. I still have no clue why mine is under review.

•Document EVERYTHING if you're dealing with a separation dispute. Email records, witness statements, photos if relevant.

Try calling right at 8am when they open. I got through after about 45 minutes on hold last week.

•I've tried that several times but keep getting disconnected or the line goes dead after waiting forever.

Whatever you do, make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while under review. If you miss weeks you won't get paid for those periods even if your claim gets approved later.

•Yeah I've been doing that. It feels pointless since nothing is getting paid but I don't want to mess up my claim.

•Good advice. I know someone who stopped filing during adjudication and lost out on 3 weeks of benefits.

Has anyone had success with contacting their state representative's office? I've heard they can sometimes help push things along with Washington ESD.

•I tried that route and they basically said there's nothing they can do about adjudication timelines.

•That's why I went with Claimyr instead. At least they can get you directly to someone who can actually look at your case and give you real answers.

8 weeks here and counting. This is beyond ridiculous. I've never been more stressed in my life.

The worst part is not knowing what they're even reviewing. At least if they told us what documentation they needed we could provide it faster.

•Exactly! The lack of communication is the most frustrating part of this whole process.

•That's exactly what happened to me until I used Claimyr to actually talk to someone. Found out my employer had submitted conflicting information about my separation date.

Quick update - mine just got approved after 5 weeks and 3 days. Got a lump sum payment for all the back weeks. Keep filing those weekly claims!

•Congrats! That gives me hope. Did they ever tell you what was being reviewed?

•They were verifying my wage history because I had worked for multiple employers in my base period. Nothing dramatic.

For what it's worth, I think the average is around 4-6 weeks based on what I've seen in these forums. Some get resolved faster, some take longer, but most fall in that range.

•That matches what I've observed too. The really long ones (8+ weeks) usually involve complex employer disputes.

Make sure your contact information is up to date in your Washington ESD account. Sometimes they try to reach you and if they can't, it delays the process even more.

•Good point. I should double check that everything is current in my profile.

I'm a former Washington ESD employee and can tell you that adjudication times have gotten much longer since 2020 due to increased claim volume and staffing issues. What used to take 2-3 weeks now often takes 4-6 weeks or more.

•Unfortunately not much you can do except ensure all your information is accurate and respond quickly if they request additional documentation.

Week 7 update: Finally got a letter saying they need additional wage verification from one of my previous employers. Would have been nice to know that weeks ago!

Laura Lopez
•At least now you know what they need. How long do you have to provide it?

•They gave me 10 days to respond, which seems tight considering how long they took to tell me what they needed.

Just wanted to add that even though the wait is stressful, most claims do eventually get approved if you're genuinely eligible. Try to stay patient and keep documenting everything.

For anyone still struggling to get through by phone, I second the recommendation for Claimyr. Used them last month when I was stuck in adjudication and they got me connected to an agent who explained exactly what Washington ESD needed from me. Worth every penny to end the uncertainty.

•About 20 minutes from when I submitted my request to when I was talking to a Washington ESD agent. Way better than the hours I wasted trying to call myself.
