How long does Washington ESD unemployment take to process - been waiting 6 weeks

Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD back in early November and it's now almost the end of December. My claim status still shows 'under review' and I haven't received a single payment yet. I've been doing my weekly claims religiously and keeping up with my job search requirements through WorkSource, but nothing seems to be moving. Called the customer service line probably 50+ times and either get disconnected or told there's nothing they can update me on. Anyone else dealing with these crazy long processing times? I'm getting really stressed about rent and bills piling up.

Processing times have been all over the place this year. Some people get approved in 2-3 weeks, others are waiting 8+ weeks depending on if there are any flags on their claim. Did you get any correspondence from Washington ESD asking for additional documentation? Sometimes claims get stuck in adjudication if there's an issue with your separation from work or if they need to verify your identity.

No letters or emails asking for anything additional. My employer didn't contest the claim either so I'm not sure what the holdup is.

Check your secure messages in the online portal too, not just regular email. Sometimes they send requests through there and if you miss it your claim just sits.

Ugh I feel your pain! Mine took 7 weeks and I was losing my mind by the end. The worst part is not knowing WHY it's taking so long. Like just tell us what the issue is so we can fix it!

Exactly! The uncertainty is almost worse than the wait itself.

Did yours eventually get approved? What finally moved it forward?

0 coins

Yeah it got approved but they never told me why it took so long. I think it was just backlog.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent? I was stuck in the same situation - couldn't get through on the phone for weeks. Found this service at claimyr.com that basically calls for you and gets you connected to a real person. Watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) and decided to try it. Got connected to an agent within a couple hours and found out my claim was flagged for some random verification issue that I never got notified about. Agent cleared it up right away and my payments started coming through within a week.

Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm desperate at this point so willing to try anything.

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They don't ask for any personal info or passwords, just your phone number so they can connect you when they get an agent on the line.

Sounds too good to be true tbh. How much does it cost?

0 coins

The standard processing time is supposed to be 3-4 weeks for a straightforward claim, but that's assuming everything goes smoothly. If there's any issue that requires adjudication - like questions about why you left your job, availability for work, or identity verification - it can take much longer. Washington ESD is also still dealing with higher than normal volume from the past few years.

I quit my job to take care of my sick parent, could that be causing the delay? I thought family care was a valid reason.

0 coins

That could definitely be it. Family care can qualify you for unemployment but they have to verify the medical situation and that you had no other reasonable alternatives. That type of adjudication often takes 6-8 weeks.

Wait, you can get unemployment if you quit to take care of family? I thought you could only get it if you were laid off or fired without cause.

Check if your claim shows any 'open issues' in the online system. Sometimes there are flags that don't generate automatic notifications but you can see them if you dig around in your account dashboard.

Just checked and there's one issue listed as 'separation information pending review' but no details about what they need from me.

0 coins

That's probably why your claim is stuck then. You need to get someone on the phone to tell you exactly what documentation they need.

honestly the whole system is broken. Been paying into unemployment insurance for 15 years and when I finally need it, it takes 2+ months to get approved?? Meanwhile bills don't stop coming. It's ridiculous.

0 coins

Preach! I had to borrow money from family just to keep my lights on while waiting for my claim.

0 coins

The system definitely needs major improvements but complaining won't help OP get their claim processed faster.

Since you mentioned you quit for family care, you'll likely need medical documentation proving your family member's condition and that you were the primary caregiver with no other options. The adjudication process for 'good cause' quits is more thorough than regular layoffs.

I have all the medical records and can prove I was the only one available to provide care. Should I mail these in or wait for them to request them?

0 coins

Don't mail anything unless they specifically request it. But definitely mention you have the documentation ready when you talk to an agent.

Try calling first thing Monday morning at 8:00 AM sharp. That's when I finally got through after weeks of trying. Had to call the exact second they opened.

I've tried that multiple times but the lines are jammed within seconds of opening.

Same experience here. The phone system is overwhelmed every day.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked. Was skeptical at first but got connected to a Washington ESD agent the same day I signed up. Found out my claim was stuck because they needed to verify my work authorization even though I'm a US citizen. Agent was able to clear it immediately once we talked.

How quickly did they call you back with an agent?

Took about 3 hours on a Tuesday afternoon. Way better than the weeks I spent trying to call myself.

Make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. If you miss weeks, you could lose benefits for those periods even after your claim gets approved.

Yep, been filing every week religiously. At least that's one thing I'm doing right!

six weeks is long but not unheard of unfortunately. my neighbor waited almost 10 weeks last year for a complicated separation issue. the system is just backed up.

10 weeks?! How did they survive financially that long?

food banks, family help, basically whatever they could do. it was rough.

If you have a separation issue on your claim, those typically take 6-8 weeks minimum to resolve. Washington ESD has to contact your former employer, review documentation, and make a determination about whether your quit qualifies for benefits. Family care situations usually do qualify but they have to verify everything thoroughly.

•

That timeline makes sense given what I'm seeing. At least now I have a realistic expectation instead of hoping it'll be resolved tomorrow.

The worst part is they don't communicate these timeframes upfront. Would save everyone a lot of stress and constant phone calls.

Have you considered reaching out to your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help push things along when constituents are having issues with state agencies.

0 coins

CosmicCaptain

•

Didn't know that was an option. Might be worth trying if I don't hear anything in the next week or two.

Document everything - dates you called, times you tried to get through, any correspondence you've received. If your claim gets denied or delayed inappropriately, you'll need that information for an appeal.

Good advice. I've been keeping a basic log but should probably be more detailed about it.

Just wanted to follow up - did you end up trying Claimyr or any other method to get through to Washington ESD? Hoping you got some answers about your claim status.

CosmicCaptain

•

Actually yes! Used Claimyr yesterday and got connected to an agent. You were right - my claim was flagged for additional verification of the family care situation. Agent said it should be resolved within 1-2 weeks now that they know what documentation to review. Thanks for the recommendation!

That's awesome! So glad you finally got some real information about what was holding things up.
