How to fix active issues on Washington ESD unemployment claim - stuck for weeks
My unemployment claim has been showing 'active issues' for almost a month now and I have no idea what to do. When I log into my Washington ESD account, it just says there are issues that need to be resolved but doesn't tell me what they are or how to fix them. I've been filing my weekly claims but not getting any payments. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm getting really stressed about my bills piling up and can't seem to get any answers from the system.

Active issues usually mean there's something Washington ESD needs to verify about your claim. Common ones are employment separation issues, availability questions, or missing documentation. Did you quit your last job or get fired? Sometimes they need to verify the reason for separation.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing. I provided all the paperwork when I filed but maybe they need something else?

•Yeah, they might need verification from your employer. The issue could be that your employer hasn't responded to their request for information about your separation.

Active issues usually mean there's something in your claim that needs manual review by an adjudicator. Common causes include separation issues (like if you quit or were fired), work search requirements not being met, or identity verification problems. Check your correspondence inbox in your Washington ESD account to see if there are any documents you need to submit.

•I checked my correspondence and there's nothing there. It's so frustrating that the system doesn't tell you what the actual issue is.

•Yeah the Washington ESD website is terrible at explaining what's wrong. I had the same problem last year.

You need to call Washington ESD directly to find out what the specific issues are. The automated system won't give you details, but a human agent can look at your claim and tell you exactly what needs to be resolved. The phone number is 800-318-6022 but expect long wait times.

•I've been trying to call for weeks but either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. It's impossible to get through.

•The phone system is definitely overloaded. I usually try calling right when they open at 8 AM or during lunch time around 12-1 PM when call volume might be lower.

I was in the exact same situation 2 months ago - active issues for 6 weeks with no explanation. After countless failed attempts to reach Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. They have a system that handles the calling and waiting for you. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Within 2 days of using it, I finally talked to someone who explained my issues and helped me resolve them.

•That sounds almost too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

•It was worth every penny to finally get answers after weeks of stress. Way better than wasting entire days trying to call and getting nowhere.

Active issues can also be triggered if you had any earnings during a week but didn't report them correctly, or if there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported to Washington ESD. Double-check all your weekly claim filings to make sure everything is accurate.

Anthony Young
•I've been super careful about reporting everything correctly. I even kept records of all my job search activities in case that was the issue.

•Good that you're keeping job search records. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby status.

Ugh this is so frustrating! I had the same thing happen and it took forever to figure out what was wrong. Turns out I had an 'able and available' issue because I mentioned I was taking care of my sick mom in one of my weekly claims.

I was dealing with the same runaround trying to reach Washington ESD about my active issues. After weeks of busy signals and disconnected calls, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have this video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. It was honestly a lifesaver - got connected to someone who could actually see my file and explain what was going on.

•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than spending hours on hold yourself.

ugh this is exactly what happened to me except mine said 'pending adjudication' instead of active issues. basically the same thing though - no payments for over a month while they 'reviewed' my claim. the whole system is broken.

Charlotte White
•Pending adjudication and active issues are slightly different. Adjudication means they're actively reviewing your eligibility, while active issues means there's something specific that needs to be addressed first.

•whatever the difference is, the result is the same - no money and no way to find out what's wrong

Active issues can be several things: 1) Separation issue - they need to verify why you left your job 2) Availability issue - something in your weekly claims suggests you might not be available for work 3) Identity verification - they need additional documents 4) Wage verification - discrepancy between what you reported and employer records 5) Job search requirements - you might not be meeting the search requirements properly

•Wait, you have to use WorkSource for job searches? I've just been applying places on my own.

•You need to log your job search activities in WorkSource WA. Three qualifying activities per week minimum, and they need to be documented properly in the system.

Have you tried using the online chat feature? Sometimes that's easier than calling, though the wait times can still be long.

•I didn't know there was an online chat option. Where do I find that on the Washington ESD website?
0 coins
Rachel Clark
•It's usually in the 'Contact Us' section, but I think it's only available during certain hours and often gets overwhelmed too.

•The chat feature has limited functionality. For complex issues like this, you really need to speak to an actual claims specialist on the phone.

My cousin had active issues that turned out to be because she moved to a different address and didn't update her information with Washington ESD. Something that simple can trigger a review of your entire claim.

Just want to second what someone said about Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but after 3 weeks of trying to reach Washington ESD myself, I gave it a try. Got connected to an agent the next day and found out my issue was a simple employer separation form that needed to be processed. Agent took care of it right away and my payments started flowing within a week.

Active issues can also happen if there's a question about your ability to work or availability for work. Like if you indicated you weren't available certain days or had restrictions on the type of work you could do.

Anthony Young
•I've been marking that I'm able and available for work every week. I don't have any restrictions.

I actually just resolved my active issues last week using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 2 days to get connected to an agent, and they were able to see that my issue was related to my employer not responding to their request for separation information. The agent initiated a follow-up with my employer and my claim was cleared within a few days after that.

The fact that you can still file weekly claims is actually a good sign. It means your claim isn't completely suspended, just held up while they resolve whatever the issue is. Keep filing those weekly claims even if you're not getting paid - you'll get backpay once it's resolved.
0 coins
Anthony Young
•That's reassuring at least. I was worried I was wasting my time filing the weekly claims.

Try calling the main Washington ESD number early in the morning or late in the afternoon. I've had better luck getting through around 4:30 PM when a lot of people have given up for the day.

Pro tip: if you do get through to someone, ask them to send you a written explanation of the active issues to your secure messages. That way you have documentation of what needs to be fixed.

Just went through this exact situation. My active issue was because I mentioned in a weekly claim that I had a doctor's appointment. They flagged it as an availability issue thinking I wasn't available for work that day. Took 4 weeks to get it cleared up once I explained it was just a routine appointment.
0 coins
Amara Okonkwo
•That's insane that a doctor's appointment would cause an issue.

Check if you received any mail from Washington ESD that you might have missed. Sometimes they send physical mail about issues that need attention, and if you don't respond within a certain timeframe, it can hold up your claim.

Anthony Young
•I've checked my mail thoroughly and haven't received anything from Washington ESD since my initial claim was filed.

Check if your employer filed a response to Washington ESD's request for information. Sometimes employers don't respond or respond with incorrect information, which creates issues on your claim.

Sometimes active issues are related to ID verification. Did you recently move or change your address? That can trigger verification requirements.

I had a similar situation and it turned out to be because my employer hadn't responded to their request for information about my separation. Washington ESD was waiting for that before they could process my claim. There was nothing I could do except wait for my employer to respond.

One more vote for trying that Claimyr service. I was hesitant about using a third-party service for something this important, but after watching their demo video and seeing how it works, I felt more comfortable. I'm going through something very similar right now - active issues for about 3 weeks with no clear explanation from the system. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful, especially learning about the different types of issues that can cause this. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously but it's so frustrating not knowing what's actually wrong. I'm definitely going to try calling at different times of day and look into some of the solutions people have mentioned here. It's reassuring to know that these issues do eventually get resolved, even though the wait is really stressful when you're depending on that income.
