How long does it take to get an answer from Washington ESD unemployment office?
I've been trying to get answers about my unemployment claim for weeks now and I'm getting nowhere. Filed my initial claim about a month ago and it's been in adjudication status ever since. I've called the Washington ESD customer service line probably 50 times and either get a busy signal or sit on hold for hours before getting disconnected. I've also sent messages through my SecureAccess Washington account but haven't heard back from anyone. My claim shows 'pending' but there's no explanation of what they need from me or how long this is supposed to take. I'm starting to panic because my savings are running out and I have no idea when I'll see any benefits. Has anyone else dealt with this? How long should I realistically expect to wait for someone to actually respond to my questions?

unfortunately this is pretty normal right now. took me almost 6 weeks to get through adjudication and another 2 weeks after that to actually talk to someone when i had questions about my job search requirements

•6 weeks?! I don't know if I can wait that long. Did you ever get through on the phone or did they just eventually process your claim?

•eventually got through but it took forever. kept calling first thing in the morning around 8am when they opened

The adjudication process typically takes 3-6 weeks depending on the complexity of your case. If you're in adjudication, it means they're reviewing something about your claim - could be your reason for separation, work history verification, or eligibility requirements. During this time, you should continue filing your weekly claims even though you're not receiving payments yet. Once approved, you'll get back pay for all the weeks you filed. For getting answers by phone, try calling right at 8:00 AM when they open - that's when you have the best chance of getting through.

•I've been filing my weekly claims but I'm worried I'm doing something wrong since I can't talk to anyone. Should I be concerned that it's taking this long?

•Keep filing those weekly claims - that's the most important thing. If there were issues with how you're filing them, Washington ESD would send you a notice or show alerts in your account.

I had a similar situation last year and found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. They basically call for you and wait on hold, then connect you when an agent picks up. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was honestly a lifesaver because I was spending entire days trying to get through on my own.

•Wait, there's actually a service that will wait on hold for you? That sounds too good to be true. How does that even work?

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it's legit. They use some kind of automated system to call and wait, then patch you through when someone answers. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•This is interesting - I've been calling for weeks with no luck. Might have to try this if I can't get through soon.

ADJUDICATION IS JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR THEM TO DELAY PAYING US! I've been waiting 8 weeks and still nothing. They make it impossible to reach anyone and then act like it's our fault when we can't get answers. The whole system is broken and designed to make us give up.

•I'm starting to feel the same way. It's like they don't want to help us at all.

•I understand the frustration, but adjudication is a necessary part of the process to ensure benefits go to eligible claimants. The delays are unfortunately due to high volume and staffing challenges.

Try calling during lunch hours too - sometimes fewer people are calling then. Also make sure you're calling the right number. Main customer service is 833-572-8400 but there are different numbers for different issues.

•Good tip about lunch hours! I've only been trying in the mornings. Do you know what the different numbers are for?

•The main line handles most general questions about claims and benefits. There's also a separate line for employers but that won't help you as a claimant.

same boat here, filed 5 weeks ago and still waiting. at least you're getting to the hold music - half the time i just get busy signals

Sophia Miller
•The busy signals are the worst! At least when you're on hold you feel like you're making progress.

•exactly! sometimes i wonder if the hold music is just fake and no one's actually there lol

If you're having trouble getting through by phone, you can also try reaching out to your local WorkSource office. They have staff who can help with basic unemployment questions and sometimes can escalate issues to Washington ESD on your behalf. You can find your local office at worksourcewa.com.

•I didn't know WorkSource could help with unemployment questions! That's really useful information.

•Yeah WorkSource helped me figure out my job search requirements when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD. They're usually less busy than the main unemployment line.

I've been tracking my call attempts and the best times I've found are: 8:00-8:15 AM (right when they open), 12:00-12:30 PM (lunch period), and surprisingly around 4:30 PM. Avoid Mondays entirely - everyone calls on Monday.

Sophia Miller
•This is super helpful! I'll try the 4:30 PM time slot - I never would have thought to call that late.

•Why is Monday so bad? I've been trying Mondays thinking it would be better after the weekend.

•Everyone thinks the same thing about Mondays being fresh, plus people who had issues over the weekend all call first thing Monday morning. It's the worst day to try.

Another thing to check - make sure your mailing address is correct in your account. Sometimes Washington ESD sends important notices by mail and if they can't reach you, it can delay your claim. Also check your spam folder for emails from ESD.

•Good point about the spam folder! I should double-check that. My address is correct as far as I know.

Just want to say I feel your pain. Been trying to get answers about my overpayment notice for 3 weeks now. It's incredibly frustrating when you need help and can't reach anyone.

Sophia Miller
•An overpayment notice sounds even scarier than what I'm dealing with. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Zoe Gonzalez
•Thanks, yeah it's stressful. At least with your adjudication you know they're reviewing your claim. With overpayment I'm worried they'll want money back.

I actually just got through yesterday using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 45 minutes for them to connect me but it worked. The agent was able to explain exactly what was holding up my claim and what I needed to do next. Definitely worth it if you're desperate like I was.

Sophia Miller
•45 minutes is way better than the hours I've been spending! What did you find out about your claim?

•Turns out they needed verification of my previous job's end date. Something that would have taken 2 minutes to explain but I couldn't get through to find out. So frustrating but at least now I know what to do.

•This is exactly what I need - just want to know what's holding things up. Going to try Claimyr today.

Don't forget you can also contact your state representative or senator's office if you're really stuck. They have staff who can help with state agency issues and sometimes can get faster responses than calling directly.

Sophia Miller
•I never thought about contacting my representative! That's a good backup plan if nothing else works.

Quick tip - if you do get through to someone at Washington ESD, ask for a reference number for your call and write down the agent's name or ID number. That way if you need to call back, you can reference the previous conversation.

•Smart advice! I'll definitely do that if I ever get through to someone.

been there, it sucks. just keep trying and filing your weekly claims. the system is overwhelmed but eventually they'll get to your case

•Thanks for the encouragement. Some days I wonder if I should just give up and find any job I can.

•don't give up! you're entitled to those benefits if you qualify. it's just taking longer than it should

Make sure you're documenting everything - when you called, how long you waited, any reference numbers, etc. If you end up needing to escalate or appeal anything later, having that documentation will be helpful.

•That's really good advice. I haven't been keeping track but I'll start now.

The wait times are definitely frustrating but hang in there. Once your claim gets approved, you'll receive all the back pay for the weeks you've been waiting. Make sure to keep filing those weekly claims even while you're in adjudication status.

Sophia Miller
•I'm definitely going to keep filing weekly claims. It's reassuring to know I'll get back pay if approved.

Noah Torres
•Yes, the back pay is important! I got mine in a lump sum once my claim was finally approved. Just make sure you don't miss any weekly claim deadlines.

One more thing - if you're really struggling financially while waiting, look into local food banks and assistance programs. Many communities have resources to help people waiting for unemployment benefits. No shame in getting help when you need it.

Sophia Miller
•Thank you for mentioning that. I've been too proud to look into assistance programs but my savings really are running low.

•That's what these programs are for - to help people through tough times. You've paid into the system, there's no shame in getting help when you need it.
