ESD payment delayed for Columbus Day holiday - checks coming Tuesday 10/15 not Monday

Heads up everyone! Just checked my ESD account and noticed our unemployment payments will be delayed because of the Columbus Day holiday (Oct 14). We'll get our checks on Tuesday the 15th instead of Monday. The system is showing the payment date change already. Just wanted to let everyone know so nobody panics when money doesn't show up Monday morning!

No problem! Yeah I almost had a heart attack myself until I remembered it's a bank holiday. ESD actually updates their system pretty fast with this stuff.

This happens with every federal holiday. Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day is a federal banking holiday, so direct deposits don't process. This applies to all government benefits including unemployment, TANF, etc. Worth marking your calendar for future holidays to avoid the stress!

Does this mean we need to wait to file our weekly claim too or just that the payment is delayed?? Im confused

You should still file your weekly claim according to your regular schedule. The holiday only affects when banks process payments, not when ESD processes claims. So file as normal, just expect payment a day later than usual.

Typical government BS. They make us jump through a million hoops to get our money but then can take an extra day whenever they want because "holiday". Meanwhile my landlord doesn't care if my payment is late because of some holiday. Bills don't take holidays!!!

I feel u... my rent was due on the 1st and I'm already paying late fees. One more day is another $25 for me. hate this system

It's actually the federal banking system, not ESD specifically. Banks don't process ACH transfers (direct deposits) on federal holidays. ESD is still processing claims, but the money can't move through the banking system until Tuesday. If you need more immediate help or have questions about your claim, Claimyr.com can connect you with an ESD agent quickly. They have a good video about how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

This happens every holiday and people still act surprised lol. Pro tip: always check the federal holiday calendar at the beginning of the year and mark your calendar for payment delays. Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, etc. all cause one-day delays in payment processing.

Easy to say when you're not counting every penny! Some of us don't have the luxury of just waiting around for our money to show up whenever the government feels like sending it.

I'm not saying it doesn't suck - just that it's predictable. I'm on unemployment too, but getting upset about a known banking system limitation doesn't help anyone. Better to plan ahead when possible.

File your weekly claim on your normal day (Sunday or Monday, depending on your schedule). The delay is only for the payment processing. ESD still processes claims on holidays, but banks don't process payments, so your deposit will arrive Tuesday instead of Monday.

I had this same problem last month with Labor Day! Totally panicked until I realized it was because of the holiday. Weird how ESD doesn't send a notification about this...

Does anyone know if this affects the loaded4u cards too or just direct deposit?

The Loaded4U debit cards are affected as well since they still rely on the banking system to process the transfers. All payment methods will be delayed by one day due to Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day being a federal banking holiday.

my cousin works at esd and said they're totally swamped right now with people calling about this exact issue... they get like thousands of calls every holiday about delayed payments. wish they'd just put a big notice on the website

They SHOULD put notices everywhere! I bet half their call volume is just people freaking out about where their money is. Such a waste of everyone's time.

If you need to get through to ESD, I've had success using Claimyr.com - they have a system that helps you bypass the phone queue. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Saved me hours of redial frustration when I had an adjudication issue last month.
