Why is Washington ESD unemployment taking so long in 2024 - claim been pending 6 weeks
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD back in early December and it's now mid-January 2025 - still showing 'pending' status with no updates. I've been filing my weekly claims but haven't received a single payment yet. The automated system just keeps saying my claim is under review. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant due to layoffs, nothing complicated about my situation. Anyone else experiencing these crazy delays with Washington ESD this year? I'm starting to panic about rent and bills piling up.

same boat here, filed in November and still waiting. called like 50 times, either busy signal or they hang up after 2 hours on hold

•Exactly! The phone system is completely broken. How are we supposed to get answers when they won't even take calls?

•The phone volume has been insane since the holidays. Best times I've found are Tuesday/Wednesday mornings right at 8am.

Washington ESD has been overwhelmed with claims lately. Your situation sounds like standard adjudication - they're reviewing your separation reason and work history. Even straightforward layoffs can take 4-8 weeks during busy periods. Keep filing your weekly claims to preserve your benefit weeks.

•4-8 weeks?? That's insane. How are people supposed to survive that long without income?

•I know it's frustrating, but the system has to verify everything. Make sure you're documenting your job search activities - you'll need that when payments start.

I was stuck for 7 weeks last fall until I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually get through to Washington ESD agents. Costs a bit but they got me connected within a day and my claim was processed that same week. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that. Sounds too good to be true tbh. Why would a third party be able to get through when we can't?

•They have automated systems that keep calling until they get through, then connect you to the agent. Worked for me and my neighbor both.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. The stress is killing me.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! Been waiting since October 2024 and STILL NOTHING. They want us to starve while they take their sweet time pushing papers around!!!

•I understand the frustration, but screaming doesn't help. Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? They can sometimes intervene.

•tried everything, nobody cares about the working class anymore

Is your claim definitely in adjudication? Log into your account and check the determination letters section. Sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved but the notifications don't get sent properly.

Javier Mendoza
•I've checked everything - no letters, no pending issues showing. Just says 'claim under review' in the status section.

•That usually means they're waiting on employer response or doing wage verification. Could take another few weeks unfortunately.

dude this happened to my cousin too, washington esd is just slow as hell lately

Javier Mendoza
•How long did your cousin end up waiting?

Chloe Anderson
•like 2 months total but she got backpay for everything

One thing to double-check - make sure your identity verification is complete. Washington ESD implemented stricter ID verification after all the fraud issues. Go to your online account and look for any ID.me requirements that might not be finished.

Javier Mendoza
•Good point, I'll check that. I think I did the ID.me thing when I first applied but maybe something didn't go through.

Malik Davis
•Yes, incomplete ID verification is a huge cause of delays right now. The system won't tell you clearly if there's an issue.

My sister in law got tired of waiting and tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. She said it actually worked - got through to an agent in like 30 minutes and found out her employer had disputed her claim. Agent was able to resolve it right there on the phone.

Javier Mendoza
•That's exactly what I need - just someone to tell me what's actually happening with my claim.

•Still seems sketchy to me. Why can't Washington ESD just fix their own phone system?
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Because they won't. Been broken for years and getting worse. Sometimes you gotta work around the system.

Update: tried calling again this morning at exactly 8am and got through after 90 minutes on hold! Agent said they're averaging 6-8 week processing times right now due to staff shortages and system upgrades.

•What did they say about your specific claim? Were you able to get any timeline?

•She said my claim is in queue for final review, should hear something within 2 weeks. At least now I know it's moving.

•That's progress! Getting any information at all is better than the black hole of not knowing.

Same thing happened to me in 2023 after I got laid off from Boeing. Took 8 weeks total but I eventually got every penny of backpay. The waiting is brutal but hang in there.

•8 weeks... I don't know how I'm going to make it that long. Already behind on everything.

•Look into local food banks and utility assistance programs. Most have emergency help for people waiting on unemployment.

anybody know if the job search requirements are still suspended? heard different things and dont want to mess up my claim

Isabella Santos
•Job search requirements have been fully reinstated as of 2024. You need to log 3 job search activities per week and keep detailed records.

StarStrider
•crap, better start logging everything then. thanks

I'm a tax preparer and I've seen this pattern with multiple clients this season. Washington ESD seems to be taking extra time on any claim where the employer separation reason doesn't match exactly what you reported. Even small discrepancies are triggering manual review.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•That could be it. My employer might have coded it differently than I expected. Is there a way to check what they reported?
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•Only by talking to an agent unfortunately. They can see the employer's response but you can't access it online.

tried the claimyr thing after reading about it here - actually worked! got connected to washington esd agent in about 45 minutes. found out my claim was stuck because they needed me to verify my last day worked. agent fixed it while i was on the phone and said payments should start next week

Javier Mendoza
•Seriously? That's amazing. I'm definitely going to try it. How much did it cost?

Zara Rashid
•rather not say exact amount but it was worth every penny to finally get answers and get my claim moving

•Still don't understand why we should have to pay a third party to access our own benefits

For anyone still waiting - document EVERYTHING. Keep screenshots of your weekly claim confirmations, print out your monetary determination letter, save all correspondence. If there are any issues later you'll need this paperwork.

Javier Mendoza
•Good advice. I've been screenshotting everything but hadn't thought about printing hard copies.

Malik Davis
•Definitely print important documents. The online system sometimes loses older records.

this is why i hate government programs. takes forever to get help but they sure are quick to ask for their taxes back

Isabella Santos
•Unemployment benefits are taxable income, so yes, you'll owe taxes on them. You can have taxes withheld from your payments if you want.

My claim took 9 weeks last year but when it finally went through I got a lump sum of over $4,000 in backpay. The wait was horrible but they do pay you for every week you were eligible, even the ones you waited.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•That's reassuring at least. I just need to know there's light at the end of the tunnel.

•Hang in there. The system is slow but it does eventually work. Make sure you keep filing every week no matter what.

has anyone tried contacting their local WorkSource office? sometimes they can help push things along or at least give you better information than the phone system

Javier Mendoza
•I didn't know they could help with claims. I thought WorkSource was just for job searching.

•they work with washington esd and sometimes have better access to claim information. worth a shot

The delays are definitely getting worse. I work in HR and we're seeing much longer processing times when our laid-off employees ask us about their claims. Washington ESD seems understaffed for the current volume.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•Is there anything employers can do to speed up the process? Like responding faster to requests?
0 coins
CosmicCruiser
•We respond to all separation verifications within 24 hours, but I don't think that's the bottleneck. It's the manual review process that's taking forever.

I finally got through to an agent last week after trying for a month. She said the main delays are happening in the adjudication unit and they're working overtime to catch up. No promises on timeline but she said most claims from December should process by end of January.
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•That's somewhat hopeful. At least there's some kind of timeline now.

Isabella Santos
•End of January would put you right at the 6-8 week range, which matches what I've been seeing lately.

just wanted to follow up - my claim finally got approved yesterday after 7 weeks of waiting! first payment should hit my account this week according to the agent. keep the faith everyone, it does eventually happen

Javier Mendoza
•Congratulations! That gives me hope. Did you end up getting the full backpay amount?
0 coins
Ethan Taylor
•yes, got credit for all 7 weeks i was waiting. definitely helped to keep filing every week even though nothing was happening

•This is exactly why it's crucial to keep filing weekly claims during the wait. Great outcome!
